I am really liking the new “rude button” feature. It levels the field for all members.
Rude is rude whether one is a seasoned BLF member, a one day old new person, or anywhere in between.
Since this feature was implemented I have noticed there has been an almost immediate change in the posting behavior of some in all three of those categories.
[ I would fall into the “in between” member myself….. in between seasoned and new. ]
I like the fact that each individual can see their “rudeness quotient”. Even though it has shrunk to super small, I hope it does remain visible to the individual.
I think a “thank you” or “+1” button at the bottom of a post would give others the option to acknowledge a post they wanted to without necessarily having to quote it and reply. Thus keeping threads cleaner.
I also think this should be unique to each post and not combined for a cumulative total or go toward karma points.
That only has the potential to turn things into a circus and / or a popularity contest.
These are my thoughts on the matter. YMMV
.
Also, what pilotdog68 said below sums it up perfectly…….

I think many of you are taking this whole thing too seriously.
1. If you have a high rude score, nobody else will know but you (and SB)
2. If you have a high rude score, look at those posts and see if you broke some rules or were actually rude.
3. If you did break rules/were rude, clean up your act!
4. If you feel you were totally in line and the Rude! marks were unwarranted, don’t sweat it! If you really were rude, sb will message you. If you really weren’t rude and the people who marked you as such are abusing the feature, sb will contact them.

I use my tablet a lot when on BLF. Real easy to accidentally hit that button then because of touch screen feature and small size. Maybe make the rudeness button a two stage design. After you hit the button asking are you sure you wish to use this feature?

I continue to think this is a silly and unnecessary addition for a forum. I notice how silly it is every time I see the counter that shows 0 rudeness/10 rudeness. lulz!

Check your counter again. I just marked your comment as rude.
This is a big one for me. I don’t give other users moderator permissions here because it’s extremely hard for a moderator to be objective and fair 100% of the time. And as a matter of fact I don’t even entirely trust myself as a good moderator. Certain people and certain issues personally rub me the wrong way, and there are others that I would tend to view with much more leniency. But it’s not all about me, and the Rudeness Level will be a huge help as a quantifiable meter that I can take into account when I inevitably have to make hard moderation decisions.
At the risk of sounding like a brown noser, the above is perhaps a definitive description of someone who makes a good moderator. As with politicians, anyone who actually WANTS the job, is probably not the right person for the job. This system (the ‘Rude’ button) that you have set up, offloads a little bit of the burden onto the rest of us, and reminds ALL of us to keep our attitudes in check.
I strongly disagree with those who claim that “labels like “rude” and “troll” are used to silence those who choose to dissent from majority opinion”. While they certainly CAN be used in that way, an objective observer can see through throwing labels around. On the other side of the same coin, dissent can be (and in fact MUST be, to be taken seriously) expressed clearly WITHOUT the use of rude and trollish behavior.
And it lets Sb see more easily where problems most likely are, by letting the community vote on what is a problem.

Sb, I think this is a great way to help moderate without active moderating. I respect the freedom allowed here and do my best to never take it for granted. I’ve said before though that a group of people this enthusiastic about any particular thing is going to have plenty of passionate people. We enthusiasts do get fired up on a topic from time to time and say too much or go too far. I know I have. This is a good way for people to see what does and doesn’t offend. It also embraces the cultural and ethnic diversity of our forum. Some of our members could easily offend someone out of lack of English skills. This will be helpful there too.
The effectiveness of this has already showed it’s worth. Just a few weeks ago things were escalating to uncomfortable levels in a few threads. I saw a marked turning point and behavioral shift back towards the friendly helpful BLF I love. I didn’t realize you had put this in place until just a few days ago and just found this thread last night. Well done once again my friend. Bravo!
It’s nice that we can see which posts were marked rude. I’d like to know who marked which posts rude.
Absolutely. If you wouldn’t mind please mark one of my posts rude. I’d like to see this system in action. I assume you realize I marked yours just having as a bit of fun to test the system.
Edit: I meant that I like that people can see which of their posts was marked rude, not that who marked it should be shown. Who flagged what absolutely needs to be anonymous to all but SB.

Hi J-Dub74, here’s the link to see your posts that were flagged, if any: http://budgetlightforum.com/my-problem-posts
Sorry I haven’t figured out a way yet to make this menu link only appear for logged-in users, so it’s not on the left-hand column yet.

I know! There was a problem, but he didn’t make more rules and get more people to enforce them..
Instead he created an incentive for the current rules to be self-enforced.

Thanks SB. I realize now that I saw that yesterday.
At the risk of belaboring the point, I’d like to remind everyone once more that the Rude! button should not be used to express disagreement or disinterest in the post, or to express dislike of the poster. It’s only meant for rude, lewd, or conflictive posts. Another synonym for this button would be “Inappropriate”.
Perhaps it would be useful to add that to the Rude! confirmation page. Especially if you suspect that some people are using it like that. Though, I can see that it might feel a little long with that added.
How about a Ban button then? When the established community finds that an individual does not fit in for whatever reason is deemed appropriate for continued membership here, you can click the ban button and once it gets to a certain predetermined level, SB is summoned to his computer to make a final determination.
Basically this is how the Rude! button works. I try to deal with problematic users on a case-by-case basis, so there are no hard and fast rules about X number of Rude! hits = ban, but it’s always a last-recourse option.

I love these slippery slope arguments, soon we will be arguing that if we allow grass to grow then aliens will be coming to enslave the human race. Bit of a stretch, and there are two or three steps missing, but those aliens are coming

I’m still reading, so maybe someone else has already mentioned this, but I’d think making the Rudeness Meter itself clickable, linked to /my-problem-posts might be neat.

Good idea! Not sure how easy it will be to do technically though.

On the other hand,i have 0 out of 10 – so what does it mean?
Good idea SB! Go on like this …
