new computer build

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1Oldw

so its been a while since i built my own pc… 8 years to be exact

just to give you an idea of how long that is from a PC building enthusiasts perspective - my “box of parts/cables” which i have had stashed in the attic is full of mostly useless junk now, thanks to technology becoming obsolete.

the build is a mid range gaming pc - i splurged on a nice 27” led monitor for $200 though

should be able to put it together next week

I think you should get a solid state drive, believe me its worth it

+1

i can always upgrade in the future - i actually had one ordered for my laptop back in the winter but cancelled the order after reading some reviews on it

i went with the samsung 840 pro, mlc memory, decent speed, acceptable price

Definitely throw in an SSD big enough for the OS at least, but if you wanted to splurge again grab a 256gb and install your games and applications and say goodbye to loading times.

i will probably put one in my laptop at some point

the desktop i put together can be upgraded to an 8 core machine in the future, and more ram (up to 32gb) can be added

its very interesting to me some of the stuff thats become available for a good price since i stopped building pcs 8 years ago

in 2005 i bought the best video card money could buy at the time - the bfg nvidia gtx 7800… factory overclocked and would run at 110ºC under load, but had a life time warranty… paid over $300 if i remember correctly

now you can get a 1 gb card for under $100 with multi GPUS lol.

i’ve found that once you build upgrading doesn’t happen, your better off getting a whole new computer when the time comes (i’m also a 6-8 year computer user)
perhaps you should use that card on your new computer as a secondary display, see if you can ever use that lifetime warranty

maybe around christmas time i will see if i can get a good deal on a 256gb ssd for programs and OS

i might expariment with some mild overclocking in the future too - which is why i bought a cpu cooler, although the mobo is somewhat budget - so i dont want to push it too hard

im actually a little nervous about putting this thing together haha… havent seen the inside of a pc in quite some time

my wife will be working next weekend from 8-8 both days, so i should have enough time to get her together

last time i put a pc together i had to run to circuit city (now out of business) at 9 pm to get a floppy drive (!!) to load my “third party” raid driver haha.

my 2005 build died in 2007 actually … :frowning:

i never got a new power supply because i just got married and didnt have $

its still in the attic

amd athlon 4800+
bfg nvidia 7800gtx
asus a8n sli mobo
dont remember the ram

Everything looks fine except for your ram, get 2 x 4GB sticks instead for dual channel operation. Your memory bandwidth will be horrible with a single stick of ram. A single stick of SDRAM back in the P3/Athlon days might have been okay but not now.

maybe ill just order a second 8gb stick

That can work as well, even better

i just grabbed another 8gb stick

in my family members name of course… so i can get the $20 rebate (limit one per household)

I guess it only really matters if you use your PC for gaming, but I'm intentionally holding off on a new PC build until more details regarding Steam machines is released. May be a waste of time, but as a Linux lover but also a gamer, SteamOS holds a lot of appeal for me.

Why the 92mm case fan? Nothing in your build takes 92mm as far as I can see.

Toshiba 1TB is a bit better than the Blue and $10 less at Micro Center.

Good luck on the build. I would also use at least a 120GB SSD and W8 64. The boot time is amazing.

for longevity WD in my experience does better

add 120gb mlc ssd and win 8 64 bit with classic shell, totally worth it, boot time about 5 seconds

My current computer freezes about 3-5 times a day depending on usage. It takes literally 5 minutes to hardboot and turn back on. I’m used to that crap by now. I went over to a friends house to work on a group project, turned on his desktop with Win 8 and an SSD, blinked and just stared in shock as it was up and ready in under 10 seconds. Ridiculously worth the extra money even if you only turn it on once a day.

i wanted to throw my last computer out the window because it would take so long to boot and reinstalling windows was like pushing a rock up a hill, these days when i see other people waiting for their computer to boot i feel sorry for them.
