2.5 billion dollar battery fire ...

Li-ion getting a bad rep or a deserved rep ?

Dunno about Li-ions. But I’ve always been dubious about Tesla. Something about that company and its cars always felt kind of shaky to me.

All those panasonics!

The horror!

No one was hurt

113 million miles clocked on Tesla cars and this is the first fire. 1/10th the rate of conventional cars. And, the car warned the driver to pull over and get out in plenty of time to get out and away safely. AND it vented to the front of the car as planned.

I'm sure there's plenty of good cells left. Send it to me and I'll find out.

In other news, the energy storage device in most automobiles is extremely flammable...

This still isn't really news... Even from the linked article:

"Given that Tesla's Model S and the discontinued Roadster have been driven a combined 113 million miles and that this was the first battery fire, the company's rate of catching fire was still only one-tenth the frequency of conventional car fires."

Also from the article.. although the car burned, it was slow and safe in comparison to gasoline fires/explosions. The driver had time to pull over, stop, and exit the vehicle.. Honestly, sounds pretty boring to me..

I haven't found any definite answers, but from all the pictures I've looked at, I don't believe the fire even penetrated the passenger cabin. That's pretty amazing, really. When a conventional car catches fire, the passenger cabin is almost always destroyed. An injured driver/passenger looks like they might have stood a chance inside of the car even as it burned.

Everything can make perfect sense and work as intended, but sadly still does not matter. Bad PR is bad PR to public.

As the stock analyst guy said, the bar is set much high for Tesla.

Tesla car is kind of something I want to look forward for, hope they can work through this.

Its all about perception, electric car catches fire because of its batteries is a wet dream come true for people against alternative energy

If its a design flaw then they should be able to fix it (they seem willing to unlike other car companies), if its not then they will have to engineer a solution or live with the fact they are above zero risk (but far less then gas powered cars).

I have read a few that said it did not enter the cabin. I think the one in the OP said it somewhere. If I had the cash, I would buy a Tesla.

I got an experiment. Fill the gas tank on a car, poke a hole in the fuel tank, then light the puddle of fuel that forms on fire. I bet it is much more violent than this fire was

I remember when natural gas was used in cars ...

Every time one caught fire , it was on the news or front page of the paper !

One simply has to ask why ? , and who wants to publicize negative news about alternative fuels ?

I’m not saying other cars are any safer, just that Teslas are over hyped.

But honestly, how many fuel tanks rupture due to front end damage?

If it bleeds (burning lithium electrolyte) it leads.

You know exactly what type of people want to publicize bad news about things that are good for the generations after us but bad for big rigid corporations right now.

The model S got a 5 Star Crash Rating in every category, is 90% less likely to catch on fire, and in the one case that it did catch on fire, the passenger cabin didn't burn. Over hyped?
But honestly, how many fuel tanks rupture due to front end damage?
Not many, but plenty of them do from rear end damage. A good number of fires on combustion engine cars are caused by damage to the fuel line, which runs from front to back.

People are always scared about new things and the stock market is crazy. That are just two things we all know so I see here no real problem.

It’s like the Prius with the stuckend gaspedal….big story but in the end it was nothing…

And even if it was a manufacturing fault or even a fault in a whole series of cars, it wouldn’t bother me much. “Normal” cars have failures all the time and there are several models which need to go back to the factory to repair again…

So the Model S car has over 7000, 18650 cells. Im guessing half of them or more is still good in that car.
I need to find the scrap yard that car is going to be stored at so i can go there with some tools ! J)

Thanks for agreeing with me.

Hey, I got dibs!

You're welcome? I'm not sure what a fuel tank rupturing has to do with a fire or overall safety, but if that point makes you feel happy, then I'm happy for you!

If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, why are you replying to my post?
