Just what the title says. This was the KD XP-L HI 5-mode drop-in. I pop in a protected cell of any type and get all five modes back.
Any particular reason why?

For me, I had a three-mode 3.04A qlite driver with a unprotected NCR18650BD in a L2T. I notice the unprotected battery seems to be too short and did not have enough pressure on it from the spring. So I solder another spring on to the spring on the driver side.
This somehow solved the one-mode problem for me. I have no idea why this will give one-mode.
Yeah, good call. It is a Sanyo 2400 mAh with no button-top, so that actually makes sense. Thanks.
Try measuring your cells, if the protected one is signifigantly longer, it’s probably pressing harder on the contacts and making connection. A shorter unprotected cell doesn’t push it far enough.
Just my 2¢
The solder joint, spring to the driver had a small crack. The break was difficult to see. Re-soldering cured the problem.
