what mod?

Relatively new here - just got a Convoy C8 and s2+, and wondering whether there are any common, recommended mods to the lights that make them ‘better’ -and I know there are many different versions of ‘better’ out there! Input welcomed……

A C8 is usually appreciated for its throw, so changing the XM-L2 for a XP-L Hi improves the throw (because of the different led-size you need a different led centering ring). While you’re at it, install a direct driver (I like the BLF-A6 driver from Banggood) and buy the led installed on a 16mm copper board (intl-outdoor.com), for more current and thus better output.

The S2+ can be made very impressive by making it a triple XP-L Hi, a famous but advanced mod, and the resulting light will have serious heat issues when run on high setting (but nice output and runtime on lower settings when using the BLF-A6 driver). You need a spacer (I make my own), a triple optic, a triple board, leds, skills, and tips from others here on BLF (try searching for S2+ triple) who have done that before.

The best source for upgrade parts would be Mountain Electronics from the US (they have everything you could ever want for modding), it is worth the shipping costs to the UK if you buy a bunch of parts at a time. Problem here in Holland is that packages from the US get inspected (with 18 or so euro handling costs for the customer) regularly, while everything from the far east arrives uninspected.

+1 to all of the above.

However an A6 driver in a C8 will be a PITA in my opinion, as it always starts on Moon, which for a C8 type of light is not all that useful. And getting to Turbo/High is fiddly and requires a lot of clicks.

The performance of the driver and the modes are however fantastic, such a shame you can’t reverse the mode order on it, like you can with the latter X5/X6 drivers.

Enable mode memory… Problem solved.

Rich at MtnE can also set you up with a different UI on that or one of the other drivers, there’s plenty of choice.

No not at all. I can think of few things worse than memory on a 7 mode driver. As it’s a complete lottery on what you may get when you turn it on. And could easily place youself further away from the mode you want.

A 3 mode or 2 mode driver, memory works quite well however.

I do wish people wouldn’t keep posting this sort of thing.

The fact is, if you are not in the USA, Mtn Electronics is simply too expensive to realistically purchase from. I appreciate they do sell via their international site and that there might be a few exceptions who will pay.

e.g.
BLF A6 driver = $13.10
Shipping = $13.25

TOTAL = $26.35

And that was listed as USPS, so could still take 2 weeks to get to you.

Banggood A6 driver $4.50 with free shipping.

I’d love to support RMM, but in the UK you’d have to be bonkers to spend $26 for a driver to put in a $15 torch.

I keep reading “buy from MTN” everywhere on this sweet place…I’d LOVE to order from them, seriously !
But man does it costs money to ship overseas !
We need a European alternative :weary:

Here’s how I built my Convoy EDC-sized triples:

Actually, both the lights you already have are great as-is, depending on which driver you have.

I haven’t installed an XP-L HI in a C8 personally, but I do know they are picky about spacing. You’ll need to make sure the depth is right to take full advantage of that emitter in a reflector-based light.

Yeah! James is the one you’re looking for! :slight_smile:

thanks all - glad the choices meet with approval, as they were based on discussions here……

will explore some options……

This is the whole reason I set up the UK/EU website :slight_smile:

if you turn on and then do a long press you go backwards into high.

you can also change to 4 modes if suits,

Thanks but I do know how to use the driver modes. But none do the right thing. It is a physical impossibility to get to Turbo quickly and I do not like the muggle mode as it misses out on the most important outputs.

It is potentially a great driver, but massively flawed in anything other than a pocket EDC light.

Well I’m aware of your iste but the £6 shipping fee for such small parts is killing the deal once again…I’m aware of the problems you encountered with a few packages “losts” but really that’s about 8€ for an enveloppe :frowning:
Don’t misread me, your shop is awesome and you provide a great alternative with quality gears !

It’s just jealousy. As am I when looking at Cutters site or any of a number of other sites including some in the UK that charge plenty plus extra for shipping. Some I’ve ended up buying from anyway like both Cutter and WeberSports. If he doesn’t know about it he can’t decide for himself. :stuck_out_tongue:
