General purpose budget folder knife ?

As above I am looking to purchase my first folder.
It will be used for general things around camp when away in my camper van.
I have been using the blade on a multi tool (Lalizas) for light general purpose stuff & TBH although the multi tool is very handy it could do with a better blade.
Budget up to say around $20 & not to short a blade.

If you go up $5 you could get an Ontario Rat knife. There’s two blade sizes so you could see which you prefer. The build quality is top notch, the steel used is great and the handle is very comfortable to hold. Can be found for $25.

What features do you want? Things like what locking mechanism? What blade material?

Ha just check gearbest deals almost all Ganzo folders can he bought for $10-14
G727 is my favorite in yellow (gives it more tool like look.)
Nice big blade, good axel locking, sharp and easy to sharpen because of the shape of the blade)
I gifted my black G727 and that one is used for fishing, camping and such and the new owner thanks me every time I see him. I gave him $1,50 strapping thingy (2 pieces of fabric from very smooth to less smooth) and he uses it after each time of use getting home and it is not in need of sharpening.

Any links to this knife please ?
Bear in mind I am in the UK & shipping from the US or Canada normally kills a deal.

I think it’s going to be up to your preference of size/shape/contours. Ganzo has a wide selection and is highly regarded around here. I don’t have any to comment on, other than this…

…but as it’s an unusual design, I would expect a more conventional model to serve you better.

I don”t know enough about knives to be able to answer those questions I am sorry :frowning:
At present I have 20”/51cm Whitby Machete (15” blade) that I use for cutting brush & a bit of fire wood, a couple of Martini filleting knives & a multi tool with a 3” blade that I use for general purpose stuff that the Machete is to big for.
So I am after something to use instead of the multi tool blade & have asked on here as I know nothing about steels or lock mechanisms.
I have looked on GB & been totally confused by the number & choice.

All knifes that we get in het the same treatment
Unbox
Sharpness test
Baton through a 1m piece of well seasoned oak (we have 2m3 pieces of oak left over from barrel production so it is well seasoned and has no irregularities and all is about the same size)
Chip some oak
Sharpness test

I know folders should not be used for batoning yet I think a knife must be able to endure something (I always carry a folder and not always a fixed blade and want to be able to use it

All the Ganzos and Enlans (only have 2 Enlans) passed this test.
A Cima fixed broke lol.

I use the G727 the most because of its big blade and yellow scales (wood looks very nice but dropping it in between plants is a PITA.

I can”t find the G727 on GB to have a look at The Miller, do you have a link please ?

Oh & what is the difference between an axis lock & frame lock please ?

Check

http://m.gearbest.com/pocket-knives-folding-knives/pp_230536.html

This has a knob to pull to unlock the blade where frame lock has a piece of metal to push to unlock
I prefer axis lock since no fingers in the way of the closing blade
But my Enlan EL01 had that and it works good too
It is also a matter of getting used to something.
When I grab the Enlan the first couple of closings I fiddle at the location where the axis lock of the Ganzo s are but after a few days of use switching back to Ganzo I press at the Enlan location the first couple of closings.

There is no yellow ganzo-knives in 7-SERIES.

Thanks for the link The Miller, I have just ordered the Ganzo G727m in orange
Please god don”t let me become addicted to knives the same way as I am addicted to lights :person_facepalming:

You’ve got no chance mate - my first was a little SanRenMu GB-763 (also axis lock, though it’s a dinky little blade) a few years ago and I’m probably up to around 70 blades now. Virtually all of them are at the budget end of the spectrum but I like them. I’ve got a curly birch Enzo PK70 with “scandi” grind which was about £100 and is legal carry (non-locking, sub 3” blade) - that’s my fanciest knife but I have dozens of others which I really love too.

Any questions, drop me a PM and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Good luck,

SP

Ah yes orange instead of yellow lol

BH you decide, for me they are tools so I want a few spare (I mean I have more then one saw too  )
I do not feel any urge to get more then we have now.
Though i am beating up a $12 “Browning” fixed blade pretty hard, I removed the wood so not to damage it and have a second as spare. Maybe I get a third if I see it again for$11 like the second was. It is so well made with its full tang that holds nice without the wooden parts it is my go to knife for batonning
And I baton a lot
For removing branches of 12-14m long bamboo (three branches each node from 2 meter up) to become poles nice to handle (pliers, saws etc leave a little piece of the branches that stick out)
And when cut to size to split it (just finished splitting 95 poles of about 2 meter)

That Ganzo will do an excellent job for all sorts of tasks (I love slicing garlic with it, do thin they dissolve when put in the pan  )

Well my orange Ganzo G727M arrived yesterday the 19th, so 11 days after ordering it
Not very sharp initially but a few light passes over a “Blade tech” sharpener & it was extremely sharp :+1:
Here it is with an old Martini of Finland 6” filleting knife I have

The following day (9th) I also ordered a cheap fixed blade knife to leave on my boat http://www.gearbest.com/fixed-blades-knives/pp_236202.html?wid=21
I suppose the addiction has begun as I am now finding myself looking at knives & thinking that I need them :person_facepalming:

No no that fixed is terrible, I broke one in half
Let me link you up with a real nice fixed blade.

And I have gifted my second G727
The first one to a guy who uses it it for fishing and now the latest to a firemen to replace his folder. I showed it and he really liked it so now he has it and I can wait for another gearbest deal on the 727 (better buy 2 or 3 this time  )
BH cancel that order BRB

Yes here you go
Had to look good they are sold for $17 and $18 as well http://s.aliexpress.com/iUZr2Ufu

This is really good. I removed the wood on one to keep it nice and still it holds good.
I batonned through 95 pieces of 2m bamboo with it and it works like a charm

I have an extra so if you want it faster I am happy to trade it for the cool parts of a Cometa?

Good choice on the G727, one of my favorite knife, perfect ergonomic. If you want something smaller I recommend the fantastic Sanrenmu 7010. Knife addiction is worst than flashlight.

It has already shipped The Miller & I am expecting it any day now :person_facepalming:
It is only a spare as I already have a couple of knives on my boat & may possibly never get used so not really a problem.
