Hi Rey, in TreviLux's review of the copper Tool preview sample, he found that the new no-pwm driver is not very efficient. It being a preview sample that Lumintop wanted response for, I assume that they may improve the efficiency of the driver before final release of the new copper Tool. How is that for the driver on this group buy light?

I’m hoping for an update too but I’m doubtful. The driver in use is likely what’s being shipped with the standard aluminum versions. It’s likely Lumintop already has a bunch of these drivers produced to use. Considering the little customization allowed from Lumintop on this GB, I have doubts they would be willing to redesign a new driver. All of this is speculation though, I hope they update the driver.

Hi djozz,

Is it the review by UPz?   I read that and have reported it to Lumintop, they are looking into it.

He said
“the light always turns on in the Med mode, regardless of whatever last mode was used.”

That is not the Rey Light Driver, if it starts on Medium, but has no PWM, it is the new stock Tool driver. The ReyLight Drivers should be LMH and the low should be 1% instead of 5% as listed by Lumintop

and
“the Lumintop Tool AAA Copper not particularly outstanding, even for maximum output nor efficiency.”

I see no unusual deficiency of max output (-23%) given the even larger increase in CRI of the N219 (+30%)

less bright is normal for higher CRI and lower Kelvin:
stock CU Tool XPG2 nominal 6000k 70CRI, 110 lumens on high
the BLF N219b Tool nominal 4500K (25% drop), 91CRI (30% increase), 85 lumens on high (23% drop)

I would not call a 30% increase in CRI inefficient, I would call it fantastic!
bottom line:
its normal for a single AAA N219 to deliver ~80 lumens

So yes, I do think the review was not of the LMH driver that Rey Light has negotiated, so also yes, I do hope the discharge curve regulation is more like the Maratac (Although I suspect he was testing one of the Maratacs with PWM), and less like the Thrunite Titanium (which does not have PWM)

question, is it possible that No PWM circuits dont have as flat a runtime curve as PWM drivers? iow, is PWM more “efficient” as far as runtime curve consistency?

Yes, but that one is MLH (#2 on the following model list), not LMH like this threads Group Buy (#3 on this model list):

Sorting out the Lumintops

  1. Copper tool with XPG2 from FStop Lights for $42 shipped. Some of those are still on ebay, had PWM and did not have the ringed reflector. These were not offered in N219, only XPG2, modes were MLH, with a 5 lumen low.
  1. There is a new run of Copper Tool with ringed reflector and N219 on Amazon, no PWM but still MLH (20%, 5%, 100%) mode sequence with 3 lumen low, cost with a discount code (MARTIN20) is $50. Also available from gearbest.com for $59

(note the photos being used for these ads does NOT show the ringed reflector, they show the older model with PWM, contact the vendor to verify if their photo is out of date and the lights are actually No PWM models)

  1. The BLF group buy is supposed to get a LMH (1% 20% 100%) mode sequence with N219 and ringed reflector, which indicates No PWM. Low should be 1 lumen (not 3 lumen as in #2). For Cost and ordering read page 1 of this thread.

I am well familiar with the Groupbuy specs, already paid for one.
Just good to see the final Manufacturer pictures, what the real specs are when received remains to be seen on the ones available thru Gearbest and others.
I have the latest version of the regular black Tool without PWM and am very impressed with it, so this should be even better.
Thanks,
Keith

I did not want people seeing Tools on Amazon and Gearbest to think they were the same as the
Group buy. Im glad you understand.

I agree, what we actually get will only be known once in hand, or someone posts correct actual pictures of the reflector.

Muto wrote:

Cool. Can you confirm it has the ring around the LED? Pictures always welcome.

fwiw Lumintop site has pictures also. They are not correct for the NoPWM driver, lacking the ring around the LED. Also, they show the same N219 image for the XPG2 version.
And the Features tab says
“High-efficiency digitally regulated circuit to maintain a constant brightness as battery life diminishes”
That means PWM. It is the same text as on the FStoplights.com site, that I bought a CU Tool from, with XPG2 and PWM. I posted pictures of the PWM Tool reflector next to the new reflector on my no PWM Maratac, .

Bottom line is there are at least 3 different drivers in use for the Tool. Two are MLH, of which one is No PWM. Only the group buy is LMH, and it is No PWM

Will the GB light have a ringed reflector? Will it have the Lumintop logo as shown in the Gearbest photos? If so, the GB light will look exactly like the Gearbest photos but with different driver.
Thanks.

What's the "ringed" for?  orange peal reflector?

GB will be the same with factory default except the driver.

on left is the Tool with PWM. On right is a new Maratac, which has No PWM, and the ring around the reflector. Other Lumintop tools are appearing, with No PWM and the ring around the LED, in the reflector.

Im glad we are able to get Maratacs and Tools with No PWM now

So, I guess back to the question: Does the light from this GB come with the centering ring?

Yes,
the centering ring coincides with the new No PWM circuit being used in the latest release by Lumintop of both Tools and Maratacs.

The GB Tool will have a No PWM circuit, and will have the centering ring. The driver will be different, but the copper body will look the same as earlier Tools that came without the centering ring, and used PWM.

The new Lumintops do NOT use PWM and yes they have the centering ring in the reflector..

I hope that is more clear.. fwiw, these are my opinions, based on my experience and research. I am not officially involved in the design of Lumintop Tools, I just buy them, test for PWM, and report my observations.

imo the Group Buy Lumintop Tool is the ONE to get, IF you value No PWM, High CRI, and a low of 1 Lumen.

if otoh, you are into Max brightness, then dont buy an N219 light. In fact, buy a Maratac, they are brighter than the Tool (if you are OK without the clickie). Or get Vinhs custom Tool that uses LiIon

and btw, do NOT use LiIon in any version of the Tool, nor in the Maratacs. (Except the ones with a driver Swap that Vinh sells.)

Hope that helps clear up the various versions and options

I personally am very excited by the Group Buy Tool features and have ordered more than one. I expect the Tool head will Lego to my Copper Maratac, and vice versa too.

Thanks to jon slider for all the posted info.
I didn’t think of the Lego with my new Maratac copper. Will try it.
Thanks.

Didn’t know what you meant about ring, thought at first you meant glow in the dark ring.
But anyway, my black Tool received 3 weeks ago from Gearbest has no PWM and No Ring around the LED.
Just tried it shining against a large computer fan and there is no difference from hi-med-low.
My Tank007 E09 by comparison shows the blades on med. and low.
My Tool unit still starts on Med. like the older models.

In for at least 5 possibly 10 if not too expensive. I have a bunch of Tools and Worms to retrofit. Hopefully that is not asking too much.

2015-12-1

Some news good, some bad:  1. Group buy goes on, 2. Driver availabe, 3. Shippment delayed.

The time line is a little too tight, the production is not going very well. Orders can't be shipped in the 1st or 2nd week as we planned.

In this case, I asked them to make a new batch of bodies, with custom logo, and some extra drivers available.

Estimated shippment will be in the 3rd or 4th week of December.

Driver is 6$/pc, limited to 50pcs only, it's now only available for the people who are already in the group buy. You can find my paypal in the earlier PM.

Sorry for the info missing,  the driver is 50pcs in total, and 5pcs limited to each person. The late bird might not get it. Sorry about this.
