The Daily Riddle Thread

I enjoyed the Daily Joke Thread tremendously (still do), But I know a lot more riddles than jokes. So yeah. Here we go: (and Google is off limits!) Silly
A man is selling oranges on a street corner. His first customer buys half his supply plus half an orange. The next person buys half his remaining supply plus half an orange. The next one also buys half the remaining supply plus half an orange. Finally a fourth person buys half the remaining supply plus half an orange. At this point, the vendor has no oranges left. How many did he start with?

Should I start a separate thread for the answers or what? I don’t want to give them away here, because that would spoil the fun for those who might come late to the game!

My initial thought was 0 because there is always half of something… but they are buying an extra half each time so that doesn’t calculate.

Is a ‘half’ the smallest fraction? If so my guess is 11 or 12.

15

The only way you end up with zero..
.5×-.5=0
x=1

So then work back from there.
(0+.5)*2=1
(1+.5)*2=3
(3+.5)*2=7
(7+.5)*2=15

JaredM and peteybaby nailed it! 15 is correct.

Okay, here’s another one:
The one who makes it doesn’t want it, the one who buys it doesn’t use it, and the one who uses it doesn’t know it. What is it?

I saw this on Kathie Lee and Hoda within the past week, just so you know.

Seven is an odd number. How do you make it even?

This is a classic and kinda mindblowing.

A guy sets off to work. The trip is two miles. The traffic is heavy and he only averages 30mph for the first mile. He then hits open road. What speed must he average for the second half of the trip in order to have averaged 60mph for the total journey?

90 MPH? The question mark stems from the fact that these riddles can be tricky (and “sticky”).

He would have to be Einsteins dream if I figured it right.. 120 seconds for the first mile and in order to make the next mile within 120 seconds. Smile

Ok here’s a riddle:

Not man nor beast met his demise
(To thee I’m sure ‘tis no suprise);
A cruel fate ended it’s trek;
Now thou stand’st ‘neath a great _________

Some may know right off the tops of their heads!

Absolutely correct fellfromtree. Even if he travels the second mile at a billion miles an hour he still cannot average 60mph for the total trip.

Because to average 60mph over two miles you must complete the trip in two minutes. But it took the guy two minutes to do the first mile. So no matter how fast he goes on the second mile the total trip will take longer than two minutes.
