Boogie woogie pianist Brendan "Dr. K" Kavanagh usually teams up with amateurs he meets in the London Underground to share a little musical joy. He's proven time and again that you don't have to be an expert to have a good time making music.
Occasionally, however, Dr. K hooks up with a pro, and when it works, you get some real fireworks. That's what happened three weeks ago when Swiss pianist Ladyva dropped by the Underground to deliver this tour de force.
It's funny, the things you notice. Ladyva is beautiful, of course, but did you see how long her fingers are? They're huge! That really helps when you're pounding out the octaves. I've noticed the same thing on many of the world's great pianists (and guitarists).

Ahh, a kindred spirit. Malfunction is easily my second favorite. Hatchworth is an easy one to spot thanks to his facial hair and previous work as a “human” member of the band. The Spine is relatively easy to spot as he stands in front of a whiteboard with the Quintessential album set list on the wall to the right. Rabbit is a bit harder but also winks at the camera just like the Spine and is sitting on a couch with a bright pink rabbit on the right. The mole below her left eye also helps with identification. Some people have even pointed out a couple Walter Workers in there as well. The Spine is a vocal powerhouse whose dynamic range is on par with Roy Orbison IMHO and high praise indeed.

I never knew there were people still making psychedelic blues/doom/jazz music.

"Masters of War" Eddie Vedder · Mike McCready · G.E. Smith Live at Madison Square Garden, New York, NY - October 1992
Eddie Vedder crushes this cover of the Bob Dylan classic.
Eddie is joined by bandmate Mike McCready (guitar) of Pearl Jam and G.E. Smith (mandolin), who cut his chops first with Hall and Oates, and then later at Saturday Night Live.
The sound may be a tiny bit cleaner on the official release, but that one has no video.

Take the chords I, IV, V, and vi, put them in any order, and—voilà!—you've got a good pop song. In this case, the chords are C, F, G, and Am, but the real fun is the appearance of Johnny Depp.
This performance is not that great, in large part because the cell-phone video is shaky, but the Johnny sighting makes it interesting.
Led Zeppelin‘s first album was one of two I bought on a fine summer day in 1969. It was the first time I ever bought an LP with my own money. Listened to it again this week, and the guitar solo from I Can’t Quit You Baby stood out (along with just about everything else!).
“White Bird” by It’s a Beautiful Day
The other album I came home with that day was the first release by It’s a Beautiful Day.
Here’s a small taste.
How about the rest of you? Was your first album a good one?
Gotta love the hair! A couple of them look like wigs, but even if not, they look so overdone that they're camp!
Director John Waters would love 'em.
everybody love the shangs

Bugger, I thought I posted this already, but I guess not. Was floored by her performance.
“Hey, any of you play the piano?”
“Uhh, yeah, me, a little… why?”
[gives masterful performance]

I have my wife to thank for introduction to these characters.
For some reason, I could never get into that song.
Some of my faves, though, are
with some interesting characters (see if you can spot all SPG members without makeup), and
for a demo of the f’n amazing vocal range The Spine has.
