I'm really happy with my new Gerber Evo knife I just got from priceangels.com for $8.77. Gerber lists it at $38 MSRP. So I thought I'd recommend this find to others here. It's really well made. I like the low profile clip - it carries deep inside a pocket. The liner lock secures the blade solidly. A bit stiff opening at first, but a little working in WD40 cured that. Now it opens fast, one handed with the thumb stud. I think though that I'll secure the axis screw with glue to prevent it loosening further. Thanks sb56637 for recommending priceangels!
The Gerber EVO knife was designed to be straight and continuous across the spine and over the handle, thus giving it a dagger-like appearance. This Gerber 22-01432 model features a partially serrated 440A stainless steel blade that is coated in titanium nitride. The handle is light weight aluminum that has seven holes cut out for good looks and to lighten the knife even further. The blade is held in place and released with a liner lock in the handle. A pocket clip is included for easy carrying.
I think you have to assume that buying $8 Gerbers and Bucks, and $12 Benchmades from China is sort of like buying $100 Rolex watches from there. Yeah, they do look a lot alike, but...
BTW Buck knives used make their knives right here in San Diego, but because of California taxes and regulative environment, they moved to Idaho. Now they've farmed most of the mass-produced stuff to China.
Respectfully, I disagree Trooplewis. Why would you have to assume that? Just because it's a killer of a deal price?
As you've said "Now they've farmed most of the mass-produced stuff to China." We know Gerber makes knives in China. If it's made in China, and you buy it from China, then it might be what you think it is.
Maybe they're clearing them out because Gerber didn't like the 10,000 units that had been loaded in boxes that had a typo on them, or had silkscreen logos that were in the wrong shade of ink. Who knows ?
If the knife looks like a Gerber Evo, functions like a Gerber Evo, then why isn't it a Gerber Evo? Just because it's sold at a massive discount doesn't mean you have to assume it is not the knife you think it is. Here's a challenge, prove to us that it isn't!
Bottom line, it's a damn nice knife for the price.
Well, I have to agree with trooplewis here. No major western brand would allow their Chinese manufacturers to sell them this much under their price. There is a reason why SRM, Enlan, Navy and Ganzo sell under their brand name and not under Buck,Spyderco,CRKT, because if they did... this would be their last contract with the western brand. I don't own your particular knife, but I have a DX-Gerber, which is clearly a fake and has inferior materials. It's not a bad knife, but people should be warned that they don't get the real deal. But if you like the knife... it's all good. Remember that beginners may read your first impression of a knife and think they get the original, which is very unlikely.
What troop and Vectrex said. And at the web page they really don't claim the knife to be a Gerber, but "Stainless Steel Sharp Blade Manual Release Pocket Knife with Sawtooth(20.5cm Full Length)". That is alone enough for me to be convinced it's not a real deal. No matter what logo is printed on the blade.
If it would be Gerber, they would claim it to be Gerber. (and often also when it's not)
Erm, Buck moved the majority of their production back to the US because they couldn't compete with Kershaw and Spyderco's overseas stuff. The only stuff left in Buck's lineup still made in China is the SanRenMu stuff (the nobleman and that line) and their multitools. Frankly, Gerber knives are generally pretty crappy - even if it is a Chinese knockoff, the steel couldn't be much worse than the 440a that Gerber uses anyways.
Whether or not this is a genuine Gerber, the price is certainly right for a the item. There are good and bad reviews on YouTube for just about ever mainstream knife made, and there are several on this particular model as well (genuine or not). IMO, every Gerber I have ever owned (or heard of from friends) doesn't hold an edge very well, and that includes their expensive top models.
Thanks again for the heads-up dimeotane. For the price, I cant see how anyone could go wrong. Like most Chinese knifes, 440 certainly isnt the best for holding an edge but does a descent job... and its very easily sharpened with a diamond hone kit.
But if it is from China and has the letters "DUKC" written on the side, the feathers are made of nylon and needs feeding with a 18650 battery, then it is probably the new improved DUKCTM from Ultrafire. ;-)
Don't get me wrong... I like a well made clone... I actually like the fake Solarfarce L2 and UF-504B better than the original. I just wish they left away the brand name, which makes them a counterfeit.
Basically the same knife has been sold by CRKT for several years now. I thought better of Gerber but guess they have been reduced to copying others designs at this point. Pretty obvious rip-off when you compare the pics.
wiljen, there is only very few knives that DON'T look similar to a model of a different maker, ihmo that's just the way human culture/technology works.
