Why CAN'T a Jetbeam RRT2 be modded? Seriously I need to know why.

Hi all,

Been tearing into a new one latley and hoping someone has a bit of insight on this.

I did a very simple mod to this light and it does NOT work. Took the Jetbeam RRT2 550 lumen XML2 and desoldered the emitter leads and replaced it with a neutral. The result is NO light.

I tried this on 2 of them and the result is the same.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the custom MCPCB that came with it has some magic component imbedded in the board?

The really odd thing is I also can NOT remove the old emitter from the board. I got it plenty hot to wet solder or break loose any epoxy in the skillet, and yet I cant free it.

Here is a pic of the factory board.

I tested the emitter I was trying to put in and it did work, I put the factory one back in and the light works fine too.

Any ideas?

That star looks exactly the same as the star that came in my RRT-01 and TCR-01.

Despite its funny shape, it’s basically just a standard star. Any 16mm star (including a Noctigon) should work just fine.

Some things you should try:

  • Verify that your new star/LED is good. Using a battery carrier with jumper wires on each end, test your replacement star to verify that the LED works outside the light and that it is properly soldered to its star.
  • After installing the new LED/star verify that it works BEFORE you reinstall the reflector.
  • Make sure the reflector isn’t shorting against the new star.
