Every time I go out for a fire, or help a buddy work on a car. Or just hanging out after dark having a drink outside I think about how nice this lantern will be.

Initially I wasn’t interested, because how often would I use a lantern? But I’ve been using my Q8 in candle mode a lot for the past few months, so I think the BLF lantern will be a nice thing to have.

I’ve been meaning to add a shutoff timer to the candle mode so I can turn it on then go to sleep. I’m thinking it’ll be on forever by default, but the user could click three times to add 30 minutes to the timer. So, turn it on with click-click-hold, and it goes into candle with no timer. Click 3 times to set the timer to 30 minutes. Repeat for 60 minutes. Then maybe 12 minutes pass and the user decides to extend the timer again, so click 3 times to increase it from 48 minutes to 78 minutes.

Could also be useful while hanging out after dark. Like… we can chat for a while, but when the candle burns out it’s bed time. Just set the timer to 2 hours or whatever.

That sounds like a pretty awesome tweak, TK! Thumbs Up I would find a feature like that quite useful in the regular lighting modes as well.

BTW, do you think it would be feasible to add a fade-to-off at the end of the timer? It seems there may be some increased capability for adding some less common features with this driver. I’ve been meaning to do some reading on the coding end of driver configuration, but haven’t gotten that far yet and am unsure if the impact on memory of the additional coding would be impossible.

It already has a sunset mode, which fades from ~15 lm to zero over a period of about an hour, then shuts itself off.

For the candle, I’ll probably make it stay steady until the last minute or so, then fade and snuff out.

Also interested in two. Didn’t even know about this project until a reddit post I found.

Looks like Haikelite kind of beat everyone to the punch. (of sorts). Charger head, with lantern emitters. Can also work as a power bank. Screws onto their flashlight battery tubes.

That looks more like a mule than a lantern…

I guess, if it didn’t have a diffuser like most lanterns have, and mules don’t have

Here is the link for anyone looking for it.

Looks like it only has two unspecified brightness levels and no water resistance – hardly a replacement for the product proposed in this project, and two instant deal breakers for me.

Thats why I said “sort of”, I never said replacement. It will be a deal breaker for anyone who doesn’t have a Haikelite. They advertise it as a battery charger, but I’m sure the idea combining a lantern was lifted from this thread going on for the last two years. If this one ever gets done, it will certainly be a better “lantern”. Goes unsaid.

edit… and I still haven’t read where this will be designed to fit the Q8 battery tube. I know it’s been suggested many times.

Sure I’d be up for 1 maybe 2 depending on final specs and price.

That don;t look like a good lantern for 360 degree lighting, and if its like Haikelite’s recent issues and poor customer service it wont be worth what they want for it. (I have been battling Haikelite for a crap dead MT01 i bought from them now since fall of 2017, and all i got was excuses, ignorance, a run around, and BS from them. They are on my red-flag list of manufacturers to avoid.

My apologies to everyone for the lack of updates, as mentioned above i did a job change, preparing for separation from my ex, and dealing with life’s hard times over the last few months. I am working on the prototype in the garage however, and will have the updated & simpler prototype ready to show, and with a cross section & specs info to see if we can get this rolling soon. With the disappearance of TheMiller from BLF for some time also made it more difficult, (Update: April,12,6:51-PM,2018) Just found out he posted recently again) We will need help with the rest of the remaining team and any help from new team members expertise to get this into a production model would be good. My experience with talking to manufacturers is not much as compared to what TheMiller was able to do as he did for the BLF Q8, he was a great key member who have the knowledge to work that step. Have patience everyone, I am still pushing on this project to make it a reality, regardless of the delays..

  • Also Interest list is updated!
