Oldbobk,

True to Budgetlight forum tradition, I only recommend good value for money light.

From aliexpress, the Guanzhou Sanmak SM5200 55W version is usd52. Shipping to my country is 36. To USA is 54 I think.

If you notice closely, the Guanzhou Sanmak SM5200 is a very close cousin to the Yao 35/80W HID. The Yao 35/80 uses Li-ion, has dual wattage, and costs close to 600 bucks if I am not wrong.

The difference between 55W and 75W is slight, but noticeable. A 75W slim ballast kit (2 ballasts, 2 bulbs) is $70 shipped same price to SG or USA as its by China Post. The most powerful is 100W but it is the regular sized ballast which is much bigger/thicker and cannot fit this host. It can fit a Thor X Colossus, that big 9" reflector one. But it is really big and unwieldy, but throw is crazy after tweaking the focus.

I purchased another 55W light with a 7" reflector (Yilida YD-15000) from another guy but he shipped me this same SM5200 light, and its now 55W but 35W version. Doesn't matter since I am gonna mod it anyway. Negotiated a partial refund and paid usd65 shipped for the second SM5200. Innocent

You can play with the bulb colour temperature etc... 2 bulbs costs usd11.60 shipped (nobody sells singly). That's the price of a XM-L?

Here's Stollman's build using the big black finned ballast which is regular size. The slim ballast is smaller and much thinner. 2/3 the size of a iPhone 4 and same thickness.

Any shots of the slim ballast?

Here it is, 75W slim ballast. Does not show the dimensions, but you can have an idea w.r.t the connectors' size and the 23kV box.

Hi 2100,

Woow, very nice mod on the HID!

Thanks for sharing!

Think I gonna buy also a SM5200 and mod it to 75w.

Please a link for the H3 bulbs (prefere a 4300k bulb)

I already have a Titanium Inovation L35 HID light, wanna go more to the extreme with a 75w and bigger reflector.

This SM5200 seems the light that's simple to mod?

By dual do you mean you have two of them or the two pictures?

Haha....yeah I actually have 2 (the second one is a long story, it was a mistake made by the seller....i'd not buy 2 of the same light).

Thommy, actually i am sure you'd be happy with the "stock" 55W. Seriously going from 55-> 75 does not bring that much of a change. Eg, it does not mean that the throw is upgraded from 1km to 1.2km. Close ranges you can see the hotspot being bigger, and i can do that because i have a frame of reference by having 2 lights ie A-B comparison. More importantly in my case, my second light was sent to me as a 35W version so (1) the light was a mistake and (2) even the power was a mistake, hence from 35W-> 70W jump its a lot. As in, i don't have use for a 35W light. Also for my 1st HID its 55W-> 75W, so i have a spare 55W ballast now, which will go into my 35W Amondotech 3152 which i purchased years ago. So it was a worthwhile upgrade exercise. Hey we are in Budgetlight forum! Cool

I do not think the L35/N35 can take the current draw of 75W, and there's no space inside. If you really wanna "play" with HID, get the Thor X colossus with the 9" reflector and 12V 7AH SLA inside, and a 100W kit. The bulb may need some focusing with some shims/spacers....or you can use some copper wire too going round the reflector socket area.... its not difficult. That's the fun.

PS. All these chinese auto ballasts, including whatever is being sold in your country but still of these MIC type, denote the input power as the advertised power. And some of them get close the rated figure, eg 75W rated and they will draw say 67W, but others they may just draw 58W. So if you have a stock light but the ballast is good, then you upgrade to a less well-specced ballast, you may be very hard pressed to tell the diff. I have to warn you guys about this first. In 55W form, the SM5200 has an actual range of 1.1-1.2km on a very reflective target in the dark eg Silver aluminum panelled building.

Oh...one very important thing to ask them (that aliexpress store which I linked) to do, is to line the internal cavity with newspapers or bubble wrap or something. The front part of the light is very easy to take out to access the internals, you just screw the plastic bezel out, as you'd do with a P60 drop in, 20 seconds job. The ballast inside seems to be not secured, but you can easily fix that with 3M heavy duty foam tape with no issues regarding heat/sticky power I can assure you as I have done it myself. So during the journey it would hit against the reflector and damage it with pokermarks. The guys are very nice, they sent me a new replacement reflector via DPEX 2 days courier. For my light the power socket for the light <-> battery came loose too, took while to troubleshoot, but its just a matter of pushing it back in only. Shouldn't be an issue, HIDs are not rocket science and are pretty reliable. Laughing

Thanks 2100 for the additional comment

So you would not buy the 75w ballast if you had only the stock 55w ?

