Which Skyray? Need Some Advice.

Hi Guys,

First time poster here. I’m planning on buying a Skyray King, but am torn. There are so many knockoffs that I have no idea which one to buy. I’ve been doing research for the past few days to help me make my choice.

I’ve narrowed it down to the following

1. Skyray Kung - 4x XML-U2 from Brotherhuang1983 on ebay

2. Skyray King - 4x XM-L2 on eBay (5 mode)

3. Skyray King - from CNQG

I’ve read good things about the Kung, and the gunmetal color + red makes it really appealing to me. However, I’ve also read that it gets hot (at least the XML-T6 version) - with the XML-U2, should I expect the same amount of heat? Or would it run cooler? I’ve read posts that it gets uncomfortable to handle after 10 minutes.

That being said, are all of these going to end up being too hot to hold after a prolonged amount of time?

Thanks.

They will all get hot, after prolonged use, as far as I know. If i were to buy buy one again, I would get the 7x XM-L2 that someone had posted about on here for around $35 or so, a few weeks ago. I'm sure a few members got in on that deal, so maybe they can chime in on where to get it.

On second thought, I would probably get a SupFire M6 from Mountain Electronics instead of a SRK.

This one is gold with 3 XM-L2 emitters. Do a search on this forum and you’ll see that it is good quality with a driver that’s easy to mod. It can really put up a wall of light.

I can’t speak to the 3 you have listed.

To me there are only 2 choices:

M6 - Far superior quality all the way around. It's a 3 emitter. The reflector shape give is more throw which is good as all multiemitters have too much flood for my taste. Not much more money than a SRK. I haven't shopped for one in a while now, but I noticed member RMM sells them at a good price.

Kung (4 emitter). Seems to have the best throw of the SRK's and wider spill. Not nearly as nice as the M6, but I like the beam pattern best of the SRK's. Not sure who you should buy one from.

i have the gun-metal color Skyray Kung – 4x XML-U2 from Brotherhuang1983 in a 3-mode, ( High, medium, Low) and its my favourite of the 7 SRK’s i have in my collection. I did a resistor mod to the driver and its a beast for sheer output, but gets hot quickly on high, but on low its still a powerfull light and will run for hours.

The supfire m6 from mtnelectronics looks to be around the same price as the Kung on eBay from broHuang.

It seems that it’s either the Kung or the M6 now. How does the M6 fare in terms of heat?

Hopefully RaceR86 can chime in because he modded an M6 to like 3 amps per emitter. Mine is stock and seems to handle heat fine. It's much more solid and heavy light. Feels awesome in hand.

EDIT: Here's RaceR86's thread

Thermally, it is probably the best of the "soupcan" style lights. It has a nice, thick, integral LED shelf instead of the threaded in aluminum shelfs that most of the SRKs have (the head is one solid piece of aluminum.) Some of the SRK threaded shelfs are pretty good (the good Securitying comes to mind) but there are some that make very poor contact with the body.

For people who does not mod. I think Supfire M6 is the safest choice. Its well built. Im not a fan of the stock UI though.

Lots of inconsistency in the Chinese SRKs, so its usually a gamble. One example.

Temperature depends on the driver current, not the emitters. Driver current can be quite random in the Chinese SRKs. But most SRK sized lights will get very hot on high. Even stock.

In general id take the lights with 3-4 emitters.

If I were to get only one of this style/size light, I’d get the Solarstorm Warrior, no contest. If I wanted the best output/flood without modding myself, or PWM of the “infinitely variable switch” bothers you, I’d get RMM’s modded M6. All of this style of light will get hot to handle running for more than 10 minutes if they are driven adequately. With the non-modded Warrior/SRK/M6, if you continuously use your hand contact as a heat sink, you can run it through an entire battery life usually, but very uncomfortably for a while at about 10-30 minutes range for some. You can always lower the mode. Just don’t leave any of them tailstanding on high for any extended length of time.

I have owned lots of them and this is the best of the SRK’s

This is a 4x XM-L2 with the Best JB Driver that everyone is looking for. It has three modes with High, Medium and Low plus hidden blinky.

This driver is good the way it is and even better with a simple mod. Either way it’s a great light. I have bought 5 of these from this seller and they have all arrived fast with the E-Packet shipping.

I opted for an M6. To me it was a no brainer. I got it from RMM. Can’t wait to get it!

Thanks for the input guys. It’s much appreciated.

I wish I had researched like you before doing my early purchases. Congrats on your new light to be.

nice  you have a link to the M6 sale site ?

I got it from RMM. Here is the link:

Thanks. i just registered an account there to order some components, and maybe the M6.

I just got my M6. Let’s just say…holy crap! This is one bright flashlight! Glad I bought it

I’ve got a 5x xml2 king coming in from tmart.

Here’s hoping that it’ll be stronger than the Kung with 4x xml2s. IIRC the 6x and 7x version were not as good as the Kung, being on par with the original SRK but more floody.

Here’s a thought. Anyone tried mounting the M6 on a bike yet? It’s got a tripod mount, so wouldn’t a camera mount for a bike work (or would it be too heavy?). Something like this:
