Anyone with a IQ-328 (or similar charger/analyzer) a video camera and a freezer want to do an experiment?

As a continuation from a PM between Bort and I resulting from this thread I have an experiment I’d like to see performed but I don’t had a video camera to monitor it.

I’m (we’re) curious what’ll happen recharging batteries on a battery charger & analyzer at sub-zero temperatures. If someone could conduct the experiment using a video camera to monitor and then edit (or time-laps) the video that would be much appreciated. I have the IQ-328 and the freezer but not a way to monitor it and being as central Ohio doesn’t get cold in the winter anymore I can’t just wait a few moths and do it outside either.

*Disclaimer: this should be a very safe experiment being as its so cold but I can’t be responsible.

It’s a NiMh charger, not Li-Ion

Nickel-metal-hydride is less forgiving than the nickel-cadmium if charged under high and
low temperatures. Nickel-metal-hydride cannot be fast charged below 10↤ C (45↤ F), neither
can it be slow charged below 0↤ C (32↤ F). Some industrial chargers are designed to adjust the
charge rate to existing temperatures. Price sensitivity does not permit elaborate temperature
sensing on consumer chargers.
At higher temperatures, the charge acceptance of nickel-based batteries is drastically reduced.
A battery that provides a capacity of 100% when charged at moderate room temperature can
only accept 70% if charged at 45↤ C (113↤ F), and 45% if charged at 60↤ C (140↤ F). This
demonstrates the poor summer performance of some vehicular chargers.

I appreciate the lesson in theory but I’m more interested in finding out what actually happens, not just the why or how. I don’t want to seem like a jerk or come across as unappreciative and honestly thats a much more in-depth answer that I ever imagined but it really doesn’t tell me what happens when you put a charger in the freezer.

What does the charger actually do? Not “some industrial chargers” I’m talking about a specific charger (the IQ-328 or one of the other consumer grade analyzer/chargers we on this site use).

Again please don’t thing I’m not thankful for your in-depth explination but it doesn’t at all satisfy my curiosity.

No, you don’t come across as a “JERK” at all. The Theory you speak of is generally regarded as fact though, at least by the Universities that took the time to do the tests to provide such Knowledge. I know for one, I would just Love to stick my Video Camera in My Freezer just to satisfy your Curiosity. Especially with your Disclaimer and Charming Manor an all.
But here’s a thought, before asking other people to risk damage to their own Equipment to sate your Curiosity. Perhaps you can contact one of those Universities that have done the Tests already, and see if they took any Footage of the Test being performed and ask if you can view it. Then you can sit down for as long as you like and watch it (it may even be Time Lapsed for you), and then no need for a Disclaimer. Then your Curiosity will be cured. Alternatively, buy a cheap Video Yourself, or go halves with Bort and stun everyone with your findings. Cheers & Good Luck.
