Hi everyone,
First of all my apologies to everyone who has been suffering with the terrible performance of BLF since our webhost made a nasty change for the worst yesterday. I know the site has been almost unusable.
I have been feverishly researching other hosting options and I'm testdriving a new potential host. You can try it out here:
DISCLAIMER:
Not everything works right at the moment. Specifically, commenting and posting don't work, and I disabled a few other features. It's also using an old copy of the database. This is obviously just a quick test, and if we end up switching full 100% functionality will be restored. No data has been lost. Just at the moment I don't want to take the time to configure and migrate everything without getting an idea of performance first.
So please hammer on the test site and see how it responds. Thanks to everyone for their help and patience!

That site mentioned is quite a bit faster than this site at the moment..
thanks SB for all your hard work
The Eneloop 2005-2022 info thread
Way faster than the current site is (taking a good 10-15 seconds for a page to load on here for me), but I'm not sure whether that is due to the low traffic on that host or the different server.

it is a lot faster, but it will be hard to tell until it gets the full load that this site gets. at least i would imagine

The test server seems very fast and responsive to me.
+1 Same here. Seems faster than the "usual" BLF, but could be due to less load.

Sb, I know this is going to sound weird, but I have some pretty great speeds (40+ mbps up) here at my house, if you want I could essentially DOS it just to give it a bit more of a load.
I have a nice 8 core AMD desktop with wired connection sitting ready.

i think i may have crashed it  sorrrry
i tried to log in. it went slow, then loaded, then i went back to the homepage and it went to the site offline page

Site off-line. Let’s blame it on Pulsar. Just because.
The site is currently not available due to technical problems. Please try again later. Thank you for your understanding.
I just managed to crash mySQL (actually MariaDB), but that was searching for the word “the”.

I figure if he get’s us panicked over the near total loss of our beloved BLF, then restores it…he’ll be planning on a whole new series of lights showing up at his doorstep!
Just kidding of course, thanks for all the hard work your’e doing on this sb. It’s appreciated in a very big way!
is "the" like chuck norris? you dont find -the-, -the- finds you

faster than the old one (before the problems) i think…
My internet connection is always quite slow, so I appreciate your collective observations about the speed (or lack thereof) on your end.

Just rebooted the server.

Mostly very fast. Every once in a while it lags just a bit, but still very fast.

how many times do i have to mark someone as spam to get their account blocked? 0:)

Ok, now, please be merciless. Open as many pages as you can at once. There’s a Chrome extension called “linkclump” that lets you shift+select to open multiple links at once. Try it on the recent posts list.
Thanks!

Ummm. Getting the main page, the ones with the threads listed, was fast, but if I click on one of the threads, it’s not so fast. For example, this one:
http://198.199.90.139/?q=node/21874
took ~14 seconds for the thread to appear.

P.S. SB, can you enable the search function… to see how that works speed-wise?
i just opened about 100 blf threads at once... i dont think my computer liked it very much
-the- Throw calculator - Pulsars list
I suspect it will be a bit slow on some pages still because the cache isn’t warm yet.
I’ve been trying the search function, but something isn’t working because of my quick provisional hack.
I just discovered that private messages do work on this testbed. So blast away.
That will help to simulate real load.

i had already discovered that
is me just about crashing my pc opening 100x pages doing anything to help the research?
-the- Throw calculator - Pulsars list
SB, I now have ~100 threads open and auto-refreshing every 3-5 seconds.

Thanks for your martyrdom!
The server and the DB seem to have survived it. Did most of those pages load for you?
Budget Light Forum ...where Frugal meets with Flashlight!
all of them did, most of my screen went white, and then my computer stalled, but they all loaded in about 30 seconds or so.
right now i got a rather long gibberish string i am copy and pasting in a PM over and over and over
-the- Throw calculator - Pulsars list
Nice! Thanks! Are most of the pages loading for you?
Nice machine you have there if it’s holding up.
Budget Light Forum ...where Frugal meets with Flashlight!
So why did you reduce the number of threads that you usually have open?
I thought the idea was so stress test it…
Here’s another expensive DB query you can try if you’re logged in:

Budget Light Forum ...where Frugal meets with Flashlight!
how do you auto refresh that many threads? i think it was opening 100 new windows in 10 seconds or so that was freezing mine, if i can get them all open in one window then i should be able to go at it too
-the- Throw calculator - Pulsars list
Yep, everything is holding up so far, I would say maybe half of them finish loading, I'm gonna slow down the refresh rate to make sure I give the server a chance to serve up the whole site.
@Pulsar, it's a chrome add on called Easy Auto Refresh.
Also, now just for fun I'm taking something like 30 megabytes worth of text (random chinese characters since unicode takes up a ton of space) and pasting it into the username and password area.
