Don’t feel bad, a HUGE part of it is how the store is run. Another large part is how often you are in the store and how good your memory is, then throw in a pretty healthy serving of good luck. The only thing left is skill. LOL

The HD closer to my home has still been selling the energizer lanterns for full price when my work HD has 20 of them on the clearance rack for less than $5.

The 2, 3, 6 price is the penny digit of the price. It encodes where on the path from FULL price to PENNY price the item is. Usually.

I’ve been watching the eight pistol safes that showed up in my work HD clearance rack a month ago. [edit]I just pulled up the pic I took on my phone March 1, $46.0 6, so it was the ‘6’ price and the date of the markdown was 1/4/17 so it should have been halving to $23.03 (I think) soon.[/edit] There were 6 of them left Thursday or Friday last week, I went in today expecting/hoping them to be there with a new price – GONE, all of them. I’m pretty sure DCHOMAK drove down to the Carolinas from Connecticut just to snipe them out from under me!

What determines wether or not they will scan for less than the sticker price? So “6” is the price break just before turning to a penny?

Keep in mind these deals are not supposed to happen.  If everything worked as intended (based on our understanding) none of us would be finding these deals.  That is why there are no real rules that work every time.   Furthermore, each store and region appears to have the ability to override price changes.  So if store X in South Carolina is confident they will eventually sell Product X, they don't have to follow the Corporate price moves.  Makes sense since a product may move better in specific areas.   Home Depot has been making record profits.  They seem to know what they are doing, big picture wise.  So you have to become very observant to figure out what works and what slips  by at your stores.  Dchomak demonstrates over and over, superior observation skills.  He may be fortunate to be near stores that move big margin items and can afford to be sloppy with low margin stuff, but no one here has matched him yet even in his region.

I rarely shop at home depot.

But if you look at the images from the past 2000 posts you will see that the pricing discussed in that forum thread is very accurate.

You just need to wait the right amount of time between the price being changed and getting there before the product is removed.

I think I was the first to report a penny deal here on BLF.  Way before that thread started.  Been doing it a while. There are no hard rules that always work.

EDIT:  The above sounds authoritative.  I should have said, "There are no hard rules that always work as far as I know."

I have made some great purchases, I don’t remember at this point if I have scored any penny deals, but I got a rolling tool cart for $40, about what the CASTERS would cost me. I managed to get several of the Energizer WeatherReady Lanterns for less than $5 (with three AA batteries). I made the mistake of telling the employees what a good deal they were when there were 15 or so left on the shelf, and when back the next day to get more for friends – empty self.

Part of the luck is catching an item that is miss-shelved and no one but you realizes what a deal it will ring up at. It is also about how many other people there are who are watching the deal you are waiting on. (And probably keeping my stupid mouth shut would help as well.) Someone else saw those pistol safes, they got to them before I did. I don’t know if the price had come down or if a new person saw the existing price and jumped on them. At the risk of starting a political discussion, this is capitalism at the most basic level. A reverse auction if you will. I don’t need another (fill in the blank), but if I find one marked at 25% of the original price, I’m going to seriously consider it. Someone else needs that item, and will happily buy it at 50%.

I got several two packs of Milwaukee 11in1 screwdrivers for around $7/pack. I tossed a couple in the work toolbox, gave some to friends and donated another pair to a robotics team that my daughter is on and I mentor. I was not willing to watch them disappear waiting for them to hit a penny cause some other cheap so and so wanted them. Maybe he is on some other forum bragging about scoring my pistol safes and lamenting the missed screwdrivers.

The deals exist. The information linked above is basically what is being posted about here. S’truth!

You are on the right track but not quite. $xx.06 is the first major price cut. Things often have been on sale at a higher price than that, and the ‘regular’ price higher still. After some amount of time sitting at the $xx.06 price, either on the regular shelf or the special clearance shelf, if there are any left, they go to the $xx.03 price, usually half the $xx.06 price. This is usually about 25% of the original price. This SHOULD clear the merchandise. But sometimes things go wrong (from HD’s perspective). Maybe demand for Ice Melt has… dried up. Cool Or maybe the inventory system thinks there is ONE left in the store but nobody can find it. Some customer picked it up and their wife caught them and asked the dreaded question: “What do you need THAT for?!” and they put it down in another isle. Or an employee put an entire box of that item in the wrong place. That is when things drop to a penny. HD marks it to a penny so their non selling inventory numbers are as low as possible while they look for the item. And WE come searching through the store, on the treasure hunt for stuff we may not need but get a cheap thrill out of scoring for a penny.

