For the more non DIY folks who are barely hanging on to the discussion on specs, should we also talk about an actual performance goal? Lumens, beam width, distances, runtime, etc… I think it’s awesome to just throw a bunch of cool parts together and see what happens, but a consensus on what we actually want it to do will help drive the specs a little more accurately, yes?
How about, “illuminate a football field from the 15th row with enough light to play by for 2 hrs”. I’m still learning, be gentle.
Note that a good AR coated lens doesn’t cause a noticeable tint shift. There are a lot of lenses out there that are coated, but only AR for red, but quite reflective for blue, which causes the tint shift.
Well ideally we have a choice between a couple of emitters but indeed going for the Cree HI seems a better choice if only 1 led is to be chosen. Maybe that would make two tint options easier.
This depends on the production side. And well a PM informing Thorfire what a SRK is was just send today.
We are early in the process and saying yes does not lock one, bit it sure gives a good idea that stepping into this project as manufacturer is a good plan, so thanks for the many interest posts!
I would think attaching the handle to the tail end of the tube or tailcap would be better. Attached to the area that radiates heat produced by the emitters the handle might get a bit hot in the upper modes.

I took my Warson X65 with nut for tripod out.
Have a laser guiding thingy that came with a small metal tripod
Screwed it in and secured it as if it is a handle.
Works great.
Adding a handle to the mix would complicate things, add more material.
A nut in the head could be taken into account, it is a smaller addition.
But problem with a handle is 1 the looks and 2 location, ideal for a right handed person it should be placed as Freemes pic. But for looks having a nut would look best opposite of the button, not somewhere close to its right or left.
Also, when a handle is really wanted, just attach something to the removable part at the bottom of the battery tube (to get a handle like the Palight Boss) and position it to your liking and if you are left- or right handed.
Right?

My M6 (SRK style) with three XM-L2 U3 2A’s does 5000 lumens . I would expect less from a high CRI 4 LEDSRK. 2A tint is considered cool white.
wow 5000 lumens? how fast it get hot?
all of my flashlight wont touch more than 3000 lumens at best because it will be to hot to handle
Just ran it for 90 secs, and it got warm, nothing crazy. If I were to turn on the turbo timeout, I’d probably set it for 2 mins.
The M6 has a nice tripod mount btw, much better than the “nut light”. It’s near the head, opposite side of the switch – not perfectly weight centered though.
One more idea from the peanut gallery. Probably not for this group buy, but maybe in the future. A “mini” SRK with 4P 14500 and 4x XPL HI V3 emitters! Integrated shelf should dissipate heat well enough. Smaller reflector size would ensure less throw, but who ever bought SRK for throw anyway? Sizing it down to 4× 14500 would make it pocketable, and with the 4x XPL HI V3 emitters, it would still be awesomely bright! A lot of the longer standing members already have SRK-size SRK’s (LOL), but the smaller size would make it unique, and possibly more would be on board for one. Then again, maybe I’m the only one.
One note about the size: the ratio of diameter/length of a 14500 is almost exactly the same as 18650, so the entire body design of the SRK could just be scaled down a bit and still look and function the same. Nothing new to design, really. Upgrade the driver and LEDs of course, just like we’re talking about here.
That form factor would be very very cool, I’m all for it, but I would not like to miss out the chance to make it 4S on Eneloops (+alkalines for backup): the energy density will be a little less, but the batteries are safe and available everywhere. And you have 4.8V nominal and great current capability (at 10A you still have over 4V to play with) to make it a real hotrod.
This mini 14500 / Eneloop SRK sounds like a great idea. I would definately participate if someone honchos a GB.
I just bought one of RMMs Supfire M6s with the full upgrade and 5D3 tint. It is a wonderful, powerful, floody and throwy light. The contrast and detail from the 5D3 tint is far superior to the cool tint floody lights I have.
I will wait and see how this full SRK GB progresses. Subscribed.
Any way we could run this thing off an external power supply? Seems like it would make for a good work light.
Hmm, IDK if 4 P cells can be charged safely.
But the idea of having a system like the Convou BD0x sound really good.
Snap on, waterproof, usable while charging, no internal micro USB port,
I do not know how much it would add to overall build costs but think it is worth exploring right?

Now that would get me interested..
Any chance on using the light as a usb backup charger then as well? Maybe with an external usb cable attaching to the waterproof connector?
In that case I will be in! Would make it a nice travel light and have a backup charger during the zombie apocalyps
add me
but I would really like it to be compatible with flat top cell, like on the Roche M170 with an adapter.

hmmm, a nut to attach it to a tripod was mentioned before.
adding that would also make attaching a handle easier besides being usefull.

sorry all images down
thanks photobucket
I think so. There are a lot of gadgets out there with tripod screws.
Oh and I am somewhat interested, depending on what kind of driver this ends up with and how moddable it is.

+1 on the tripod mount.

Thanks for starting this up.
I could do one.
