SOLD OUT: Aspherical lens adapter for HD2010 ! ))))))))

HI all,

That's right all. Quickly easily convert your HD2010 to an aspherical light with no permanent modding or expensive parts required!

The lens sits deep inside the factory head of the HD to fully protect the lens even while head standing.

Ok, so how does it work?

In order to keep with the spirit in which this great forum was founded ("budget" light forum), I have done everything I can think of to keep the price absolutely as low as possible.

For this reason the sale in this thread is for the ring adpters ONLY shown here. NO lens is included. I will give every one the link to exactly the lens I used for this project ( some of you may already have them). This keeps my investment low thereby keeping cost low for you.

Since this is a DIY part, there will be some "Y" involved. Dont worry nothing hard :)

Using the factory pill the lens simply drops in the head and the adapter ring slides over it, then the bezel is screwed down, and your done. That simple.

Since many of use are using custom pills some ajustment may be required to achive perfect focus. IE either unscrewing the pill a hair or possibly raising the lens a tad.

Now in order to raise the lens slightly I could have machined an additional $10-12 dollar part, but rather than that I decided to go with this.

Yep thats right electrical tape. Just a small piece on the side wall of the light will allow you to raise the lens as much or as little as needed. I realize "tape" doesnt exactly scream professional. It does however scream FREE!!!

So whats the bottom line? Well what you will need is one of these.

And one of these.

This lens is a great performer and it fits the HD with one of my adapters like a glove.

Again this sale is for the ring adapter only, in your choice of black or grey, you will need to order your own lens from the link above :).

Shipping is $4 world wide.

Price is

1 x $7

2x $6 each

3+ $5 each

ALL SOLD THANKS :)

Looks like you were right, I do have several of those already on hand. Never even thought about putting one in THAT light!

With the glass lens in place, the bezel won’t screw down all the way….is this what your ring does? Allow the bezel to screw down and supply means to weatherproof the light?

So, for $11, my HD2010 can be an aspheric, have you checked throw with this? Measured Lumens? Toasted marshmallows? Turned off streetlights?

Of course, I have to get one. And you should be ashamed. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oops, there goes another ten spot…

We need pics and data! Toasted marshmallows would be nice too.

I don’t normally like Aspherics, but this one I just gotta try!

Thanks Matt!

Yes, the bezel screws all the way down. I left the oring that was under the factory lens out. If you have to raise the lens any there may be a slight lift on the bezel.

I havent had a chance to do any numbers testing with this light yet. I am very familiar with this lens ( part of the reason I chose it). Based on my experience with the lens a de-domed cree on a sinkpad will pobly net you in the 180,000 lux range. I havent attempted the marshmallows thing yet.

PP sent for 2 of each. How about you use that lathe to turn out chess pieces or something for a while?

I shouldn't. Please post beam shots to weaken my willpower.

Pictures of it in action!!!

For the newbies of us, which HD2010 is the one to get and from where and how much for the whole package including lens and adapter?

Ah yeah, beamshots please : >

Thanks

I wonder about the reflector, does an aspheric do better without the reflector or with?

That’s pretty awesome. Thanks for offering this to us!

I don't think they'll both fit in at the same time. After all, if tape inside the head can act as a spacer how could you possibly get the reflector in there?

I tried another aspheric with the reflector in. Maybe it had a tighter hotspot. Maybe. The results were meh.

I'm sure this is much better.

Sounds like a great idea. Simple and cheap way to see if you like an aspheric or not.

The reflector has to come out. You should not run a reflector with an aspheric and besides, they both will not fit, since the aspheric actually sits down inside the head a little ways. Before you de-dome, you might want to try it with the dome still on, (if it is on), to see if you like the square die you will get. Some don't prefer it at all, others like it. I almost would like to try it in the 2010 I have with the XP-G in it, just to see.

Yes, an aspheric with reflector gives more output, but that extra output is wasted in a horrible beam and is not going to the hotspot.

What a great idea to make such an adapter ring for us lesser-among-equals-without-a-lathe. I have no hd2010 unfortunately, otherwise I would certainly want this dead cheap aspherics kit. Thanks for making it possible VoB!

Are there beamshot pics of an HD2010 aspherical anywhere on the interwebs? I can’t seem to find any.

Whoa, wait a minute…dome-on makes the square die shaped hot spot but dome-off does not?

The aspheric lens needs to be able to pick up the wide angle light and then focus it, the reflector would mess up the focus?

And yeah I know, a dremel tool makes guys like me respect nothing, the reflector could easily (or not so easily) be cut down to fit under the lens. For the record, sitting this aspheric on top of the lens on my K3 shows the MT-G2’s multi-faceted die structure on the wall quite plainly. I took the crenelated bezel off so the aspheric could sit closer. It would have to be just a bit closer to be fully in focus, and this is done with the reflector in place. Granted, the reflector on the K3 is not deep, but if I cut the reflector in the HD2010 down to fit under the aspheric lens it would’t be deep either. And all the available light would be bouncing around off mirror finish surfaces instead of matt grey surfaces. (get it? matt grey, instead of matte grey? hehehe)

So how about it? Does a de-domed emitter still show the actual die through the aspheric?

EDIT: Nevermind, die still show’s as square regardless of dome-on or dome-off.

And to think I was wondering what to do with my 3rd HD2010 and it’s dodgy reflector…I can only conclude it was predestined for this aspheric mod!

I would still like to see beamshots, but I ordered it anyway. I don't have the right size aspheric, so it'll be weeks to months before I can do beamshots.
