*Olive* S6/Xiaozhi mod - 219c + lighted tailcap + failure

Most people now know this host as the Convoy S6, but I hesitate to call it that because it didn’t come from Simon/Convoy.

This is a pretty unique host so I wanted to “honor” it by doing something special with it. I knew the instant I saw it that I would install an amber lighted tailcap (my current fav color), but I wanted to do something more. I decided to try mixing white and red led’s, sort of like I did with my S8. The S8 puts out a lot of light with its dual XP-L’s, but because of the small optics it was always lacking in throw. I decided to try to remedy that with this light. My solution was to keep the standard reflector set-up, but also fit some red SMD led’s inside the reflector.

I took a sheet of thin copper that I had from a seller on Etsy, and super-glued an old XP-E right in the middle of it. Then I used a hobby razor to carefully cut the emitter out, and add some narrow slits on the sides. Then, with some solder paste and butane torch, I soldered the little 0805 led’s on.

I then cut the copper some more until everything matched up. The Led+ is shared between red guys and the main led (a beautiful 4000k Nichia 219c which I adore, even more than the 5000k version). The Led- is separate from the main led. I added some power, and it works! Even better, it actually fits in a standard XM-L2 reflector opening! I knew the beam from the reds would be ugly, but I wasn’t exactly expecting the “Eye of Sauron” :Sp

I threw some DC fix on the lens and it cleaned it up beautifully to a nice even flood. However, once I got it all put in the host, I realized the red light wasn’t nearly bright enough. So I pulled it all back out and changed the firmware to up the current to the red led’s. Reassembled everything, hit the switch, and…. nothing. Flat Stare That’s never a good sign. I took the pill out and immediately I could see that I had completely fried the red led’s. :_(

Oh well. If they couldn’t handle the current needed to be bright enough, there wasn’t any point trying that exact idea again. Plus, I was very tired of soldering that tiny stuff Silly So I scrapped the red idea. The light may not be as “flashy” without the red feature, but it is definitely very functional. With the Olive color, 4000k 219c, 4.5amp driver, amber lighted tailcap, and black clip (standard clip coated w/ plastidip), I’d say it’s still very unique as well.

To finish it out, here is a pic of the tail, and one that shows the correct color of the anodizing on this light.

Nice project, and great fiddling with copper sheet! And a pity that the red leds were not bright enough, I kind of like that eye-beam Smile

Very nice shame the RED didn’t work! I’m looking for a good source of xq-e reds that will fit the same as your 0805. We can rework the firmware then Smile
But still a nice light

Djozz: if you like the red eye that much, feel free to reproduce it Smile

Pyro: I’m satisfied with how it turned out, but that sounds promising. I didn’t realize XQ’s were that small

Cool attempt for red+219C configuration, I am huge fan of such combo. Soldering small parts requires a lot of patient, which I seriously lacking off now. Your mod also reminds me of tterev3's crazy RGBUV SC02 Tongue Out

Nitecore's twin emitters design is preferred layout for optimum beam profile and brightness.

Can I trade more lights with your pre-assembled tailcap LED in future?

Just as an FYI the Cree “photo red” aka 660nm leds are more robust and have a higher vf then the regular 615-360nm reds.

Is there a way to wire them in series and then (both) in parallel with the main led?

Or maybe that is just crazy?

Just normal anodization. They’re not readily available right now, but maybe if there is enough interest the powers that be might pick it up.

Maybe that is not going to happen. Their supply has depleted quite a bit over the weeks. Previous gun metal grey has already sold out.

I’ve actually destroyed 3 or 4 S2 reflectors trying to drill a hole to do that very thing. I might have to take another stab at it some time, as I agree that is probably the best solution.

There are plenty of ways to get extra red modes it. It’s just about having the right firmware and driver for it, with the correct implementation. It’s actually very difficult.

@pilotdog68
You can see the xq-e leds here

Yeah normally I’m more upset when something that took so much tedious work fails, but the light ended up being so nice anyways.

Yes. I tried a tough, baked-on enamel, but it just cracked and flaked off when I screwed it down. So I ended up going with plastidip, a sort of latex-y rubberized paint.

Any links for the AA version?

Yup, got one of those, the silver was the interest… The other thing is that these are usually made by a 3rd party and sometimes you can find alternate Anodizing colors by finding other links… Like the pic FreeMe had posted. Or the OP of this “S6” in Olive…

I think the AA version of this is one of the most stout bodies for AA that I have seen, the only one I can run a FET driven Nichia 219C in without having it become too hot to hold in 10 seconds or less. A thick body tube really helps act as a heatsink, much needed being 14500 only now with the FET.

I am going to get one of these Olive bodies too, but was really hoping to find if the AA version has other anodizing colors as well…

Sweet mod PD68.  Really like how you rigged the reds, even though they were not included in the final implementation.

Seems like we could design some OSH Park PCB's that have thermal pad thru-holes sized for a specific gauge copper wire.
