new to this

hey everybody…i am new to the world of high output handheld torches…i did have one of the maglite xl50s but lost it last winter in my yard and didn’t find it until spring by which time the batteries had leaked…it worked once after i cleaned it up and put in fresh batteries…

i tried to join cpf but they have this 3 post rule that i have no intention of following since i am just looking for friendly advice on stuff you guys may have tried and i thought i would cover all my bases by posting my introduction and what i am interested in all in one post…

specifically i am looking at the following flashlights listed in no particular order…all are single cr123 except for the last one…

sunwayman m11r
olight s10 baton
4sevens mini 123a r5
nitecore ea1
sog dark energy 214
lumapower incendio v3u
zebralight sc52

i plan to use sanyo eneloops for the last one and aw rcr123a’s for the others and ultrafire chargers…

any thoughts you may have on these would be greatly appreciated…

thanks

Can't help you with those choices, but want to say welcome to BLF! We're better than that other place anyway.

so i gathered from reading the posts you guys have on the other place

I’m not really familiar with those lights……what are you looking for in a light? what specs?

runtime, brightness, size, batteries, etc etc etc…….The guys here are great at matching a light to what you need!

Welcome, Twogun

I would advise caution the use of rcr123s in the light. A rcr123 is a Li-ion 16340, which starts at 4.2v, more than 30% higher than a primary CR123. Make sure the light can handle the additional voltage. I can say that the first four and last ones are good brands that make quality products. I would suggest you try looking at a 18650-powered light as they generally are still pocket-size lights and will have about 3x the runtime as a single rcr123 light. The Convoy line at Illumination Supply are great lights.

why not go straight to the top

if you want high output... I mean really high I would look at what some of the modders put out. consider vinhn over at CPF. Here's some of his latest offerings. vinhnguyen54 is a member here too.

I don't know your lights. But I have one of the zebralight models. It's a nice headlamp, but now I would probably get this C21Cvn by V54. With a flashlight headband (cf. IOS).

Unless I really want compact, I like the 18650s better as well. Consider this DQG 18650 II (cf. CNQG).

Welcome to BLF, Two Gun.

I'm not familiar with those lights but as GT cautioned, check carefully before using a RCR123 aka 16340 cell, you don't want to destroy a light.

If you end up using a 16340, I think this Xtar charger is a better choice than an Ultrafire.

thanks for the welcome guys…

i have looked at the convoy lights and i am not sure which came first the convoy or some of the others i have looked at that look exactly like the convoy…i am not a big fan of knock offs…

i am looking for a couple or three small flashlights with at least 180 lumens…my requirements are that it be well made/have a friendly ui/single cell and around 50 bucks or less…

the ones i listed seem to be far and away the best of the field in a field that is very crowded…

i know i can buy custom lights or surefires or pelicans or hds but i don’t need to scare a lion away from my kill…i just need to walk my dogs out to their runs on moonless nights or occasionally help out a stranded co-worker in our parking lot…

all of the lights i listed will run rcr123s but i have learned that you have to be careful that you don’t overheat the unit…most of these lights will double the otf when you use an rcr…180/360…214/428…most of these lights can be set to come on at a lower power than full and several of them have a moonlight mode which means that a properly charged battery will last at least a month…

and i plan on using the batteries from aw…they are about as protected as a battery can be…

i also plan on using the sanyo black xx eneloops…a pack of 8 should last 20 years…each one can be recharged 500 times…

ok…so now i think i know which one to buy and it kills two birds with one stone…apparently the sunwayman m10r/m11r/v10r/v11r and the titanium versions and all the sunwayman of the same diameter have the exact same thread pattern which means that heads and bodies are all interchangeable…

the other thing is that the single cr123s are adaptable…for 15 bucks you can buy a double a extender ring which eliminates the cr123…

the coolest thing about the sunwayman is the magnetic control ring…the fact that i can stick with sanyo eneloops seals the deal…

thanks for the input guys…

Welcome to BLF, twogunmojo! If I had to choose from your list it would be the SWM or Zebralight for UI.

thank you

Welcome to BLF! I would add the V11R to your list. Make sure to get the optional AA extender.

Hi twogunmojo and welcome to BLF !

It was nice to read how you came to your decision for the Sunwayman.

Welcome!
I use my SC52 almost daily, whether I’m EDCing it at work or taking it on a run late at night.
Runs perfectly on an Eneloop AA or a lithium ion 14500. You get its full potential of 500 lumens when powered by a 14500 (but only for 60 seconds before it steps down.)

It’s my favorite torch, so small and so powerful.

We're very glad to have you here, twogunmojo!

a licker….really…i used to play res. evil years ago but i stopped at res 3…i still have a ps1 (the small version) around here somewhere…about 4 years ago i introduced my then 4 year old granddaughter to monsters in general and zombies in particular…weirdest kid i know…she just laughs and laughs at the scariest stuff…

thanks for the welcome

i plan to…either the v11r or the m11r…

i try and do my research…i might still get the sog 214just because you can never have too many lights…its design stands out in a crowd…i don’t edc in my pocket…i use a maxpedition remora so i can clip the light inside the bag in its own pocket or outside in its own pouch and not scrape my knuckles…

the sc52 might be the alternate i pick up along with the sog 214…i figure i can run eneloops in the sc52 and the sunwayman m11r using an adapter and keep the sog as backup with a case of 4 cr123s handy…
