Review Fenix HP05 - 3xAA headlamp

At the end of 2013, Fenix sent me this cool headlamp for review. So here are some shots to share.

It’s a headlamp, powered with 3 x AA batteries, shinning at max 350 lumens.

Firs Impression
I consider this is my first headlamp. I have Zebralight SC51 but rarely used it as headlamp.

Because this one is a prototype, it came with plain cardboard box, with no logo or fancy manual book, just some couple of A4 papers with manual printed on them.

Build quality is superb. Strong plastic and metal (aluminum) frame for better protection. Lens cover is very clear, no complaint on built quality.

I can tilt the lamp up to 60 degree, perfect for seeing any direction. I can see stuffs under my nose, or something faraway just by tilting the headlamp.

One thing I like from this headlamp is the battery box. I can open the box and replace the batteries just by using one hand. By looking at picture below, I’m sure you’ll understand how easy it’s to open the case.

I’ll continue on the next post for beamshots…

The next building is a church. I was about 100 meters from the church.

I use no tripod. Just put this headlamp and camera on a concrete block. Not very good beamshot picture because some beam is biased on the paddy field.

Next shot, approximately 30 meters.

And here’s 2 meters shot. This is what will you see when you wear this headlamp on your head. You may see that the beam profile is too narrow for this distance.

And here’s my conclusion after using this headlamp for couple of days:

Pros:

  • Using AA batteries, available almost everywhere on earth.
  • 4 different levels, from 4 lumens to 350 lumens. Suitable for both close range to long range sighting.
  • Beam profile is throw, no need another flashlight for spotting faraway objects
  • Red light is pretty bright and very helpful for close range sighting (up to 1 meter).
  • Reverse polarity protection
  • Cable is well-sealed. Survived the rain overnight.

Cons:

  • On default position, two buttons are half covered. I must tilt it first to access the buttons.
  • Throwy beam profile, my sight was kinda limited on close range sighting (1-3 meters).
  • Battery box is a bit bulky, although it’s not heavy at all.

And here’s a bonus picture

Just ask me any question about this headlamp, I’ll try to answer it.
