Review: Sunwayman P02A, 2 x AAA Penlight

Two weeks ago, I received a neat looking penlight from Gearbest, a Sunwayman P02A penlight for review. Lucky for me, there was a family camping trip last weekend so I carried this flashlight to see how it performs on outdoor area.

As preambule, here’s the specs taken from GB website:

Sunwayman P02A is a nice and neat-looking penlight, lightweight and easy to carry and powered by two easily available AAA batteries. The body is made from aerospace grade aluminum with HAII type III.

I’m no expert on metal, but that’s what they say. But I can feel the sturdy construction and I think it can be used as kubotan/kubaton for those who expertise in martial art.

There’s a clip attached so I can carry this penlight in my pocket just like I carry a normal pen. The clip and switch button is made from metal, I guess it’s stainless steel.

The switch is reverse click. One click to turn on the light into high mode, and a half click to switch modes to low. Another half click to get back to high mode, and so fort.

Utilized by a CREE XQ-E R2 and orange peel reflector, this flashlight provide a balance of throw and flood beam pattern. There’s two mode available, 12 lumens on low and 168 lumens on high. A nice brightness mode spacing. I just wishing that they also have neutral white tint

You may notice that there’s a residue (like a black hair) in the head part but it doesn’t affect the beam performance. I will open the head this weekend and see if I can remove that stuff.

Now, the hand-on experience.

The size of this penlight is just perfect, I put it inside my pocket where I usually keep my pen in it.

This penlight was useful for camping light and it gives pretty good runtime. I didn’t have a chance to measure the exact runtime because that was a rainy night and I found some leakage on my tent!

So I used my other flashlights along with this penlight (and other efforts) during the night to keep my family dry and safe.

CONCLUSIONS:

Pros:

  • Lightweight, easy to carry, concealable.
  • Using AAA batteries, available almost everywhere.
  • Enough lumens for everyday carry and basic tasks.
  • Can be used as kubaton/kubotan, if you’re trained.

Cons:

  • Spec said it has memory, but I don’t think it has memory. Alway turned on high brightness level.
  • Accidental turned on is very likely, always check or lock it out by loosing the head part.

Thanks for reading, I hope this review may help you find suitable penlight for your own purpose. As a bonus, here’s my camping yard, at the slope of Merbabu mountain.

nice campsite. Any bears around?

Thanksfully not, just some birds and squirrels.

Nice review  cool to see another review of the P02A, as i did one recently for Gearbest of the same light.

Thanks DBSAR

The word squirrel remind me of someone :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for review; very elegant penlight, tiny and powerful with 168 Lm, well spaced modes. I would like more anodized colors like blue, red, etc.

I like that picture, nice!

Nice review! thanks.

I really not happy with this penlight;

- Not memory, always turn on in high

- Problems with the switch (I had to adjust the part that holds the switch to turn on the flashlight)

- For change the mode, the click must be very slight and fast…

  • The Oring is always out of his thread…
    Not my best penlight.

Update: both my P02A lights have now failed. ( my first one arrived with a dead switch, and the second replacement one they sent me have failed with very little use. Also Sunwayman ignored all my emails to fix this problem. I have updated my review here with the switch fault and glued tail cap problem: >> REVIEW: - Sunwayman P02A penlight EDITED/IMPORTANT UPDATE -11/15/2015

I have read that, that’s bad.
I want to open the switch, but it seems hard (just like I see on your post).

Sunwayman have completely IGNORED my attempts to contact them. ( sent several emails, etc.) with ZERO response. I have red-flagged Sunwayman as a manufacturer to completely avoid due to poor reliability, poor products, and ZERO customer support and service.

It doesn’t seem like the best penlight in the market and considering the problems you may have being a Sunwayman I think I’ll pass. Thanks for the great review, nice pics the campsite looks awesome.

UPDATE:

Last night, I found that the penlight is dead. I thought it was the battery but it wasn’t.
I disassemble the head easily and found that the LED’s dome is very soft. With a little force, the dome fell off from its base.

LED is damaged, tested with multitester.
Any idea what is the best replacement LED for this one?

did you check the switch first to see if that failed like both of the brand new P02A lights i had? looks like these P02A lights are really bad quality.

Yes, I tried to by-pass the switch first but nothing happened.
It’s pity to see a dead flashlight after being used for a very short period of time.

both mine are toast. One was a DOA and the other failed just days after. ( as i mentioned before in another topic all four of my Sunwayman lights died. My opinion is Sunwayman lights are absolute crap.
