After paying $35 for two Orbtronic 3400mAh 18650 protected Panasonic’s and reviewing some of the posts in these forums, I am spooked about “knock-offs”. How can you tell that you are dealing with a fake anyway before you buy it?

There are US based retailers, however the cells will obviously cost more. For the extra money you get peace of mind knowing you bought legitimate product.
I haven’t bought battries from overseas mainy for that reason.
Also there has been a lot to read about Gearbest shipping issues on this forum.
