Off-topic again from the charger discussion: camping with proto3

Here’s another beamshot of the prototype, control and beamshot not the same camera settings but it is both about what you see in reality. Nearest tree at 10 meter, campfire at 20 meter, tree in hotspot 40 meter, birch tree to the right of hotspot tree 60 meter, little building 70 meter.

We were not allowed a large fire because lf the drought and remarkably proto3 with a yellow plastic cup on top became the center of the group instead of the fire (the evenings were really warm so the fire was not needed for warmth), the next evening it was an orange+pink cup.(I’m not in the pictures Innocent )

I do not know the drive current while serving as camping light (I chose a pleasurable setting in ramping mode) but after two nights with at least 10 hours of use, the 30Q’s were still at 4.05V.

That cup and brightness setting off the Q8 on that last pic gives it a fire-like look, sweet!

This thread has over 8000 posts. Its hard to stay up to date with this flashlight.
Please do not post hundreds of posts with discussions of batteries, chargers and so on. That would make it easier to follow this topic.

So, a medium low level with an orange and pink cup and one Ghost Pepper made for a nice campfire setting with scary stories, how great is that! Epic light, and it’s only got a few pieces out there yet!

Oh for a flickering or lightning mode when you need one…

The real important things call for a topic title change and a link to the post from where it is talked about. Now it is waiting and I’d rather see a little of topic then having to say “we don’t know when it is done, waiting for input” Wink
And I saw the charging with a non standard bought charger already has lead to a different topic so that is cool right.

4.05V after two nights? Not bad… Sounds like the batteries won’t die easily. The Q8 is like Bruce Willis in Die Hard.

Kumbaya, mister flooder.

That’s definitely begging for a candle flicker mode.

A campfire/candle flicker mode would certainly be fun to have for the Q8 but I’m pretty sure that at least in our camping group that would be considered so over the top fake that it would not be used seriously. Party

djozz, if the flicker/candle mode were mixed in to the ramping levels, so that the general lighting level was the “off” part of the cycle, and the flash of the “on” cycle wasn’t too bright, I think it could work. The trick to being less “fake” is to be less distracting, so smaller changes in the “flicker”.

I think the time for staying strictly on-topic has come and gone and come and gone again. Brevity no longer matters. Not just in this thread, but for BLF in general… it’s a playground, not a press release. Some threads here are more disciplined, but not many.

Besides, The Miller keeps the good stuff indexed and updated in the first post or two. The rest is mostly how we pass the time until release, and also has a side effect of keeping the thread on the front page for more visibility. The lengthy brainstorming and chatter has also significantly influenced the design of the light. So, it may be a mess, but it serves a purpose… or several purposes. And for those who want a slow trickle of updates instead of a raging river, the topic and first post cover everything really important.

Hehe i have that campfire mode, but while it is LED’s it is in my G-scale train.

FF to about 1:30 and you can just make out the flickering “fire”

I was actually thinking in this regard, would it be possible to suspend something inside the cup that the convection heat from the light could make turn, and by doing that have little offset reflectors maybe colored move around.

Sort of the same you can do with candles making something spin.

There are some awesome layouts in the States, there is a few i just got to see if i ever get over there.

One must visit garden is Dennis in California i believe.

Imho the best way to put a garden to use.

Before anyone get exited, there are NO budget in large scale railroading, you fast end up with spending so much you could buy up a flashlight making company or 2.

…now wondering how a real campfire flickering looks on a luminosity graph over time. A mix of slow modulations with random ‘spikes’…? It would be interesting to record one live with a phone app. How different would it be over time, as the fire slowly burns out? What a candle would look like?

…and how you code it.

And how about the “vintage flickering” mode? Like when the light occasionally flickers to a lower brightness but you can get it working fine again by shaking it… Facepalm

You would need at least a couple of colors ( red & yellow )
As per always my brain have been wandering off outside the box so many people find them self locked within.

So now i am where it might be better if you was to make a add-on like that simple cup, and then inside it have some reflectors ( clear and colored ) move around driven by a small gear reduction and a electric or mechanical drive.

This way you could use other sized flashlights with adapters and it would probably be a good idea to provide a dock as most lights to my knowledge dont do tail stand so good ( at least off table flat surface )

Sadly i have too much on my hands and my one small reduction gearbox and little motor are tied to a tightrope setup for a “flying” camera jig i am also brainstorming / working on for awesome time-lapse photography and video time-lapse.

Yes Sparky, they can get very expensive. In my hometown there was a club that bought a building and had their layout in it. During the holidays they’d open it up to the public. Too cool! No one person could afford it. You know there is a massive one in Germany, right? It’s a youtube video. But you’ll need to find it. If memory serves it’s in Hamburg. I could be wrong though.

There are fireplace videos on youtube if that helps.

FWIW, I downloaded one years ago and took it into work. During the Christmas holidays and on exceptionally cold days I would play it looping on the computer monitor for ambiance in our very industrial setting. One day a muckety muck came in and asked if we had the boiler feed on the monitor. The U&R control room had cameras on the 13 story boiler as an aid for the operators. I have no idea what he was told I simly don’t remember, but I think we just agreed with him. That video feed was hardwired into the U&R control room and not on a LAN.

