Cree releasing 100W LED light bulb equivalent

http://www.cree.com/News-and-Events/Cree-News/Press-Releases/2014/March/100W-bulb

wonder what kind of battery i will need to have one in a flashlight, LMAO… carry a car battery in a backpack, light on a hose to the battery, kinda look like the guys in “ghostusters”?? LMAO…

Hmmm… the Emitter part inside could make a good flooder with a good lower voltage driver. :stuck_out_tongue:

It uses 18W, but you can also buy 40W, 60W and 75W equivalents which may need less batteries, one could buy the 40W and under drive it for camping, i believe it uses about 6W of electricity

the volts + watts + amps factor is probally goign to increase to drive the bulb’s emitter stup with a lower voltage driver using Lithium cells. Im curious though now. i might have to pick up the 60 watt version to disect it, and see if it can be modded to run in my Coleman 8-D LED lantern.

there is a thread on it with pics, it uses xb-d chips or something similar
i assume if you rewired it and ripped out the ac-dc circuitry you could run it with a lithium cell or two, it could make a good flood light especially in a power outage

I will have to do that then for the Flashaholic Camp Meet weekend. :stuck_out_tongue:

All the LEDs are wired in series… too much rewiring to be practical for battery mods.

Good. The other bulbs weren't nearly bright enough for me. The 60W equivalent bulbs I have are more like mood lighting, but not that useful for performing tasks. Ideally I'd like a 150W or 250W equivalent, but at least this gets me a step closer.

me too, i would like 200W equivalent i would replace all my bulbs in the house with it (if i could afford them)

These are already on sale at Home Depot. Just search on ‘Cree’. You can find them for under $19 a copy when you buy a 5-pack.

I just pulled the trigger on a 5 pack of them from Home Depot. I need more light in my work shop.

It’s about darn time they came out with an LED equivalent of a 100 watt incan. NONE of the others were bright enough for me. As soon as I see one, I’m snatching one up to try and if it works properly, I will get a bunch of them. I wonder if they will have temperature choices?

they have 2700k and 5000k

Good to know. I will get one of each.

This innovative product gives consumers more reasons to replace their energy-wasting incandescent bulbs by LED Bulb.

Doesnt a 100 watt CFL at 26 watts for $2 make more sense? I CANNOT justify $100 for 5 lightbulbs!!! I will consider them when the price comes down to something a bit more reasonable…

In many situations yes, but keep in mind you will buy many CFLs over the lifetime of this one LED.
If your using it for several hours a day of use the lifetime cost would be similar for each (say 5-8 CFLs and a bit more electricity vs 1 LED).
If your using it in a bathroom or hallway or other place where its only used a few minutes at a time then the economics favour LED (10-15 CFLs and a bit more electricity vs 1 LED) because CFLs only last their rated life if used for over an hour each time you start them.

Two things to note, most $2 CFLs are low quality and the LED price will continue to drop in the coming years.

I ordered 10 PAR 16 for my recessed lighting with natural white 2 months ago from Aliexpress supplier for $3.25 each. My wife didn’t like it because it was too blue. So I place another order for 10 more in warm white 2 weeks ago from the same supplier. They told me because of the increase in material, the bulbs will cost $4.25 each.

It seems the prices are increasing and not decreasing for now.

thats a different market, your buying unsafe chinese yesteryear stuff that they charge what that batch cost from whatever supplier they are using this week plus who knows how many middlemen
