In order to mod this light, I did the following. all tests were done on the unmodified light.

I measured the temperature of the emitter with a IR gun with the following results.

With the emitter removed and in free air at .5 amps and 3.1 volts it stabilized at 85.4 degrees C.

With the emitter mounted in the hollow pill in free air at .5 amps and 3.1 volts it stabilized at 74.8 degrees C.

With the emitter mounted in the hollow pill and that mounted in the battery tube in free air at .5 amps and 3.1 volts it stabilized at 60.2 degrees C.

Adding the zoom head with out lens in free air at .5 amps and 3.1 volts it stabilized at 64.4 degrees C.

Adding the lens the IR meter did not give a correct reading.(45 degree C.)

The Q5 is ratted 150 degrees C. maximum so I used only .5 amps so as not to destroy the emitter in free air.

Pushing the emitter to the same temperature as it was in free air.
With the emitter mounted in the hollow pill and that mounted in the battery tube in free air at .8 amps and 3.3 volts it stabilized at 85.4 degrees C.

Pushing the emitter to the maximum temperature with the emitter mounted in the hollow pill and that mounted in the battery tube in free air at 1 amp and 3.5 volts it stabilized at 101.5 degrees C.

In conclusion, if you want to push this light above 1 amp, you need to use a solid pill, and limit the time it is on high.

I hope this information will be of some use to someone.

Were all these measurements taken on a DTP board or with a non-DTP factory MCPCB?

At lower current (under 3A or so) the hollow pill isnt really much of an issue if you’re using a DTP board, the BIGGEST issue with almost any stock light is the di-electric layer under the thermal pad of the LED, get rid of this (by using a DTP board) and you really allow the LED to be properly driven, even with a hollow pill.

Oh and welcome to BLF, say bye-bye to your money!

From the Ebay listing: 1200 lumens. From an XPE. … The farce is strong in this one. :stuck_out_tongue:

That said, at only 99c, this is a great price for a cheap, relatively small mod host.

I’m not surprised that it came with a hollow pill and doesn’t have enough mass to heatsink at full power. But this sounds easily fixable. Just get a driver with turbo-timer from RMM. And fix the hollow-pill by adding a solid heatsink.

If you want a host that can run at higher currents for extended periods of time you’re going to need something larger and more solid. Perhaps that Cofly from DX. It’s supposed to be very well built.

The original emitter mounted on its alum. piece was used. I just soldered long wires, about 12 inches long
on and connected them to a lab power supply.

I have a lathe, and have made solid pills before, so that is what I will do for this one.
