I bought mine, in XM-L2 neutral white for US$285 , and now, it’s apparently worth more than US$350. Well, the OP from CPF managed to sell his for US$385 (high CRI XM-L2 version).
This is the first time I have bought a flashlight that has appreciated in [perceived] value!
I honestly have no idea what the big appeal is in that light. Its just a small 3x XM-L2 light with very small reflectors? Sounds like its most stand out feature would be producing a whole lot of heat and having no where for it to go…
I think I will stick with my TN30 and its extra size.
Good on the OP for getting that sort of coin for that light though. If someone is willing to pay for it, why not ask a big figure?
Its a collector light to vinh fans since he only did a small run of them. I used to be a vinh fan but thats not a collector item to me. Actually none of his lights are and I dont buy them any more, he pushes them way to hard now and they cost too much
I purchased two of Vinh’s lights. A BTU Shockervn and the S6330vn. When I got both of his lights, I was disappointed in seeing dust inside the lens and reflector along with damaged anodising. This was even more so on the more expensive S6330vn. Because the ring is difficult to remove, there are a couple of scratch marks around the lip of the head and more than a fair share’s worth of dust inside the lens.
The reasons why I purchased the S6330vn were that:
1. It was a very, very, very difficult light to find in stock
2. The modded light was in NW and brighter than stock
3. It’s a Zebralight. I like their UI
About his lights costing too much, I agree with how he has priced his lights now. Especially when it comes to the budget lights he mods like the Eagle Eye X6 and Jax Z1. At a minimum, they’re priced US$100 and US$120 respectively. Surprisingly enough, they still end up being sold at that price! Before though, when I bought the Shocker and S6330, I did run the numbers (with the Shocker) to see how much it’d cost me if I were to mod it myself. It turned out, for me, the asking price was about as much as I would spend myself and that includes the time spent in making it focused properly, which, from what I read, was a PITA.
edit: not knocking the CPF OP at all. I was surprised myself to find people are willing to purchase the light at that price.
Vinh was able to sell the last two for $425 (check his daily deals thread), and my sale price was actually quite a bit lower than $385, and less then my price was for the original S6330, and the mod. As I mentioned in the post I'm open to offers. I took a $25 loss on that sale, and don't see myself lowering prices in that post much more. FYI the same FS is up on here ;)
For the most part, flashlights and lasers definitely do not appreciate in value :(
Only exception to this rule seems to be with surefire "experimental" "limited release" or whatever lights that people have no trouble plunking down thousands for, for imo, far inferior performance.
Edit: I'm keeping my second (and last) S6330... I don't expect it will appreciate in value much, but I also doubt it will drop to under $300 anytime soon. UI is hard to beat.
I have a few V54 lights, there are lights that he sells for around the MSRP pricing of the stock lights, those are the ones that I picked up(e.g. Olight SR52), lights like the Jax Z1 or eagleye X6T I would not touch…
(I’ll be interested to see what he actually sells one for… the most I’ve ever see was in the low $400s. And if anyone is reading this and thinking that $800 is a fair deal, they should definitely get in touch with me.)
I actually do use my lights rather than keep them in storage and this evening, I accidentally knocked it over whilst it was tailstanding on the concrete floor. The outcome was a little knick to it. No biggie.
However, I was also cleaning the car at the time (yeah, I know, weird time to do it…) and I did get the light wet. I was disappointed to find that, the Vinh modded S6330 is no longer waterproof. There was signs of fogging and very, very, very small formation of droplets on the lens inside. Bugger.
So I guess I won’t be getting a bazillion Zimbabwe dollars for my one, huh?
I put a secret bid on one of the 3 lights he has up to start my fame and fortune collection. I cant tell you which one as I dont want everyone bidding on it.
Good luck to him. If he sells them it shows someone wanted them.
Hello Rod! I’m the guy who bought the light. However, I bought it for a lot less than the $385 asking price. Thanks again Gennady for the deal. Looking forward to doing business with you again sometime. My light is waterproof, with no dust under the lens :). Rod, you should send yours back to Vinh. Everyone says, Vinh stands behind his work. I see Rod that you’re #1 on the WW X6 group-buy list. That 7c tint is the same as my Zebra. Your gonna love the tint Rod, even though the output will be 1/3 what my Zebra is. I find it hilarious that an obscure deal over on CPF is talked about over here, which it turns out to be a bunch of BLFer’s involved anyways! Seriously though, do I think I got a good deal? Well I ain’t selling it!
Vinh's come a very long way in his modding abilities and process. Where in the past it was more of a hobby that made him some money, now it's a commercial process that also happens to be his hobby.
I talked with him about the dust issue in lenses a very long while back, and apparently was not the first to bring it up. About a month later he installed air filters in his shop, and if you can find the photos of his work area you'll see he has two pipes to suck up fumes & particles.
If there is an issue with your VN light I high suggest getting in touch with him.
@Ray-o-light - I'm really glad you like it :D I used a little silicone grease on the threads iirc, but aside from that it's just like I got it from Vinh. The tint is really something. That light was also my first time seeing it.
I still have 15 lights up for sale, if you're interested in anything let me know.
