Wtb a skyray pop can light.

I want to buy one of these pop can lights. My brother owns one and it is modded to produce a respectable amount of light. I like these lights because they are known for their reliability. I won’t use mine all the time but when I do i need to work. I have seen a few websites on here that I could buy them from but they aren’t modded and some members on here have already said they dont put out enough light. Unless someone has a step by step quite on how to mod the light I’m a total novice and just need pointed in the right direction. Any and all help / advice Is greatly appreciated.

It is not a SRK but you may want to look at this:

My only hesitation about SRK's is that many are now manufactured cheaply. Wish I would have bought one a couple years ago :(

Whatever you do please don’t buy a 20$ SRK on ebay - I did that with a 7xXML-T6 and it has blue light! quality is alright but the components are garbage.

Which isn’t directly surprising for that price

But he is right. Most of the King-Size lights are just usable as hosts for modders. Especially today. A few years ago, these lights were useable - but today the quantity of the LEDs get more and the cooling gets less.

I would buy the light from MountainElectronics

Personally I think there a couple of options.

The best option is to save a bit and get one of these:
http://intl-outdoor.com/noctigon-418650-meteor-m43-p-864.html

No need to mod it at all and it’s far superior in everyway to any of the other SRK like lights out there. In fact, superior to almost any ‘soda can’ light, regardless of price.

If you don’t fancy that. Then the I say go for a JM35 instead:

With the shallow largish reflector and the MT-G2 you’ll have similar output and a similar beam profile to most of the multi emitter XM-L2 SkyRay Kings. But much better tint and a physically smaller light.

Runtime on the single 26650 is ok too and if you want longer runtime, then there is the 2x26650 option as well:

I don’t mind the SRK’s and they certainly offered something unique a few years back. But 4x18650 makes them heavy and they are far too big to put in a pocket. The JM35 does the same job, just in a better sized and weighted package and with better tint.

The JM35 can also be had the XHP50 LED. About the same output as the MT-G2, cooler tint and according to reviews throws a bit better.

The Meteor M43 is a bit expensive. From a SRK at 30-40$, you recommand a 178$ light. We are not on CPF.
I am still searching for a good SRK clone around 30$ too.
But I can recommand the Roche M170, price between the Meteor and a SRK.

Ive been wanting an srk style light too and have looked high and low. After hours of research ive decided on the Supfire m6. I just havent purcjased one because i dont have the money and im not sure how to justify why i need so much light. But… i need it… incase my car headlights go out i can tape it to my hood and id be fine. Lol. Im working on it.

Well I bought the cheapest SKR with 4 LEDs I could find.
It is not in yet.
I knew about the issues when ordering, but I want to start learn modding so the looks of this golden beast were apealing to me, and all the other parts can be modded so I did not want to pay more then the 22 I did
Because I just have the idea of using the light for an awesome shiner, so why spend 30 or 40 on the foundation, where with a starting point of 22 I now have 8 to 18 more to spend on stuff for modding it with

The worst part about SRK’s of late isn’t necessarily the emitters or driver (because those are easily replaced), it’s the heatsinking. Where a solid shelf used to be there is now usually a cheap thin piece of aluminum that effectively isolates the emitters from the rest of the body. It can be fixed, but few have the tools to do so.

I think maybe you need to do a little more reading up. The M43 is very well known on BLF and for very good reason. Yes it is a lot of money by comparison, hence why I said as an option. But it really is that much better than an SRK. And let’s face it. If you mod an SRK with copper stars and nice tint LED’s and beef up the driver. You can easily get the price into triple figure. And it still won’t be as good.

I kind of agree that if we’re talking about an SRK the OP probably isn’t interested in spending $150+. Even if you go with a Supfire M6 (much better quality than the average SRK) you are still well-below $100 fully modded. If you have the money, an M43 is worth it, but many like me can’t justify that much on our current budgets.

Suprfire M6: $40
Emitters on Noctigon: $6-7/ea = $18-21 for 3
Driver: $14-15
Total = $76

As pilotdog said above, the emitter shelf is the real quality issue. You'll spend every bit of that $18 you saved by buying the $22 SRK, instead of the $40 M6, Fixing that issue alone. Add in the probability of junk emitters needing replacement that's another $15 if you go cheap and use the stock aluminum star(s) (not recommended, but we're saving money!), and to replace that crap driver you're in for another $14. Hopefully it has decent threads, but it probably doesn't...

Anyway, now that the $22 SRK with is mostly fixed with $47 in parts (if you somehow managed to fix the shelf issue for $18)... You've still got the subpar beam profile ALL srk's share due to the merged emitter wells in the reflector...

The M6 doesn't have that issue or any of the other issues, except maybe the driver which I believe can be resistor modded for free or a few dollars in resistors... Or replace its driver with the $29+ and tons of hassle saved from not buying an SRK.

When you do a side by side comparison....the Meteor and the M6 are the same dough. One has three emitters and the other has 12.

