Question about a new battery pack from FastTech

I bought one of these, an 8 cell battery pack for one of the magicshines I use on my bicycle. This light has the 4 color power indicator on the back, and that indicated 50-75% power left (blue) when I plugged it in. I used it for about 20 minutes to ride home Wednesday night, and then to ride to my girlfriends house on Saturday after noon. It was blue when I left and had drained down to yellow (50-30%) when I got over there about a half hour later. When I went to ride home last night the indicator light wasn’t displaying any color, and the light didn’t work. I plugged it in to the charger and noticed the batterypack was taking a charge, and verified the power indicator still worked. The charger got pretty warm and had turned off when I checked on it again after about 4 hours. The power indicator turned green when I plugged the light in and the light worked like it’s supposed to then. Which leads to 3 questions;

  1. Why did the batterypack not work when I went to ride home Sunday?
  2. Is the batterypack likely to be defective?
  3. Did I harm the batterypack by doing any of the above?

1. Protection circuit tripped on overdischarge protection and also the cells in series might be unbalanced

2. No, but it is very likely low capacity pack (about half of declared I would suspect. Tearing down would show what cells are inside. Based on price there are low quality ones. If they are pink colored without marks the cells are very likely about 1000mAh each under 1A load)

3. No.
