Everything moonlight modes. Thoughts? Comparisons. Which of your lights have the best?

Ok, so now I have a total of 3 lights which have “moonlight” modes. I have the Flexcandles Asgard. Which offers way more flexibility and usability than the two others. Then there’s the spark SG5. It is the second lowest of the three. It’s actually called minimum, but compared to the Sunwayman D40a, it’s pretty low. The Sunwayman calls this mode moonlight. It’s definitely the brightest of the three by a bit.

Anyway, what do you prefer? Brighter “moonlight” modes, dimmer ones? What do you consider moonlight? For me, here’s how I judge a good mode… If I can wake up in a dark room, and switch on a light, and it not hurt my eyes, then it works. The D40A is quite a bit too much for me, and the SG5 borders on the edge of enough/too much. The Asgard actually has several moonlight modes. One is non-PWM, but the others use such a high frequency I can’t detect it. The only problem is the Asgard is the bulkiest of the three lights.

To me it seems Zebralight offers the most flexibility, but I have yet to acquire one. So right now, my biggest light also has the lowest modes. It seems to get a decent moonlight you have to spend more than $60 on a light? I’m sure there’s other options, but I don’t have them.

So what’s the most budget friendly light you own that has a nice low output mode?

moonlight is enough to stumble to the bathroom in the middle of the night in a pitch-dark house without tripping over anything or hurting your eyes as soon as you turn it on.

My XTAR HD1 on low has a pretty nice moonlight/low mode…it’s just bright enough I could read a map or something up close.

Which one is that? Do you mean the h1 or the D01? Or is there an older model I’m not seeing?

i have a number of lights with moonlight/firefly modes, many of them are modded with drivers that have moonlight.

- Olight S20 Baton ) (Stock)

- Nitecore P25 Smilodon (Stock)

- Ultrafire PD32 ( modded)

- Roche F12 (modded)

  • Sipik SK68 (modded)

Also several lanterns with the moonlight mode.

You don’t have links to these drivers do you?

I’d love to make my sk68 more versatile.

-- I guess my favorite moonlight mode light would be the L3 Illuminations L10.

-- I also still have the original Ti Firefly.

-- The control ring lights usually have a good moonlight. The V11R has a good moonlight and the SRT3 even goes lower than that.

-- The Thrunite T10 (now called Saber) is great, too. It even has mode memory.

-- Haven't played much with the D40A but I don't remember the moonlight being unreasonably high.

Mostly around the house or camp site I am likely to have the V11R or L10 with me.

I used the 7880 Driver, ( 20-mode grouped 1.5 volt, 17mm driver) for the Sipik, Found here: >> http://dx.com/p/3w-5w-20-mode-regulated-circuit-board-for-flashlights-7880
The sipik’s pill has only 15mm stock driver in it though, but the 17mm driver fits resting on the base fo the pill, held in place by the inner body ridge.)

for the Roche, i used the Nanjiq 105C (Qlite Rev.A) 7135, 8 Multiple-Modes Circuit Board (3.04A) , using the 4th Star Mode-Group: (5mA - 2% - 25% - 100%)

Ok one more dumb question.

Do the convoy lines use this driver? I have Convoys including the s6 from Fasttech, do I have a driver already cable of moonlight, that I’m not using?

The convoy lines do use basically the same driver (nanjg 105c), just flashed with a different program. You can reflash your 105c with nLite which basically gives you the same modes as the qlite driver. An easier solution, however, would be to buy a qlite for ~$4 from intl-outdoors.

To flash it you need a specialized adapter right? And software? So yeah, it’s not worth it to me to get into that, if I can just buy 3 drivers for $12 and just throw a new one in. Unless the software and adapters are super cheap and can run on a Mac.

Right, you need around $20 to get started. If you are satisfied with what Qlite gives you, then it is a good way to go.
Qlite

+1. Never modded anything ever but the sk68 is screaming to get modded with a moonlight mode

Any pics of the mod? How high is the ‘high’ output from the new driver? Better than stock? Waht about its regulation?

Lots of good stuff thanks RMM and DenBarrett for the info.

So I guess the only way to know if your Nanjig has moonlight is to try all four stars right? You just basically run a trace to the ground ring on the edge right?

I guess that’s the only way to know for sure, but unless it is a Qlite wouldn’t count on there being moonlight. There may be some other commercially available 105C drivers that have it but I wouldn’t bet on it.

You are correct, you just bridge the stars to ground. The first star is a dummy and doesn’t connect to anything so you’re looking at stars 2-3-4.

Cool thanks. I have no idea what are in 2 I have. I got the s5 and s8 from that crazy limited ali express promo. The other Nanjig I have is from Fasttech.

My lights with "moonlight mode" are as follows;

  • Crelants (7G3CS[sold],7G5CS, 7G6CS) (xmlu3)
  • C20 Crelant 7G3CS clone. (Ultrafire I think?) (xmlu2)
  • ZL SC52 (xmlu3) (Sold)
  • ZL SC52w (xml2t6)
  • ZL H502 (xmlu2)
  • ZL S6330 (xmlu3)
  • ZL SC600II (Sold) (xmlu3)
  • ZL H602W (xml2u2)
  • Armytek Predator (xpg)
  • Armytek Wizard ProWide (xml2u2)
  • Nitecore SRT5vn (xml2t6)
  • Nitecore SRT3 (xml2u2)
  • K40vn (xml2u2)
  • TN31vn (xml2t6)
  • X40vn (xml2u2)
  • Xtar H1 (??? don't remember.)
  • Valeno D2

Probably some others I'm forgetting. Moonlight mode to be is by far lowest on the Valeno D2. I can get it so low that it's really more of a barely visible glow, and it's not really possible to notice except in complete darkness. The Zebralight H502 xmlu2 is the next runner up in the super low department.

The Crelants, C20, Wizard Pro, SRT5, and all of Vinh modded lights, the moonlight mode is a bit too bright imho. I mean it's very low, but not to the same degree of just being a glow.

The most actually useful moonlight mode, is the lowest setting of the S6330. It's enough for me to see by, and navigate if I wake up at night easily.

If I had to pick one light, for the purpose of having a moonlight mode, it would be an SC52.

My moonlight mode flashlights are:

Xeno e03 with Qlite Rev.A 5mA driver

XinTD X3 with Qlite Rev.A 5mA driver

L3 Illumination L10 w/Nichia 219

oLight S10

Sunwayman D40A

Armytek Wizard Pro

Zebralight H52w is on order

The first three have a very nice moonlight level, but the X3 is too throwy for it to be very useful. The latter three are too bright and allegedly have 0.5 lumen moonlight modes.

The L10 has the lowest moonlight, and also has the best spacing between moonlight and low. I don't use it much because it's a twisty.

I use the modified Xeno e03 the most.

UPDATED to add:

Zebralight H600mkII

Jetbeam RRT01

None of those drivers have moonlight without being reprogrammed.

Yep, just tried it. Linking the stars to the ground does nothing. I’m actually buying a qlite from Intl outdoor as we speak, so I can try it.
