edit: ^^^ That was with wimpy XP-G2s, the XPL-HI versions will set a credit card on fire.

I’ve been wanting to offer a 3x XPL-HI in the store, but I cant seem to find a way to fix the beam. All of the optics I tried left these artifacts around the edges of it. It could be that I am more sore about this, the way some are about tint. Have you found an optic or a way to fix that comfy?

Here is another one, scroll over to the 8:10 mark for the burning session…

You talking about the ridges/tails around the outside when wall hunting? Doesn't bother me, since they disappear when you switch from looking at the pattern to looking at what the light is being pointed at. The Carclo 10507 has a clean cutoff, but it's an awful beam shape - all one giant hotspot, like a reflectorless mule with a restricting collar. The 10511 has a nice reasonably tight center spot, and usable spill, most similar to a normal single LED/reflector combo. What is the purpose of a flashlight, after all? Is it to make nice shapes on a wall?

I have been out at night with the 3x XPL and knocked moths out of the air (unintentionally). They flutter around towards the light, get within about a foot, and go all wonky and fall to the ground. The moths don't seem to notice the beam pattern isn't perfectly round around the outside edge.

edit: The Carclo 3-up beams show the same behavior with any LED, it's nothing to do with the XPL-HIs. Dale has said good things about the LEDILs, but then he really likes the 10507, so...

Thanks Comfy. I’m just wandering if maybe something else hadn’t gone wrong with my first trial of XPL hi and the 3 up optic. When I did it I use the 10507 because its what I had around. I not only got the rough edges, I got these little purple spikes that came out in 3 spots where the emitters were.

Anyway RMM was out of the 10507 the other day, and I picked up the frosted 10511 and tried it just now on the 3 XPLHI and it looks just fine. Rough on the edges but the purple splines are not there. Score for me

One other question. When you burnt that credit card did it damage your optic at all? When I did the maglite vid it did not so when you mentioned doing it with XPLs I gave it a shot. If I take the mag and hold it upright and simply throw some paper over it will burn through that in like nothing flat. It looks slow in the vid cuz I had it pressed against the paper hard.

Anyway I got a similar result as far as burning a hole in paper with the 3 XPL HI in a convoy C8 running about 8 amps. However when I turned the bezel down on the paper to try and get an actual fire I ended up melting the optic. Was yours still in tact? Did the card melt or catch fire. I’m not doubting you or anything, I didn’t have as good of a result with the small light.

I built an XHP50 mag with one of your heatsinks and damn near burned my hand once I finished it.

I have a 1.5mm glass lens, I'm sure the TIR gets hot enough to go soft but haven't had any change shape enough to loosen the bezel (the way the light's made the bezel doesn't bottom out in the head, it seats on the lens/TIR/MCPCB to provide clamping). I check the bezels often and haven't found any that could be tightened further, like would happen if the TIR got soft enough to get squeezed down shorter. I would not want to try this craziness without a lens in front of the TIR. Leather gloves are also mandatory if I override the 120-sec turbo timer. Probably not the wisest thing to do with a single 18650 pocket light!

Since when does wise have place in this hobby
