Would you dredge a small pond to obtain 2x lightly used 18v Dewalt battery packs?

Semi-serious, kinda silly question.

So a friend of mine got angry and threw a temper tantrum the other day. This resulted in a destroyed drill and 2 (presumably intact) 18v battery packs all at the bottom of a small pond. The location of said packs is approximated to a 25FT area 4ft deep. Should take maybe an hour to retrieve them.

I'm curious what y'all would do?

:Sp

Magnets. :face_with_monocle:

How much do you want 18v battery tool packs , also:
1-Where are you located ?-Weather factor maybe.
2-What’s the water quality ?—(Do you Know ?)
3-Does the pond have a hard or muddy/silty bottom.
4-Who’s property is the pond on—May need permission.
5-Day or nite retrieval ?
6-Do you have a face mask and snorkle if needed ?
7-Approximate known location of packs in pond ?
8-Snakes, alligators, ticks, mosquitoes, grizzlies, etc. ?
9-Lots of reasons needed known before your expedition.

There are many unknown factors . What do you think ?

There are a bunch of people who go looking for golf balls in ponds. Just get chest waders and a stick. Walk in a grid and move the stick around until you hit something hard. You can feel the general shape of it with a stick. (broom handle or fiberglass tent pole)

It helps to have a net so you don’t have to go in the water.

Alligators and other critters may pose a problem.

Brand? If you do it, they would want to be decent cells, and with not many cycles on them. I have no idea if they would be harmed by the swim they have taken.

Other than trying to get it all out of the pond, because of polluting the water, why bother?

I actually just went out there and waded some of the area. It’s flippin cold. Gave up after the shallowest 50% was searched.

I guess just to have a bunch more cells.

I think attempt #2 will be with the throw net, lol!

Dewalt 18v, apart from that I have no idea. I don’t know if the soak would hurt them or not either. I was curious if it would.

WARNING: LI-ION BATTERY

! WARNING !

Lithium-ion cells and battery packs may get hot, explode or ignite and cause serious injury if exposed to abuse conditions. Be sure to follow the safety warnings listed below:

Do not connect the positive terminal and negative terminal of the battery to each other with any metal object (such as wire).
Do not carry or store battery together with necklaces, hairpins or other metal objects.
Do not pierce the battery with nails, strike the battery with a hammer, step on the battery or otherwise subject it to strong impacts or shocks.
Do not expose battery to water or salt water, or allow the battery to get wet.

No.
Thanks to all the eBay laptop battery pack deals posted recently, I have more cells than I will ever need.

Should pull that stuff up anyway... I imagine it's pretty toxic and bad for the environment. If anything, your friend needs to take responsibility and retrieve the tools/batteries.

Drain the Pond!

Make your idiot friend go in the water to fix his f-up while you supervise from the bank in a lawn chair.

while you supervise from the bank in a lawn chair and sip hot cocoa. :bigsmile:

For your DeWalt 18v Search & Rescue (SAR) Mission,
do you have the proper retrieval equipment ? Such as:
A-Hip or Chest Waders ?
B-SCUBA gear ?
C-Land based assistance if necessary ?—(Rope Throwers)
D-Seeing Eye Frog ?—You said, pond water is murky.
E-Emergency Personnel ?—Sheriffs’ Posse Rescue Team
F-Sonar with Grappling Hook and mini sub with lighting ?
You understand where this is going. Good Luck with the
recovery of the lost, castaway items :wink:

Don’t let the idiot stick his face close to the battery packs when it comes out of the water; have a metal box/trash can handy to drop it in.

Oh, and tell him not to pee and crap in the water while he’s out there.

Because he’s a Flashaholic and Flashaholics sometimes do what might be considered by others as unreasonable. :stuck_out_tongue:

If I’m faced with the same situation, I would like to get it too and it wouldn’t matter whether:

1. I’m sure or not if the cells inside are of good quality or are still functional;
2. Whether or not there are risks like alligators or piranhas or a big bad anaconda lurking under the surface;
3. The property is mine or not and that I might get shot if I attempt to do it without permission;
4. The value of the items I will salvage is negligible compared to the cost I will be incurring;
5. People will mock me while attempting to salvage the items.

If people will ask me why I will do it, my answer would be to satisfy my curiosity or my need to know what brand of cells are inside, whether they are IMR or not, what their capacities are, and how they will compare with my other lithium ions (others would have a lot more reasons than me). If they still ask why then my answer would be because I’m a Flashaholic! :bigsmile:

Depending on what the bottom is like, a yard rake would speed up the location process.
Flip it around backwards to avoid snags and rake over the area.
