I think you missed the edit for hand-made.
I assume that sub-category change applies to the hand-built category as well. My light idea fits the new and previous sub-categories, so it doesn’t matter to me.

Welcome the night.

I’m in for a very large headache of the machine variety. Thanks for the extension to the build time. I get my plastic friend off on the 24th so cant really start till then, maybe.

“No pre-made heat sink” I’ve built lights using heatsinks from computers radios etc in the past, they are pre-made. Are they banned? Thanks.

I am in for the handmade category. It’s not clearly across the line of portability but close enough I’ll let the judges assess it for disqualification instead of giving it away.

Let there be parts… Wink

Hand made would be cutting up a stick of aluminum or making one out of plumbing parts. If you have to cut/form the heat sink to fit, I think it qualifies, but if it's a slip in fit, no work/no worries, I think it's pre-made. Is that clear as mud?

OK – I’ve been stumped with a decent enough idea until this afternoon.

I was sitting on the couch eating hot chilli/cheese, watching some pre-recorded Top Gear, & drinking beer (…so you know it’s got to be a quality idea…)

I spotted something s) sitting on the living room table that would work…

I’m now in for a hand-made, single emitter build Smile

Is it plastic?
Whoops I meant to say bump. I’m still waiting for someone to give me an idea on what to build. I looked on my lounge room table and saw empty beer cans. Do I have to recycle these in a furnace to build a light?

No, but you can fit quite the reflector in the end of a beer can…. Wink

Thanks for moving the end date! Smile
I probably will not have time bevore July 12th, so I would like to enter with a really quick&dirty build in the hand made category, just for the fun of it. Smile (Building stuff with things found in the bits and bobs box is always fun, won’t buy any parts for it. ^^)

Wow talk about a challenge… Unlike you mainland based guys, there is no time (or $$)for me to bring in parts so I have to use what I have and what the hardware provides… Flat Stare Smile

For people who are curious about flashlights I’ve slapped together from random parts, check out my Ugly babies thread Silly

Eebowler, I’m thinking that consideration will be given to location problems. I’ll be using only parts already on hand for this one but half the fun is figuring out how to Mcguyver something together out of odd bits and sparse tools.

How about a beer can with 5 × 18650 and 5 x XML or 4 cells 2s2p with an mtg2? Just imagine what you could fit in a Foster’s can. Beer flood.

I’d love to know how Fosters became ‘the beer of Australia’ in every country other than Australia…. It’s swill – I’m warning you!!!

I’m not sure where you thought this up from. I’m afraid to tell you that you have already lost it and from the above comment delusional as well.

I put up a list of contestants (so far).

If I did not include you, or put you in the wrong category, PM me and I will change it.

Assuming I can come up with something reasonable Smile , I’ll give the handmade category a go.

Do we have to be certain on the category before we start?
I will opt for hand made, which I have been put into.. But working with a dremel, knowing I have a bench-grinder,drill press and various other stuff at my side. I may end up using those tools instead for certain tasks depending on how the build turns out and if I get too fed up with the Dremel, for the sake of using the dremel.
So there is a possibility that I will disqualify for the “hand made” category and end up in the “machine made” category despite doing a 98,5% “hand-made” light…
I assume that is OK as long as Im honest about it?
It would be nice to be able to do the decisions while doing the build, depending on how things turns out. I have no idea how I will do certain things on the light yet.
And if I get the feeling that I am using a stone in order to knock a nail into wood, I may end up picking up the hammer that is easily available…
