EDC - an anomoly to everyone..

Helping a student out today find her lost locket in a blacked out gymnasium I mentioned to her boyfriend that "this is why I carry a flashlight at all times"..he looked at me like I was crazy and kind of laughed..I told him that I was serious and pulled out my little itp A1 that I carry everwhere..it's not my main EDC but is a backup to my EDC because it just disappears in my pocket (I don't carry it on my keys to preserve the finish)..he was amazed that it could put out so much light and be so small..I then pulled out my uf-980l that is on my belt and he was shocked at what it did to the dark..I probably haven't converted anyone but am amazed that this flashlight concept is so strange to people that require light on a daily basis..i've even had to rescue students out of the bush because they couldn't see and even they laughed at the concept of an EDC..I just rescued them from a night in the woods and they still find it funny..we really can't be wire this backwards to everyone else can we??

Yep. I find it amazing how often I use a flashlight since I started keeping one on my person. I guess you just get used to trying to see in the dark and don't realize how much help one is until it's always on hand.

I always thought if you were going to carry a firearm, you should carry a light too. No point in being able to shoot what you cant properly identify. You'd be amazed at what percentage of Concealed Carry permit holders DON'T carry a light.

I'd like to think they are the ones that are wired backwards and we got it right, but I guess the reverse is equally plausible depending on your viewpoint.

I agree with this lol

I get my share of amazement when i pull out my EDC for checking some connection at the back of a server rack. Many tell taht how fortunate you carry one... but think how weird is actually to have one in pocket...

Anyway, i use my flashlight almost on a daily basis. When need be, nothing more.

It's eighteen months now since I really started EDC'ing a flashlight again- usually my MiniM@g with an XR-E.

A few months before my gal broke up with me for absolutely no apparent reason (women...), I had given her a nice light she could easily EDC in her purse. Again, a MiniM@g/ XR-E mod, titanium-colored edition, complete with neoprene covering with finger/ belt strap and a snap hook. While she went bragging everywhere about her new bright light, she did not use it, and did not EDC it in particular. Instead, she left it at home whenever she knew there was no opportunity to show it off.

Of course she ran into a situation where she would have needed the light. Last I heard was she had tripped over something in some dark parking lot and is now suffering from double ligament rupture.

Trust and honesty goes a long way... so does EDC.

Well said

I'm amazed that people get hung up on the biggest and brightest light ever made ..i thought this was a newbie mistake ..It's clear that non flashaholics are impressed with an xre..any q3 will do ..130 lumens leaves them breathless . The truth of the matter is they are the customer and we are the geek.to spend 75$ on a light is retarded .half that is silly and unless it's under 15$ no one on the planet will buy it .they will default to a piece of plastic junk or a 9 led harbor frieght light and still say .. oh wow it's bright ...and my wife loves the purple too ..she likes purple ..Don't mention that it means horrible . once you show them 900 lumens they want it ....but refuse to pay for it .

We are the odd ones .

Well Boaz,

my buddy cherishes the L2P I got for him, along with a five-mode XM-L dropin... but he cherishes it SO much that he doesn't dare to use it, because it "might get used up and wear out"... potential shelf queen here!

But then, guess what he uses every day both at work and at home, and what he really loves? Yup, the homebuilt XM-L 3xAAA light I built for him. 700mA, what's that pullin' on a T6? 280 lumens, maybe? or less? Anyhows, I was happy with the output, and he was downright STOKED. And still is to this very day - he even let go of his Zweibrueder LED-Lenser P7. Although I must say the P7 is a nice light.

(tries-to-stuff-XML-into-all-his-lights-too-but-still-loves-the-XRE-as-well)

Simon

p.s.: when all you have left in absolute darkess is a book of matches, a 9pcs- or 12pcs-5mm-LED cluster light will mean HEAVEN for you! With fresh cells, they perform adequatly. Besides, you can always shoehorn some P60 dropin in there. Be creative...!

p.p.s.: No offense, k? I wasn't hollering or badmouthing or anything. Just adding a little controversy. Heck, you know tons more than I do about LED lights!

I have friends who love their XMLs but Boaz is right We are the odd ones.

Its a minority group ... Thing .

Your on the leeding edge of technology / oh PS , any one checked out antigravity recently ?

http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/ufos-the-secret-evidence/ At the end is a bit on antigravity device , but interesting doco , and one gets what the Germans may have been up to

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QhqEoRvpEA you tube , short version , but .

Looks like there onto something ...

People often laugh that I:

A. own so many flashlights (it's nothing compared to many people here)

B. always have at least one light on me.

Then, when the power goes out at work, the battery dies on their car or needs to change a tire, they know to come and ask me to use a flashlight. If you continue to borrow my lights, how foolish is it for me to have them!?

I EDC these items:

- Fenix LD01 (1xAAA)

- Ultrafire WF-500 with 5x XR-E drop-in

- Garmin GPSMap 60CSx

- camera

- phone

- USB stick

- triple-jet lighter

- multi-bit screwdriver

- compact multi-tool

- tape measure

- laser pointer

Sometimes people say how handy it was that I had item X with me, without knowing I had the other 10 items too.

I felt bad because i only had an 100 lumen xpg AAA on my keychain when the tornadoes went by us ..Everyone looked at me and said ..Boaz has lights on him...i felt bad because i usually have a nitecore on me as well as a SS AAA N-light

We had golf ball sized hail that beat everyones cars to death.

Couldn't agree more. Even many of my friends who have a law enforcement and/or military background (ie. the people who know that your very survival might depend on having a reliable and powerful flashlight that just works(tm) when you need it to; not the CPF types who will obsess over greasing every o-ring for fear that they might get trapped in some Indiana Jones movie on their way to the office) don't really give a crap about the light attached to their weapons or belts. Some do but for most, it's just a tool. It's supposed to work and that's it. And if you have to pay for it yourself, it had better be cheap. That's just the way it is. Training has something to do with it and it has come a long way in the past decade (particularly in LE circles, not that I'm a big fan of the militarization of our police departments) but as far as 99% of the population is concerned, Maglite will always equal quality because that's all they know.

And, let's be honest here, we're talking about something we care about, yes, but most people pretty much think of a flashlight as disposable. One is as good as the next and the main concern is that it doesn't eat batteries.
