Help me pick. i4?

I’ve been checking out the Intellicharger i4 v2… So in that price range are there any better options I should know about?
Also can the Intellicharger charge NiMH and Li-ion at the same time?

just buy 2 different charger.
1 for Li Ion
1 for NiMH
I4 doesn’t really good to charge NiMH battery :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, the i4 can handle NiMH and LiIon at the same time.

There is a couple of new chargers arriving now with the same abilities (XTAR XP4 and ThruNite MCC-4), I expect to do review of both models. I have also reviewed i4 and copies of it.

One thing I like about the i4 is that I only have to bring one charger to charge batteries in my truck when I’m camping. It doesn’t come with the 12 volt plug (though it says it does in Illumination Supply’s Amazon store description) but I found that I had one already, and it makes the i4 much more useful.

after my i4 experience, I would never ever consider one again, I got an xtar wp2 ii for li ion cells and for now I’m using a duracell charger or two for what nimh charging I do do, works much better for me.

I have several chargers

An Intellicharger i4, Miller Ml-102, Hobby Carger (Accucell 6), and several TP4056 modules 2 with magnets, 2 with single 18650 cell holders and one still unused.

My opinion is that the I4 is a very good charger, but the best charger, if you are willing to fiddle around with DIY battery holders and tweaking dv/dt termination settings etc is a hobby charger.

I use the i4 for both LiIon from 14500 upwards and also with AA NiMH batteries and it charges both chemistries well, with any mixture of size or chemistry. Yes the NiMH get quite warm when charging but they do that on the hobby charger too, with LiIon there is no detectable temperature rise, measured with my uncalibrated finger tip.

I find the fastest charging is with the Hobby Charger, 4 x 18650's in parallel at 4 amps works well and NiMH in 2 cell series with temperature sensor (set to 45) as a backup to the dv/dt charge termination works well also.

Every charger I have charges to slightly different terminal voltages, with both LiIon and NIMH but thats normal, and all are within .05 volts of each other.

Recently there were posts about bad experience with i4. Think it’s about i4 overcharging 18650. Was it you? Could you give the links to the posts?

+1

That wouldn’t be a bit of bias creeping into your post, would it now ?

iirc, you’re in the midst of designing a similar product with DD, right ?
How’s that going ?

I think the i4 is a great charger for the money. I wouldn’t use it to charge anything smaller than an 18650, though. It has too much current for smaller cells like 16340 and 14500 IMO.

Use paired bays for smaller cells. 1&3 or 2&4. But I think if one paired cell finishes charging the other cell will revert to full current, and that could be a bad thing.

When do we start to get speculative sneak peak pics ?

Can we ban him for 7 days for teasing ? >)

The i4 is an “ok” charger. I have one. I would use it for NiMH if I did not have a maya sitting under it. But when I had to buy a charger for a friend after I gave him a UV flashlight that ran on 18650’s, I bought him an i2.

The i4 has too many oddities that bug me. I hate having to remember that slots 1 & 3 are on the same circuit and must be the same size, composition and state of charge. I got rid of all my “must be in pair” chargers because of that. Some may like being able to charge at half rate by filling 1 & 3. This can be important with small cells. But frankly, if I had that problem I would get a hobby charger.

So, I guess if I could only have one charger and I needed the absolute maximum flexibility with known restrictions in a cheap, all in one charger, the i4 would be an “ok” choice.

oh, and yes it can do both nimh and liion at the same time as long as you remember … 1 & 3 must be the same size, composition and state of charge, 2 & 4 must be the same size, composition and state of charge. A pair of 18650’s in 1 & 3 along with a pair of AA Mimh in 2 & 4 does work according to test reports on this forum.

V1 of the i4 had some problems with mixing LiIon and NiMH, but it was replace with V2 more than a year ago and V2 can easily handle a mix of LiIon and NiMH.

When I got tired of dealing with all of the quirks of my Intellicharger i4 v2, I just said F it, went full retard, and bought this:

10x the price? Yes. But it sure is nice being able to charge 4 batteries simultaneously at the perfect current

Hmmmm… He seemed to think quite well of it when he reviewed it here. I wonder why he changed his mind.

I'm not crazy about the i4 either.

Nice. I like how it has a built in power supply.

dang

i got busted.

how could you.

büäähh

:D

The i4 is the only charger I have, so I use it for all types of batteries. So far, not a single problem, the charger does not get warm, neither the batteries, so for the moment I will continue with that. And for the price it is a great charger.