OK, now I’m on a roll… I also brought in the sound of a submachine gun firing, complete with brass hitting the concrete (from a game). When management would have a scheduled meeting during a shutdown (for the required quiet for best effect) , I’d play it over the PA system. There was a price on my head if I ever got caught. Then that audio took on a life of it’s own and others would play it. I was safe.

Maybe at one time that could have been funny; however today I think not. Too many truly crazy, derangged folks for that to be humorous to me today.

Thank goodness it wasn’t “today” then; I don’t think I stated that it was. I thought I indicated that it was in the past and you have no idea how old I am (yet). Lighten up, you are basing your comment on much less than complete facts which I didn’t supply and still won’t fully supply. It was humor (and a statement) and most everyone at the time knew it. But it pissed management off and that was the point since they had been implicated by upper management. The blue collar workers thought it was a hoot even if you don’t and it was for them. “They” (from Boston) made a rule that anyone caught with a firearm, even in their vehicle and unloaded, would be terminated. This in a hunting state where workers would hunt after work and where lots of folks have concealed carry permits. That didn’t sit well even with management. It was just a BS rule, that could have dire consequences for anyone caught. Let’s see, looking at it logically… someone is going to bring a firearm in to work to off some folks, and the threat of losing ones job will deter that? Pure BS since the person would automatically be sitting in jail or be dead. It’s difficult to get to work when behind bars or a corpse. Hence the machine gun. Anyone with a brain knew that any firearms only had to be hidden and life continued on as before*. Today, by law, anyone with a concealed carry permit can have a firearm in the car on those same premises and the company can’t say squat. That law is today, the other was long ago. It was too many Boston folks telling rural folks how to live. Then to compound their error and to make sure the place was a free fire zone they put signs out on the main road telling everyone that no firearms were allowed on the premises. Now how stupid is it to announce that!?? Mass shootings pretty much happen only under those circumstances. Again, hence the submachine gun. Folks at work fully understood it.

*One morning when I was particularly sleepy I walked into the place with my bagged EDC gun, and after setting it on the countertop in it’s incognito bag I realized what I had done. After shift change I walked back out to my car and placed it inside, still covered and “out of sight” while being perfectly in sight. The evil gun was contained and never was allowed to run amok but I could see the evil glint in it’s barrel. I have no proof of this, but I strongly suspect that even security knew what I had hidden in my vehicle and out of sight for all those years. Heck, many of them did also. We wouldn’t discuss that specifically, but we would discuss handgunning. If they had ever been told to search vehicles I would have gotten into it and driven it out onto the public way and off of the private property. But as I wrote, today that’s moot. I don’t work there (retired) and if I did, with a CC permit it’s perfectly legal and they can’t do anything about it by law. Times change.

Yeah that place in Germany are just Ho scale, but none the less mighty impressive.

I was just pulled over tonight at 01:30 some 6 hours ago, now my otherwise clean rep sheet are marked with me driving with a deadly weapon in my car ( a child baseball bat made of like .08 mm alu )

Fawking unbelievable in this POS country you cant even have a toy ( you can buy then in every sporting goods store even the grown up ones too )

BUT ? you just cant have it in your car.

So i will be replaces with a pice of 2 × 4 that’s totally legal to have lying around the car.

But good thing i wasent padded down cuz i was carrying my EDC folding knife, and that would have landed me a weapons conviction and a hefty fine.

Im like so not cut out for this spineless country. Sick

Sparky, that’s ridiculous! You were driving a car! If that can’t be used as a deadly weapon I have no idea what can be. Instead of running someone over you’ll stop and bludgeon them? That’s laughable! How does one get to the game? Would it be illegal to carry on a bicycle? Or does it need to have over 50ccs for it to be illegal?

I’m certainly glad I live in a free state here in the US. (not all states in the US are free)

It seems as if BLF’s community and projects have been getting bigger over time. While it’s too late for the Q8 project to do so, perhaps future projects would be advised to have two threads instead of just one? One thread would be like we usually do, with the full firehose of discussion… and the other thread might be a curated “digest” or used for announcements only?

I’m not sure if it’s needed or not, but it would give people a middle ground between first-post-only updates and the full discussion.

If people running future projects are willing, perhaps it’d be good to give the idea a try, to see if it’s worthwhile?

Meanwhile, we have only the firehose… and the rules are pretty simple. As Bill & Ted would put it, “Be excellent to each other”. Or as Wil Wheaton puts it, “Don’t be a dick”. Those are both pretty open to interpretation though, so our friendly neighborhood admin created a more detailed set of rules to clarify a few things.

This thread has pushed the edges of some of those rules at times, occasionally stepping a bit beyond rules 1, 2, 3, and 4, but as far as I’m aware none of it has gone far enough to require any intervention… people usually just tell each other to be nice and then things get better.

I know I have difficulty respecting rule 2 at times (profanity/lewdness), and I have a tendency to go waaaaay off-topic. I do try to keep things interesting though, so if I think a post has no value to others and would be a waste of the seconds it takes to read, I try to keep it to myself. Because rule 9 — have fun. That’s what all this is really about, no?
