Do you guys like partially serrated knives?

Eh?

depends... generally, yes i do. if you practice some discipline, you can do your heavy tasks with the serrated edge, and save the straight edge from unneeded abuse

nah not reary a fan

Me neither. I have one that has a partially serrated blade, but don’t care for it. All my other ones have plain edges, which I find more useful, in general.

Plus, I think the serrations make the blade look “ugly”.

JMO…

Only when cutting bread and turkey. It has it's uses. Sometimes a flat edge just doesn't CUT it.

I carry one now with the partial serration and it does cut through rope quickly. Its a Gerber 06 Fast Tanto Combo 3.8”. It doesn’t really matter to me if we are talking pocket knives. The grip is more important to me and I like a “safety” switch so it can’t open in your pocket. I get what feels good in hand.

I don’t like serrations at all, unless it’s one of those rare occasions when I need to cut something thick. I got cut pretty bad by one, so I can’t help thinking they’re dangerous, whereas a straight edge would’ve just sliced the skin, the serrated blade I cut myself with went almost straight to the bone with the slightest effort. lol The only serrated blades I ever use are on my multi-tools. I don’t buy knives with serrated edges, although I do own a couple, I never use them though.

I don’t like them on the same blade. I carry a leatherman wave, and a Spyderco Endura 4. The Leatherman wave has a completely serrated blade, which I use on rougher tasks. The Leathermans serrated blade works much better when cutting through cardboard than my plains. And it retains it’s edge much longer than if I were to try and use the Endura on cardboard.

I’m not too keen on them myself as an EDC. In general use, there’s not much call for them. The people I know who like them generally never have, or don’t know how to sharpen a knife. Since the plain edge was dulled long ago they rely on the serrated part and saw through everything.
For outdoors activities, such as camping. A larger folder or fixed blade with partial serrations could come in very handy for sawing through tough things like small branches. In the bush you never know what you might have to cut through to make repairs or jury rig something. It could be a leather belt or PVC pipe.

I live on a rural property so I usually am cutting things like irrigation hose, rope etc. A serrated blade would probably be more useful at times but I dont know how to sharpen them! A sharp straight edge is more useful to me than a blunt serrated edge. My current EDC takes a replacable trimming knife blade, easiest way to keep it sharp…

Not really, plain edge is my choice if I get to choose.

I like partly serrated knifes it’s always “sharp” that’s why I like it.

In case anyone's curious, to sharpen a serrated blade, first re-establish the flat side on a stone if needed. Then employ the use of files to sharpen each scallop. Time consuming, yes. Fun? No.

No

Not at all ... they just feel nasty.

As a bread knife they are great,

on a edc ..no way!

If the blade is flat on one side they don't cut straight ...they always push the blade off to one direction. depends on how they are serated ..I started noticing this on kitchen knives because I seemed to be carving like a blind guy.

I think they have their utility (rope etc.) but I don’t need this sort of cutting ability. Aside from my EMT shears, the only serrated tools I have are retired kitchen knives.

For utility purposes, I guess they have their uses. The Spyderco Rescue has a nice serrated blade that would be good for cutting straps etc.

On the other hand, on my hip is a Charge TTI with a plain edge and serrated blade. In my pocket is my Resilience. I think I’m covered.

Though I haven’t sharpened my serrated blade yet (I’ve never used it) I think it would be better to sharpen the serrations and then do a completely flat smooth on the back of the blade, much like a chisel grind.

Yep. Prefer them to be about 1/3 of the blade, unless the blade is short. Lost my favorite, a small curved blade with 1/2 serration and a wicked point.

I sometimes edc a gerber fast draw with the partially serrated blade. I have no complaints. Bit aggro for in the city carry, so it usually sees action when fishing/camping etc. I prefer a smooth blade when I don’t need the heavier use knife.

I don’t like it but i have 2 partially serrated folders and a partially serrated karambit
I prefer flat blades, much better and useful for me.