The main thing is that we actually do know that both these lights from this vendor (who can also mod the lights to a buyer's specs) are the real deal and actually work reliably - which the OP mentioned.

It would probably help with the recommendations if we knew what the intended use was but we all agree the current SRK's are not what they were.

That’s something along the lines of what I’m looking for I was a little shocked they wanted $50 for doing the mod to it. I didn’t even read whether it came with batteries at that price or what shipping would be. I was hoping for that price to have everything shipped etc.

Basically I like the profile of the pop can lights. I could get a typical looking light with a long handle (for batteries) to get the longevity but the smaller (rounder) light is what im looking for because it holds four 18650 batteries in a small frame.

As far as beam I need flood not spot. The light needs to be smaller so that it will fit in my truck and is reliable.

In Pennsylvania we just finished up rifle season for deer. The last day of the season I shot a deer but ran out of light trying to track it down. That’s one reason I would like a long lasting light that is also a flood light to cover a nice big area.

My brother ones an original srk (gold one) and I had to drive to his house to get it to go look for my deer. That light worked perfect I just can’t spend $200 on just a light. I wanted an alright light either already modded or stock with a how to mod information. Trying to stay around $75-80 for light and batteries shipped. A talk order I know but I gotta try.

Thank you all again for your help. Please post links to websites so I can find good places to look. Also any recommendations are appreciated.

Well I ordered a SRK with specs and details on the sellers page that resembled the real deal on AliExpres.
As you guys stated, a lot of it would be crap.
And after examination when it came this is hat happened.

1 we (my son and I love the design and feel of it.
1a I ordered a 3 LED one as well, this light we both want to have and the space and sizes makes them ideal for us newbies to work/mod with
2 logo missed TM and KING, driver looked not as the picture, cant get a decent view of the emitters, yes a alu plate is holding them.
3 outside looks very nice, lockout works, when it came it made an ugly sound when (unscrewed), a dab of grease and it runs smooth now.
4 i asked the seller if he had send the right light because of the differences, he wanted pics.
I send the pics, no response.
5 after giving a deadline for response still nothing so I opened dispute 2 hours ago, 30 minutes ago the seller accepted and I will be totally refunded (it had free shipping) basically we got a nice looking host for $0,- now that is some bang for no bucks.

6 I am in the proces of ordering two MCPCBs and two BLF DIY driver sets, from our own RMM with programming of modes we like.

7 now its is time to tackle the poor alu thingy. well I will just be having fun finding some solution for it.
We start by just replacing the driver.
When I am able to make some clear pictures of the emitters I will post them on this forum to see what they are.
Changes are we will replace the emitters as well and I am confident I can mod the heatsinking issue as well (I have a bunch of big silver coins, two of them I would not miss and hamering them to fit over the alu plate or even mod them to make a base for the leds is just one thing I am contemplating now.

To get back on topic and not to hijack this topic, we are specifically looking for something to have fun modding with. The large size appeals to us.

TS is specifically asking for a MOD guide so seems also not afraid of doing work on it.
Maybe it costs a little more in the end then buying a completely good product right away, but the fun and satisfaction can’t be bought I like to think.
And who knows, when TS gets as lucky as I did, he starts of with a free host. For mine the costs are looking like this now
SRK host 0
Driver 7.50
Silver coin 0 (well the silver is worth more, but will still be there)
maybe nice LEDS 4 x 5 = 20
total 27
For the fun we have right now without even having started this seems not like a high price.
And well before I became member here, I found so much inforation on modding, that modding something just seems more like BLF then buying, but well I could be wrong now that the groupbuys and BLF specials are fulfilling all needs and lowering the interest for modding.

Abous the “SQUEALING” sound that some drivers make: dont complain, my brand new 650 euros videocard squeals like a frightened boar  And its the third one, first 2 i swapped cause of this problem( caused by its hi power invertors) and finaly i gave up, this one squeal not that loud though yet i can hear it while loaded heavy

Sometimes the PSU squeals too

My eyesight is terrible but on the plus side I can hear almost like a bat (when I focus on it I can hear a lot of echo spots for any sound and I hear around corners)
The whining of PSUs old TV s and now some pwms can be irritating.
The SRK I received has no problem PWM sounds that’s for sure.
(Try NVidea and Seasonic next pc build never heard anything there

Back on topic, TS would you like to team up in modding? My son and I are newbies but eager to learn.
Could be nice to have 1/topic together so even if one of the mods is going slow there still can be something new to be read and surely we will be looking for same part and guides, tricks and trucs.

Rofl, its exacly Nvidia GTX m8  And Seasonic Platinum 1250w, my PC is heavely modded too btw :

And ofc there are lots 625nm led lights inside, 4 litres of liquid , 40w D5 pump and 2 huge tripple cooling radiators

The millers. Thank you for information you posted It is not out of my ability to mod the light. I am just not a magician with electronics so I would definitely need a step by step how too on how to make that happen etc. Any information you can give me on what light you bought. What websites you got it all from. What all info you got would be appreciated. Thanks again everyone