Don’t ask about the time wasted walking around HD. Don’t take into account the six bucks I paid for two boxes of Gorilla Wire Nuts that I didn’t really need. I got a DEAL!

I’ve been busy moving into a new house. But I did find a nice fireproof safe at the 3 price. Normally they’re over 400$ they have a new model out now. Also those Bosch laser measuring tools are a penny, found one mixed in with new stock GLMX 10 is the model

Found a few items at my local HD at the 3 price and the 2 price nothing too great. Marked down in November, they all scanned for the stickered price.
My local HD seems to be pretty picked over. All those bins of holiday items being marked down are long gone.

There is a nice tool belt that normally sells for about $100 that just hit an .03 price at the Harbison Blvd store in Columbia, SC.  I bought one at $25.03 and left 2 on the shelf.  Sorry for no pics.  It has a thick brown leather and black nylon belt and pockets.  It can carry a ton of stuff and looks like it will last.  Best of luck to any that try to get one.

Can't find it on their website.  It's a Husky 21 pocket belt with a full apron.  Here is one on ebay (link in first pic).  Second pic if found in an google query.

Tools not included. Big Smile

I missed out on this deal.
The triple emitter Defiant, 3C 850 Lumen flashlight went to the 2 price. All stores around here show 0 in stock Crying

Also the 2 pack of WS40 products hit the 2 price! Both of the included items still are sold in HD separately, and total $13
$2.02 is a steal!

So did you wheel the whole display up to the register on a dolly?

Good one.  If it did include all those tools and I put it on, I don't think I would be able to move very far.

You guys think I have it easy. Take a look at this heart break!

So what’s the problem?
Take a look at the reverse side.

Had I been traveling in a far away land, I would have just gone ahead and paid for it. Once I got a receipt I would have asked (demanded) they remove the security tag.
BUT, this was my hometown HD. I don’t want to make enemies, I’m in that store almost every day Innocent

Ha ha!

I actually saw the tag for that deal, but the shelf was empty.
Actually, there are tons of stuff on clearance right now. After the lull we had, there is now a storm of good stuff!
AND, Spring Black Friday is coming up at the end of the week. Stuff is already being put on the floors.
I got a couple of peeks. How about a Ryobi 18V weed wacker, battery and charger for $49.00?
Same for an 18V Ryobi Blower, it also comes with battery and charger, $49.00

If the story on the Bosch GLM10X was a horror story, this next one is a fairy tale.

First a review.

On or around last Black Friday, HD came out once again with their small 10 inch tool bag. Initial price was $4.88, which isn’t bad.j A couple of years ago I caught them on clearance and bought quite a few and used them for Christmas stockings. Just put the gifts inside, zip it up and stick a bow on it. Done! Smile
Well, this year when they came out I kept my eye on them, waiting for the clearance!
When they went to $3.70, I kept waiting………….

Then a few weeks ago I came across this empty shelf. Crying

There, they had dropped down to $2.54, but they were all gone!

That’s why, a couple of days later at another store when I saw this, I struck.

I carried out 8, then came back in for 10 more. When I returned a third time, they were all gone. Just like that!
So I got 18.
They next day I texted 3 friends asking them how many they wanted. The numbers came in, 4 then 10 and finally 4. That totals all 18, none for me!
In the other stores I had been in since, everyone was sold out.
And each time I was in that first store, the one with the empty shelf, I would always see that empty shelf and the sticker for $2.54 Sad

Then, just like in a fairy tale, a couple of days ago while I was in that same store, I saw this :) :) Smile

So, the first thing I did was pull the sticker!

Here’s why.
That replaced sticker meant that this store still had stock If they were all sold out, the MET person would see that and not place the sticker. I removed the sticker because I didn’t want anybody else searching for those bags also.

I did the wise thing, I went over to flooring and asked that guy to check for stock. He looked it up on his scanner and told me there were 16, but they “had no home”
I knew that meant they could be anywhere. I already knew they were not on the floor somewhere so they had to be in an overhead. So things were “looking up”
I finally found some, only 7, in the overhead in plumbing. Smile

So, once I found them, I had the guy from electrical go up and pull them down for me.
Once I paid for them, and got the receipt, I went over to customer service and got refunded the difference on the 18 I bought for my friends.
The 7 I bought.

