Decided To Send My L3 Illumination K40 To Vinhnguyen54

Well it’s not another light like I said I wouldn’t, but after having Vinh do my TN31 I just had to have him dedome my K40 and drive it to 6.5amps. I’m gonna guess it will be around 450K after he gets done with it. Thought I would let you guys know. I’ll be sending it out to him very soon.

Here’s the details on what Vinh does.

- XML2 6500K Dedome 1800 LED Lumen (Factory 3-3.5A will be raised to 6.5A) (tint will look like 5000K after dedome)

- Thick direct copper bonding

- Premium Thermal Comound

- Larger LED Wires

- All current conection touch up

- Battery carrier tweak

- Tune for most intense hot spot focus

- These lights will be shipped to me at the beginning of August. Orders will be fulfilled immediately as I receive them.

- Expect very intense hot spot and generou swide spill.

- I like this light more than the TN31 because you get a larger hot spot and wider spill that light up a larger area while losing just a bit throw (neligible throw IMO). Most importantly I like the K40 more than the Tn31 because the size is more compact! Two of my customers who had the chance to handle my fully modded K40 and TN31 side by side pick the K40 over the TN31. These two customer were the only people that got to handle the lights side by side.

- The first 3 mode in the UI will be very close to factory. The next three mode will be brighter than factory.

- Runs very hot on the 6th mode or Max brightness. On extended run turn the light down a few clicks

  • You can run the light as long as it gets too hot to hold.

I’m excited just to get the stock one. 6.5 amps…day-um!

6.5 amps should be a sight to behold. Post some beamshots when you get her back please!

I will. Did you see the before and after pictures of the TN31 he did for me? It’s unreal the difference.

He is doing a whole run of 22 k40’s over and cpfm. I have the tn31 from him and its incredible. I might get one of these too!

Example of Vinhnguyen54 great work A stock TN31 at 110yds mouseover and a Vinhnguyen54 modded 6.5 amp dedomed XM-L2 copper heatsink TN31 mouseout. This will say it all.

I’m gonna say my TN31 modded sample is easily 500K. It will give my Power On Board 35watt hid all it wants.

I’m going to send him my K40 and thinking about having him do the TK75 also…

Seriously? 500kcd from an XML2 TN31?
I know it’s mind boggling, but it’s not 500kcd. It’s not that easy reaching 500kcd.

Here’s the modded TN31 shot I really like to show it’s true throw capability 300yds to the furthest tree up the street. And this was only a manual 1.2 sec shutter just like the others above. ISO was 400 and focal was 3.2.

Those guys that are interested in buying one of these from Vinh can go here. He’s selling them like hotcakes. He’s just a great guy who knows what he is doing to get all you can out of these type flahlight mods.

Rick,

You will not believe the difference.

I highly recommend his work to anyone here. He’s making lights years ahead of what’s out there now on the market.

These lights are said to even out throw saablaster’s TN31MB that are rated at a little over 400K.

Vinh said he got 480K out of my other TN31 I sold him. I have no doubt this one is right at that or better.

So you’re telling me that a tn31 driven at 6.5A has 500kcd while my tn31 driven at 5.6A only has 360kcd? 900mA especially beyond the 6A mark giving an additional 140kcd?
Both dedome and using the same Led…
Okay… If you say so…

Believe what you wish. I’m telling you what Vinh said. You can take your negatism somewhere else for all I care. I have no doubt this TN31 is 480K at least.

I'm looking into this now. Today I measured about 7 amps between the carrier and driver for 2 resistors, and getting about 390 kcd measured. So, I'm not getting much more. I know my kcd #'s are low, so maybe it's really 410-420 kcd, still 60 kcd (12.5%) behind. I copper braided the + spring and saw no gain at all. So only thing I can conclude is the LED-star and positioning. vinh says he's doing something about it, just no clue what exactly. I left everything pretty much stock - same star, same emitter, but re-seated the star with AS5 and lapped the surfaces, went with 20 gauge LED wires.

So if it's only 12.5% addition he's getting, in theory you could make that up in simply re-positioning the LED - I've seen those kind of improvements before, but really doubted it for the TN31, but who knows - maybe the factory/design was that messed up?? Thinking if you raise the LED, lower the profile of the plastic alignment piece, you may get a nice bump, so could be what he's doing.

He mods a ton of lights I'm assuming for profit, so he's either too busy or too protective to explain details of this mod, dunno... he's a pretty good guy and probably just too busy, but he doesn't really participate on BLF, so maybe he'd post details on CPF eventually. Now if I could take a look at Brad's mod'ed TN31 or any other vinh 480 kcd TN31 or his super K40's, it would probably be pretty obvious. He only fairly recently did these high end TN31 mods, before, he was not doing any resistor mod at all, just de-doming, wires, and a SinkPAD he claimed...

Edit: Just posted a detailed question to vinh on his help line forum on CPF. May take a while but see if I get an answer.

Ohh, also, 480 kcd is what was measured by someone on this level TN31 mod, but of course there could be a wide variance from unit to unit, so 500 kcd is in the realm of possibility for what you are seeing.

geez, that picture is insane! ive seen plenty of modded tn31’s but this one takes the cake.

i am highly interested in the k40 now. i like the fact that its smaller, but more importantly ….you said more spill and slightly less throw.

ill give some away some throw for some spill.

hey brad, about how much for floodier/spill would you say? you dont happen to have a beamshots of your k40 along with your tn31 do you?

that will help me decide.

Beamshots are in here of both.

This TN31 that Vinh did for me makes the BTU Shocker seem like a toy.

I’m telling you it’s very close on a wall to my POB 35watt HID that saablaster said his POB did like 540K. Now I know this TN31 won’t out throw the POB due to the like almost 6” reflector diameter. But it’s the most throw power I have ever seen in a flashlight this size.
