My first Mod - New 612

After reading this Review: New 612 - A great budget P60 SIZED alternative for 10$ (+ mod and beam shots) about how the new 612 was good for modding, I got two from Fasttech, and was surprised at how good they were. They have a decent hot spot that illuminates as far as the Convoy M1, with less spill.

The Low, Strobe, High next mode memory was annoying, so:

  • Dissamble,
  • replace plastic lens with a glass one,
  • remove driver and star,
  • clean off moist white heat sink stuff and redo with Fujik still using the original XP-G R5 star,
  • replace driver with 5 x 7135 Nanjg 105C bridged for low - medium - high (tight press fit in Aluminium pill),
  • test before re-assembly and it worked, then rebuilt.

and I now have a nice, lightweight dog walking flashlight with 3 modes and memory. I'm on 5 acres and there are no streetlights around so a good flashlight is appreciated.

Tailcap readings are now Low=.1 Medium=.5 High=1.7 amps (Cheap DMM with new silicon leads, and I think it's amp readings are fairly good).

Unprotected LG 2600mAh battery at 4.2 volts.

Original Tailcap readings

Low=.2 Strobe=?? High=1.9 amps.

I can't see any difference in light output for the .2 amp difference.

Waiting now for an XP-G2 R5 on Aluminium star and another 5x7135 Nanjg 105C to mod the second one.

It sounds like you have made yourself a real nice light. Its hard to see the difference between such a low amp difference. It still amazes me the lack off difference between say 3amp and 2 amp on the same light. After you have finished your next light whats next? May I suggest that you will have to start ordering parts from switches to led’s for future mods.

That sounds like a very nice mod, on what I think it is one of the best looking lights around :-)

Congratulations with your first mod!

I found a Skyray P60 host for $8.95 with what is supposed to be a T6 and 5 modes.

see: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Skyray-1000Lum-CREE-XM-L-T6-LED-Flashlight-Torch-Light-Lamp-18650-/400466777859?ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:AU:3160

When it arrives I'll see how bright it is and if it seems to be a XM-L T6 I'll try changing the driver - maybe an 8x7135 driver with 3 modes and hope thats not too much for a P60.

Congrats on the successful mod. That sounds like a nice light. Eventually, I intend to buy a couple.