Refunding the 18 to my card at $2.54 each

Buying the 18 back at $1.32 each

Now that’s an idea………………
Actually I bought 41. One friend took 12, another 10, another 4 leaving me with 15.
I put one set in the basement, 1 in the garage, 1 in the shed, 1 in my van and I spread the rest at some other properties.
Still leaving me a few for emergencies.

Digging the way you worked that dcho.  There is method in your madness.  I would say "to" instead of "in", but that  isn't as fun.

EDIT: I was responding to the going to electrical, then the other unrelated department (flooring), etc. post.  Quite clever.

On top of being Crazy, I’m paranoid too. Big Smile

Here’s heartbreak #2 Crying

How can I bear to go on?
I know, find other penny deals.
Here’s one, 9 mini hanging magnetic lights! (the light sticks on the left are still $1.52, both have the same date)

Here is a peek at some of the stuff coming out this Friday for the “Spring Black Friday” event.

Both tools come with battery and charger. A battery and charger is sold elsewhere in the store for $59.95!

LOL one of the ones I found had a security tag on it. I bought it at the SCO and walked over to another register and had the lady remove the tag for me. She knows who I am, I work in a hospital so I always have scrubs on every morning I go. She uses the hospital I work at and has had really good experiences there, so she has removed several tags for me and has never looked at a receipt.

Can I ask why they might not remove the tag? Couldn’t you show them the receipt to show it was purchased? Sorry for my ignorant questions…

They aren’t supposed to sell penny items, like DCH mentioned I was also in my “home store” I would rather no one know I even know about .1 deals.

Some stores won’t allow you to purchase them either, management gets involved causing a ruckus.

Stopped into HD yesterday and found a great deal. In the isle they had Husky brand Tactical knee pads for $3.83 marked down from $14+
Very interesting because I was in the store Saturday morning and walked down that isle looking to see if they had any of the $4 tool bag with no success. The tool bags are directly opposite of the knee pads and they had 2 boxes of them both with bright yellow stickers. No way I could have missed it. I have yellow sticker radar these days.

One thing I’m noting with my local store is that they sometimes do not send items to the clearance isle and they will literally show up on the floor with a .02 or .03 price out of the blue. My gut tells me that they were up in the overhead and an employee discovered them. I’m going to keep an eye on them because they may not sell out before the next price reduction.

On the other hand my clearance rack has grown stagnant. They really stacked it about a month ago, but nothing is moving, selling, or prices changing.
There are some really old items in there from 2016 that have not even come close to reaching the .02 or .03 price. So i think they are leaving clearance items on the floor because there just isn’t room in the clearance area.

Also picked up a milwaukee 16ft tape measure for $6. Once again in the isle and not the clearance area. I think they have been $6 since xmas. I was hoping it would ring up lower but it did not. It looks like they have not been selling because they have been at that price for a while. Probably the best $6 tape measure you will ever get… but I’d rather it be the best .01 tape measure I ever bought. Still batting .000 though on penny deals.

I managed to score ten of the 10 inch Husky tool bags for $1.32 yesterday. I went to my work store and struck out, but had them check stock. They found 19 at another store 15 minutes away, so I took a chance and scooted on my lunch. Found them in the overhead and had an employee pull them down for me. I’m not sure what I’m going to use these for, but I almost want to go back and get the rest.

I’d post a pic of my receipt, but posting pictures seems to be challenging for me.

Ok. In getting a bit frustrated. I’ve ask a number of times how to do this but to no avail. I am officially the “goof” who rings up the whole store at self checkout without buying a thing. I mean, ive tried everying thing! My store has items dated from last July, august, self… and no discount any different than the orange sticker price.

And what in the world is the 2 price or 6 price or 99 price… idk?! This is nuts. I guess I am done and will quit reading this thread as it just makes me angry! No, I do believe that you are getting deals but I still don’t get it or my store is an exception to the rule?

I feel your pain, since we both shop at the same exact store. I never notice any deals like what’s posted in the thread. I think our store is an exception to the rule.

Good! Don’t give any to your friends.