75w ballast is not really cheap!

I see they have increased the price for the hid and also the shipping costs (55.67+63.85 shipping)

Shipping is more expensive than the hid itself

Why they don't ship by HK Post or China Post?

PS, what's the color of the stock HID bulb?

Yeah after some ceiling bounce tests last night and looking at the camera histogram (pretty accurate, nearly as accurate as a light meter), the difference is really small. Also AB side-by-side comparison with the 55W and 75W, not much difference.

Its usd108 to USA and still $88 to my country. Its a big heavy light, comes in a big box, so the "free shipping by DX/manafont" does not count here. (they already included in the price, Shenzhen wholesale always sells it a couple of $7-10 less for the regular LEDs). Anyway I think on Amazon and other US based online stores there are also similar lights in the 70-$80 range excluding shipping, but I think I have only seen 35W versions.

Life is short.....I ordered a 12V 100W kit. Laughing

lol I put a 50W hid on my bike and it blinded everyone

Hmm this wants me to buy a 100W hid kit for my VEC192. dont have any money now but probably in a couple months

What kind battery is in it? If it's an SLA, you think they'll give you a discount to ship without it? $50 for shipping on $50 item seems kinda excessive.

Yeah, good hosts, lots of built examples in flashlight-forums and CPF. Reflector quality is so-so but doable for long arc esp for the 75-100W bulbs with bigger length and arc chambers. Free shipping to USA, not to Singapore. Laughing

Unfortunately that is way it is for China -> USA. Its via EMS aka "faster" so not too bad (USPS Express Mail standard, tracked all the way including if its stuck at customs which is rare...but i experienced that for 1 of my 405nm....luckily it was refunded by aliexpress seller).

CPAM/HKAM is rare for boxes of this size/weight. Smaller stuff is no issue, that's why LEDs in Manafont/DX/focalprice no issue. Its like USPS First Class, can't do that. Priority is much more expensive and its closer to USPS Express Mail pricings just a tad slower from US -> SIN and without the tight tracking.

There is another one with 8"/210mm reflector which is pretty big and is focusable. Beam quality on white wall won't be good, but heck we are talking about "budget" super throwers here that easily outperforms in this area a SR90/PH50 (the PH50 actually outthrows SR90 - check out the youtube vids of a French guy comparing them). BVH said he does not like this one, but it should perform "ok".

http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/324155952-auto-working-HID-Light-8-HID-Handheld-Light-12v-55W-wholesalers.html usd75 shipped to USA, 79 shipped to Belgium. Laughing Good if you already have your SLA, just clip it on.

USA bros already have a decent selection in your home country.

Geez, that's a good host. But quite a lot of work to be done. You might wanna consider dual ultra slim ballast 55W kit so that its not expensive (they are only like $50-60 shipped to USA), and you can use the original SLA inside because the ballasts fit. Cheaper on the wallet.

I'm planning to put the ballasts inside and running an external battery pack . i wanna make a bfl like stollman though so its going the dual 100w route.

I see. Then let me give you my 100W link. I just purchased it, asking him if he really is shipping via DHL free shipping as stated. (you can see my purchase at the purchase history list down there LOL!)

http://www.aliexpress.com/store/204264/210557757-439075432/12V-24V-100W-HID-XENON-KIT-H9-H11-single-or-lots-be-chosen-high-power-and.html

If the input is really 12-12.5V under load thereabouts (SLA voltage) and 9A, then it is good. BVH tested this type and got approx 84W output. One of his ballast pumped out 114W, but this is bad for the bulbs....you only get a few hrs burn time at best. The Chinese bulbs are usually underspeced, a lot depends on bulb chamber size and envelope thickness, too hot and they get deformed. Bursting is not too dangerous, it isn't high pressure.

PS. Be careful of the dangerous voltages, 23kV is just the initial spark for a few milliseconds, but 100V steady-state isn't fun either.

The buyer does not ship the 100W ballast to Malaysia?! I thought my country is just next to yours? @@
