Just got the neutral white today. It works but the quality is TERRIBLE… I won’t even count the green tint around hotspot and purple spill.
- The lens on the inside and the reflector is FULL OF DUST (hundreds of particles). I have not tried opening it yet to clean it but I cleaned the outside with a microfibre cloth and it is still very dusty. It’s as if this was assembled in a desert…
- The metal square piece around the buttons is not seated right. One side sticks out and feels very sharp and rough.
- There is no grease. The threads sound like fingernails on a blackboard. The manual says it comes greased.
- There are dents in the anodization.
- It makes buzzing noises when using different modes like strobe. Maybe it’s coil whine (normal ?)
Having paid $54 US for a AA light I really expected better quality. Even my L2P with 3x Nichia sportac is FAR superior in terms of quality.
Sent Bill an email. Hope he takes care of this or PayPal here I come.
sucks to hear that, probably just a bad qc, i had both d40a purchased from doingoutdoor and i’m very happy with both of them, i’m very sure bill will take good care of you. good luck bro
Send e-mail to the seller, request replacement and you should receive it ;)!
Mine came with imperfections - small dents at the bottom in anodization, I didnt want to ship the bottom to seller and wait for new one so I settled for 5$ refund.
Now it has more scratches/dents after using it for a while, so its all good, even tho, I was slightly upset about its quality!
Your case seems to be extreme, I wonder if they check lights before shipping out or are trying to clear stock hoping that buyers will agree with receiving sub-par lights and settle for partial refunds?
I also once raised question here in BLF about their lights maybe being b-stock/factory seconds :D?
There is no way this one would have passed QC (lol QC in China)
What pisses me off is that Bill said it was 4C (which it isn’t as I found out after contacting sunwayman). I then told him that I will only buy it on the condition that it is checked for the tint/scratches/dust inside/ threads ect. Basically I told him to check for everything that is wrong in this light. It even said to check for all this in the PayPal instructions. Clearly nothing was checked……
Guess I’m not alone with the terrible condition of D40A purchased from Doingoutdoor.
I have had about the same condition as yours, aside from the dusty reflector, glass, the LED centering plastic also came totally misaligned, it hung over one of the XM-L2 die edge. The battery carrier contacts also badly scored too.
Wow! It seems like doing outdoor is a reputable dealer, but do you think you may have gotten a counterfeit? I have two D40A’s and several other Sunwayman lights and all of them are top quality pieces with none of the issues you have with yours. What a bummer! You should send that one back and get a D40Avn from Vinh54 over on CPF. It will be brighter, with a great tint and if necessary he cleans up any poor connections or possible issues with the internals.
If I paid good money for a brand-name flashlight, I’d expect nothing less than top-notch quality. SWM is well-known for its anodizing, fit and finish and generally accepted as a premium brand.
I’m thinking counterfeit product
Possible. The anodizing feels cheap sort of like my clone SRK. The anodization on my solarforce L2P feels far superior. That or Bill sent me B stock hoping I won’t notice…
He offered a $5 discount but no way am I accepting that. I won’t even pay half of what I paid for this junk and have told him I’ll accept no less than 50% refund. That or I send it back and he pays for shipping.
The driver would be difficult to fake and easy to uncover if they tried. I suppose a quality reject is the same as counterfeit. Either way, it shouldn't have been sold to you as the real deal.
I received a Sunwayman C20C a few days ago and was pretty impressed with the build quality. Absolutely zero dust on the lens and reflector. It looked like it was assembled in a clean room. The o-rings were also nicely lubed.
