OK, I re-enabled automatically subscribing to threads that you participate in. There is a new setting in your user profile under "Subscriptions" if you want to disable this feature.

Please note that email notification are not working yet. That will take considerably more time yet. Sorry for the delay!

What about broken smiley images? IIRC the Advanced Post Editor may have been inserting emoticons directly as images in the past. I could be way off base on that one. See this post for example: http://budgetlightforum.com/comment/817024#comment-817024

I agree. It’s inherently a violation of scope for the forum or stylesheet to alter the content of people’s posts. If someone makes a mess, it should show the mess accurately. But on a per-user basis it can be nice to have an override switch. So there’s a depth-limit stylesheet, a cheap band-aid for when people are sick of the mess and want it fixed now.

Deep quoting can sometimes be useful, and I’d prefer not to eliminate it entirely.

I try to make sure that the only unnecessary data in my posts is my own incessant rambling. Sorry about that.

I went to go look, and I noticed something else. The location field seems to have gone empty in the past day or so. It used to be “Personal Information -> Location” with a value in it, and now it’s “General -> Location” and empty. I restored the old value, but … did everyone just lose their location data?

By chance, I took a screenshot of that yesterday. It looked like this:

It’s not lost, I just have it disabled for now. They are deprecating the old user Profile module in favor of Profile2, and in their typical clumsiness they provide no upgrade path. I do need Profile2 for the Subscriptions system functionality, so I installed the new one and disabled the old one. But if everyone strongly prefers, I can keep digging for a way to migrate the location data. My preference would be for everyone to fill it in again. But you guys/gals decide.

Sorry for all the hassles. Did I mention that the Drupal upgrade process is terrible, horrible, no good, and very bad?

No worries. It’d be ideal to migrate the data but, if not, I doubt it matters much. I understand that Drupal upgrades are rather unpleasantly like trying to pass a kidney stone.

I’m sure that we can all type our locations in again – although some loss might be encountered with defunct or unmotivated users who will never set their location again.

My vote is to save your energy for some more critical aspect of this transition.

We’re on the same page. I’m still not volunteering, and I know that JS isn’t your favorite tool, but someone could potentially port a userscript like the one shown here to work on Drupal: https://www.kongregate.com/forums/1-kongregate/topics/585716-userscript-... – it looks like a winner.

Granted, as a userscript it does very little for mobile users.

The joys of being the boss. You doing a terrific job sb with the minimal disruption to the forum but massive interruption with your normal sleep pattern.
I’d like to see the location of members back and mouseovers but there is no hurry at all. Take your time and as RMM said, well said something like, no hassle. Smile

Hi again SB. I see you’ve been busy. I didn’t get to look at this much over the weekend. Sounds like a royal pain for you. I just wanted to confirm where we are in the user location thing. At this point do we just have to manually repopulate our location? I can live with that, I just want to know what you’d like us to do at this point. If that is the final solution maybe you could send out a mass request for users to update their location. I noticed yesterday that at this time there is no way at all to see a user location. Clicking on the user name no longer lists their location.
Sorry If I’m asking something that’s already ben answered… :-/
Thanks for bring our old emoticons back. Big Smile Beer

Love the changes so far, but I am not able to find the button that once existed under My Account that would list all of my posts… where is that located now???

Would it be possible to get the little arrow next to the right hand window slider that would take you to the top of the page in one click? Ebay uses it and I think it would be very handy.

Thanks for the good work!

Matt

Location: Save your energy for something else. I just updated mine in a few seconds. Maybe post a message that everybody could help make your life easier and allow you to spend your timeon more important things by updating their own profile.

Sorry to hear that Drupal does not think of its users when they produce upgrades.

This is another area where I’d love to see some mobile awareness. For mobile users (phones, tablets) it can be very difficult or impossible to “mouseover”. When that’s the only source for the mouseover image it becomes a roadblock.

I’m not sure how the previous mouseover insertion process previously worked. If the new process worked in such a way that it could be themed or otherwise compatible with a Drupal ‘mobile detect’ type module that would seem to be ideal.

FWIW as long as there isn’t a link embedded in the mouseover image, I can just tap it on my phone to simulate a mouseover, and tap outside the image to “remove” the cursor.

…………………………..

SB, would it be possible to get back the ‘quote’ option for the OP in a thread?

I posted the MouseOver code earlier. I keep that in a .txt file & just bring it out whenever I need it. Works. I was hoping someone would tip in some other parameters…

Actually I can probably add another button to the Simple Post Editor, it’s relatively straightforward. I’ll add it to the list, just not a priority right now.

Ah, good point. I’m not sure what I was thinking of – maybe I’ve had trouble with mouseovers which did include a link, or maybe some particular device I’ve used in the past gave me trouble. Maybe I made it up. Silly Who knows?

As far as the OP quoting issue, it’s known – see post #270 in this thread.

Unfortunately no, it looks like that feature is broken. :-/ The workaround is to copy/paste text into your post, select the text, and then click the button (next to the smileys) to put QUOTE tags around it.

@wight: I wonder how long it’ll be before Apple or Samsung comes out with proximity screen touches where it starts reacting with just a finger hovering over the screen, kind of like with a Wacom drawing tablet?

I bet Apple’s “force touch” stuff could be leveraged in much the same way — light touch replicates a mouseover, heavy touch replicates a click. That’s probably not something a webmaster can implement though. Sounds like a feature of the browser instead.

I don’t think that Apple, Samsung, Et Al find hover desirable. Touch devices such as tablets and phones are intended to be easy to use. Features like “right click” and “hover” are more difficult concepts. (The existence of a ‘cursor’ beyond what is being jabbed at the screen is also more difficult than it’s absence, I suspect.)

While both iOS and Android have been regressing for 2+ years in the UI-simplicity department I do not think that any major player wants to add such inscrutable/ambiguous functionality as “hover”. Furthermore it wouldn’t be useful for any application developed for existing touch-UIs and it would probably encourage all sorts of bad behavior from developers.

On a traditional PC some hover features such as tooltips/infoboxes can be very useful. Hover image swaps are much more questionable IMO. The same effect can easily be achieved with a button which achieves the toggle – if we consider this it quickly becomes clear that a button allows for more flexibility than hover. Consider an example of side-by-side images with mouseovers – how do we compare the “underlying” images? We cannot, with mouseovers. With a click-to-toggle system we could compare the underlying (level 2, whatever) images easily. Clicking/tapping is just as fast as mouseover, maybe faster.

@wight: Yep, I pretty much hate tactile devices anyway, especially due to the mobile OS limitations. I’ll take my laptop with a “real” OS any day over a shackled mobile device.

I also prefer a “real” OS. With that said, I think that there is much room for improvement in the all-touch-OS department. I also think that touch interfaces do have their place.

For all of the things which I refer to as “professional work” a real (traditional) system is still more efficient with a trained operator. That applies from CAD to word processing. The pace at which mobile platforms and apps have advanced has been surprisingly slow (after all, we already know what can be done since we have traditional operating systems and applications!).

Tactile is a fairly broad term btw… – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactile_sensor

I don’t disagree with you but Apple’s force touch is already a thing. What used to be a simple concept (tapping a screen) has now been extended to include more and less forceful touching motions. That’s already happened. Most people I’ve seen sort of equate it with a right-click motion more than hovering, but the fact remains that it already exists. So they’ve already shown their desire to add more complicated interactions to these simple devices. Whether that concept catches on remains to be seen. I’m not an Apple user so I’ve never force-touched anything in my life.

October 2011. Galaxy Note phone. It has a Wacom tablet screen which does exactly that.

Ah really? With a finger or with a stylus?
