NEW Fenix zoomy FD40 (PIC HEAVY)

Hey guys,

Just wanted to share some images of the latest zoomy, the Fenix FD 40. So far I’m liking it very much!
I took some pictures with it next to some popular models for reference. It seems the big names are finally answering the calls for zoomies.
I’m sure other more capable members will offer a more in depth review, I just wanted to share a few pics to wet your appetite. Smile

Thanks for the pictures! It’s interesting how they opted for an XPL HI… And it looks small compared to the Z1

Pretty cool little light, i am very impressed by it. It is very floody but is deceivingly bright compared to the others, even though i didn’t feel that way when i was messing with it by itself.

The Price isn’t too bad either, i bought it straight from Fenix and they were running a special with 25% off with free shipping.

I have other Fenix lights and appreciate their quality. On their website, it didn’t clearly show that the zoom was progressive, i had the impression that it was only 2 settings, flood and narrow. It was

a pleasant surprise when i got the light and the zoom turned out to be progressive (variable).

It is my humble opinion that as a small package, it is the best zoomy in my collection. Highly recommended!

I just Did a quick test, it doesn’t get hot at all… the zeusray got very hot to the touch while the Fenix was much cooler after a 20 min run.

Is that a Fresnel-like combination of total internal reflection and a converging lens, like an LED Lenser?

Flashlight designers should look at lighthouses and pottery.

It has the biggest spot and probably puts out the most light while focused. But it doesn’t mean it’s most intensive and more throwy.

I have a question to ontheR6 – how’s beam quality in medium focus?

Some of the Lensers and Coasts do have problems with the beam at medium focus.
I will be interested for myself only if they appear at a much lower price; like the Lensers do, probably stock intended for more price sensitive markets and old models. What is interesting is that another company is using lighthouse-like optics.
I am not enthusiastic about the appearance of any of those for lights.

It is very bright, i don’t have a way to measure but it does seem to be the brightest to the naked eye also.

Unfortunately I haven’t looked at the beam in that much detail, as soon as I get a chance I will and try to take a couple of pictures.

Good Day,  Smile

I'll just quote Vihn's email on the Fenix FD40:  Wink

Hi Guys!

I had really high hope for the Fenix FD40 but it turn out a disappointment to me. Light is just not bright enough to wow me. I also do not like the ring around the hot spot when zoom to throw. Intermediate levels are also useless. Only full flood or Throw is usable. I am just going to clearance out the 3 FD40 samples I have for anyone that wants it. It's not a bad light at all its just now a WOW light for me.

I have 2 stock FD40 and 1 FD40vn modded XPG2 S4 Dedome + driver boost. You can buy them here:

Is there a high end zoomy he’s comparing too? I’d love to see what else is out there in the zoomy world. Please share if you have that info.
Thanks.

It’s quite difficult to “wow” Vinh and FD40 was never meant to do that. I’m waiting for selfbuilt’s review.
