Mag 3D for modding

Seeing the price of USD 18.88 for a 3D Maglite at walmart makes me little sad.

There is a reason why these are so popular (build quality, form factor), of course, but the local prices here in Sweden or within Europe are IMO far too high for what you get (latest google research ca 260 SEK = ~40 USD) especially if you're looking only for a host.

Now here's my question: Is there anybody in this forum from the US whom i can paypal for buying and sending a Mag3D to me?

TIA, Huny

You need to check shipping costs first. Last time I sent something from the US to the UK it cost nearly $40 US to ship it. I suspect any savings on the light would disappear in shipping costs.

To be honest, the mag isn't the greatest mod host. The heatsinking is a pain unless you pay another light's cost for a slug, and the switch kind of gets in the way of everything. On the plus side, there are a lot of parts available if you're willing shell out the dough. Power source is also a pain because you're stuck with 3 alkaline d's = $$$, or 3 nihm D's= $$$, or 18650 which are really flacky in that light, or the thing I ended up doing which is use AA's in somewhat crummy but cheap adapters.

Personally I think the <$15 Trustfire 1200 host is a much better deal. Ironically, the dropin's for that is the only cost effective way to get led's into a mag.

Fun is of course a different thing, but two points though: wouldn't the shipping to Sweden be around the price difference? $20? If $20 is a big deal, mag modding is kinda not the best idea?

I had that problem while ago too. All those 15$ Mags in Ebay and everywhere, but 30-40$ for the shipping... No deal. Just wondering how the Chinese or HK companies can send something costing couple of dollars here with shipping included. That just doesn't make any sense.

I ended up finding a used 2D from a local (Finnish) web auction. Paid 8 euros for the light and 6,7 euros for the domestic shipping. But at the end I did get a Mag in good condition for less than 15 euros.

Thanks for the input, guys!

I had hoped it may be not so expensive to put a Mag in a padded envelope and just mail it, but checking USPS homepage I see it's easily around USD 27, sigh. :tired:

I already have a MC-E Mag 3 D with a selfbuilt slug for heatsinking (my first real mod actually, really ugly but all mine), so no additional costs here [edit: bc now I know how to build my own slug]. And I have some ideas for the switch involving Don's QTC pills which require the original Mag switch assembly as a basis. And then, I just like the 3 D form factor.

Well, guess I'll have to wait till one of my mates or I visit the US next time. (I just hope my XM-L has not become obsolete by then... :~ )
