9 volt rechargeable Battery

I need a couple of rechargeable 9 volt batteries for a stun gun. It is designed for NiMh batteries. I see EBL brand on ebay, but never heard of the brand.
Anyone know anything about them, and would you recommend Tenergy instead?

I note that the EBL is Li-ion so I guess Tenergy is the way to go. The item was designed for NIMH batteries, and I don’t know if Li-ion will work. I would still like to know about the EBL.

Thanks,
Jerry

I imagine that a stun gun needs to be able to discharge its battery very quickly, a 9v li-ion is likely just two li-ion cells in series, and won’t be able to discharge as fast as a NiMH 9v would be able to.

Thanks. I admit I am over my head on this.

iirc ebl is in with the “whateverfire” category .
look to the tenergy or even the energizer.the latter hasserved me well.

I liked my AAA EBLs but a couple suddenly died after little usage and someone here said that is a trait of them.

In other words they seemed pretty good at some levels, but aren’t so good.

Thanks, Guys,
I am going to stick with some good standard brands. I only need one and a spare.

Depending on how high the drain on what you need the battery for you might want to think about something like this http://www.digitalequilibrium.com/docs/9v_capacitor_battery.pdf

Two Li-Ion is definitely NOT the way to go for a 9V battery. Remember that two Li-Ion batteries in series will give you only 8.4V, and only unloaded and freshly charged. It will give you 7.4V nominal, and maybe 6.5-7V fully discharged. Not good. MUCH better would be to go NiMH. A typical 7 cell NiMH battery will give you around 8.75V nominal, which is better than you are likely to get from 9V alkaline batteries. As far as brands, from my experience, Tenergy is a good brand. Because 9V batteries are by definition low draw batteries, you are FAR better off getting the LSD Centuras rather than the non-LSD Premiums.

Hi Serifus,
The instructions say that only rechargeable NMH will work. I have had the unit maybe 20 years. I actually bought it when some said it would help if bitten by a rattle snake. I never had any reason to test it, thank the Lord. I had 2 batteries (only 1 needed) and they have both gone bad. I don’t think I am capable of doing as you suggest, and will use commercial NIMH

Thanks, I think the Tenergy is the way to go. I did not clarify that the unit only takes one battery. I want two for a spare.

Sorry for the confusion, and many thanks.

Best,
Jerry

sounds like a waste of money to buy batteries for that reason.
stun gun for a rattlesnake bite???
some sort of old wives tale.stunguns are questionable for defense anyway.so its more of a useless toy.
20 years ago the 9v were 100mah nicads not nimh.they are now 175mah in nimh.some CLAIM more.
anything on ebay is suspect at best.energizer, rayovac, tenergy from a reputable u.s seller is what i use.

I agree. I cannot hear the rattle, and hunting I thought I would have one anyway. The things I read in outdoor magazines might or might not be true.

But I helped a friend teach a concealed handgun license class a few years ago, and one of the students was a nurse. She had once had a job in a hospital where her shift ended at midnight. She did not know that a man had been stalking her, and one night she was walking in the parking lot, and he jumped her from behind, put a knife to her throat, and told her he was going to rape and kill her. She had a stun gun in her hand, and was able to twist enough to put against his body. He immediately went down and she kept hitting him with it until security got there. In that case it saved her life.

I don’t have any use for it, but if is around it should be operational so the batteries.

I can afford that amount of waste. I use eBay a lot for various items, and 99.8% of the time my experience has been good. I guess each of us decides what and why we we buy or do things; maybe like buying so many flashlights.

There is a thread here somewhere about a soshine rechargeable 9V battery with lithium battery and electronic inside…

Found it

Thanks Werner. I think I will stick with NiMh.
I have never used the Soshine batteries. Have you, and do you like them?
Thanks,
Jerry

The way to use it in case of snake bite is to unzip you pants and apply it to your nads until the battery goes dead. The pain helps to take your mind off the snake bite. J)

Never used them because I only have 9V batts in measurement devices and smokedetectors. I don’t want to use them in such devices and it is not necessary because smokedetectors work 10years with a lithium primary and after that the whole device is garbage anyway. DMM seems to last also very long if you don’t forget to switch it of.

I maybe have needed 5batts in the last 3 years.

But I have kept that in mind if I once have need for a higher power rechargeable 9V battery.

I have a bunch of powerex cell’s but cant use them cause I have no way to charge them. Did the stungun come with a charger? I’d like to start using the one’s I have but till I get a hobby charger I have no other way to charge them, I have a 9v dumb charger but its not worth it to use a dumb charger on them, they’re not easy to get a hold of.

These are rated at 230mAh, “true 9.6v”.

Hi Cereal_killer,
No but I have an old Eveready Charger. I just looked at it and it is a Ni Cad charger. :_( That is a bummer, and I might not be able to charge the batteries when they get here. The unit used Nicad batteries.
I don’t think I have anything to charge them with.

Jerry

OK color me dumb.
In my stun gun that uses 9 V NICAD’s could a 9 v NIMH be used? Pretty sure it could not.

Thanks,
Jerry

Possibly not. Back in the day, 9V Nicads had six cells. This made them 7.2V nominal batteries. But most NiMH 9V batteries use seven cells for 8.4V nominal. Some even have 8 cells for 9.6V nominal. So a NiMH 9V could have too high a voltage for a device designed specifically around a Nicad 9V. However, a seven cell NiMH 9V will be fine for anything designed around an alkaline 9V.

Thanks,Matt.
I found some 9 V NiCad’s on the web. There is also a battery store here in town. I’ll visit them tomorrow. The item is something I never use, and I don’t want to spend much on it. I don’t have a 9V NiMH charger so it might go into recycle.
Thanks for the help.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Jerry
