[04-DEC-2013] Minor code refactoring of the email notification system and improved message deliverability

Hi everyone,

I just finished making some minor code changes to the system that sends email notifications about forum activity. You shouldn’t notice any changes in functionality. Rather, this was a refactoring of the code to make it more compatible with future changes to the Drupal system. If you do notice any changes, please do let me know.

Additionally, I forgot to mention that last week I improved the email delivery system to make it less likely that email providers (especially Gmail) will classify BLF notification messages as spam.

Thanks as always for being a part of BLF. Have fun!

:beer:

I sense a temporal anomaly.

I knew you were in some far off timezone.
It’s only the 4th here on my planet.

Thanks for the future change !

Ha! Seems that I over-compensated a bit for GMT.

I find the e-mail from blf very unreliable. I run my own mail server, so I know when mail gets to me and when it doesn’t.

I won’t get an e-mail for a notification of a reply, and because I never get it, it quits sending me more notifications, so I never ever get notification :frowning:

Also, when clicking on the link in the e-mail I often find times where I’m not signed in, so the blf server won’t register that I’ve read the updated thread, so again, it will never send me notifications again.

I’ll keep an eye out and see if your updates have improved it :smiley:

Yes, this is an issue. I guess my recommendation would be to stay logged in. The session should persist between browsing sessions.

[Edit: It looks like my reply should have generated a notification for you. Did you receive it?]

Sure damn did, and when I clicked the link, I was signed in.

I tell it to always keep me signed in, but sometimes it “forgets”. BLF is the only forum where I have this issue.

Do you have something against vbulletin or what? lol.

-Jamie M.

Yes, actually. :wink: Drupal has its quirks, but it’s an open system that is infinitely extensible. vBulletin is closed and proprietary, and has had some high-profile security breaches and hackings as of late.

Haha, k. Just checkin :wink:

One of my other forums (gtamotorcycle.com) was hacked (running vbulletin). It was hacked over and over for about a month but looks like they got it patched up.

Why if I want to leave a bunch of spaces between lines.

Like from here ->

To here ->

It barely leaves any space, when I’ve put like 10?? :slight_smile:

Case in point. :open_mouth: Yikes, that’s rough.

It’s configured to be compatible with a set of CSS styles, where you would normally just define the amount of space between headings or paragraphs and never deviate from that. If you really want to, though, you can add </br> tags to…

…add whitespace.
