Budget replacement LED's for Maglites

Not sure if anyone has posted before...but I hope this helps

I found some viable replacement LED bulbs a while back...I had a 18vdc light that came in my Porter Cable saw/drill/sawsall kit, it was a standard incandescent bulb..of course it broke and I bought a replacement bulb for like $20 at Lowes, it fit in a Dewalt...problem was it got INSANELY hot and almost melted the plastic lock ring housing

I found these bulbs online and they work incredibly well for "utility" work around the house, and don't get hot, and brought back 2 4xC cell maglite that I thought were toast

B series flanged LED bulbs (on a few of the models you have to make sure you get the right voltage)

I believe most maglites show lumens to be like 118 or so...the "maglite" replacement led's usually run $30-40, these push 100 lumens for $11 (remember you have to select the right voltage for the number of cells you have)

I used a Terralux, http://www.batteryjunction.com/tle-6exb.html and It is really bright, but the ones you found look like a better deal, and are probably the same. I replaced the lamp in a Mag Lite 3 C cell light. Very happy with it.

Thanks,
Jerry

Lowes has a sale once a year where you can buy 2D or 3D LED maglites for $15. And of course, these already come equipped with the superior “rebel” reflector.

They offer Maglites with an LED bulb, and a ‘Rebel reflector’? Is this a special reflector? I have a (3) D cell Maglite. I was looking at a Terralux LED that would put out about 120 lumens they said, for around $16. What does the Rebel reflector do?

thanks for any info…

patrick

All new D sized LED maglites come with the “rebel” reflector, which is specifically designed to focus the LED. The reflector got its name when maglite introduced the rebel emitter into its line for this light 3 years ago. They have since converted to using the xp-e emitter for a slight bump in lumens. If you search, you will find dozens of threads concerning the subject, including the manufacturers website. The sale includes an entire new LED maglite, not just some grossly overpriced LED drop-in.

The Rebel reflector will fit the older incan lights - the heads are identical inside and out - the only difference is that the LED models have a shorter threaded section on the battery tube. You need to cut off about 1/8" of the tube or else the reflector will hit the tube when the head is screwed all the way down. Or if you don't already have one just buy the current LED version light.
