Cool… Curious its just a single aspheric optic correct? So OTF lumens decreases when the die image is brought into focus… correct?

Yes only one single convex lens. I don’t have a light meter, however in my “eyeball” ceiling bounce test it does appear to have less output when zoomed in to spot, compared to out wide at flood.

Nice beam0, one guy from amazon reviewed a3s and he got 1500 lumen using sony vtc5a.. wow. I cant wait to see your beamshots.

Well, no beam shots yet… The first thing that struck me was it’s size, it’s is way smaller than it looked in the photos.

I don’t have a light meter but this thing is really bright on a 30Q. I had to use a magnet on the tail for the 30Q because of the battery length issue (it uses a USB charging type cell that is longer than usual, and the battery compartment was made longer to accommodate it, making it too long for usual cells)

…………….Battery size difference…………………………Magnet on battery negative end………………………Battery with magnet……………. . .

.

…………………..A few comparison pics……………………………………………and with Convoy 18350 tube………………………

.

.
I compared it with my low tech eyeball ceiling bounce test and it’s just as bright as my BLF A6 (no spring bypass, so probably around 1300lm) Also as bright as my new 1380lm Litesam PS16. I’d say it’s putting out at least 1300lm on the 30Q.

I love this light! The zooming action is sooooo smooth and “just right tight” the beam pattern is perfect, no rings, artifacts or dark spots throughout the entire zooming travel. The flood beam is great.. just a big smooth even perfect circle of light. The tint is on the cool end of neutral and it’s pure white. No yellow or blue at all. The UI is excellent. The switch is excellent, it has great knurling and feels nice and solid in the hand.

The only things I would have liked would be a flat stainless “Foy” bezel. (I’m not too fond of the crenelated bezels) Love the stainless bezels. Also the head could have been made a bit thinner, it’s way thick at the front surrounding the lens. At this size they could’ve put a bigger diameter optic in it.

.

I’m real happy with this light, it’s hands down my best zoomie right now, and really awesome with the Convoy 18350 tube and Aspire IMR 1100!
EDIT; this is actually the Jaxman tube, which is slightly longer than the Convoy.

Here it is with the Convoy tube:

Wow, it does indeed! Thanks, I’ll add it to the list!

Although the price is quite high for Warsun…

.

The similar sized Jaxman Z1 is $1.00 less with choice of tint, better UI and confirmed to have high quality lens.

But look at that huge zooming movement, they used a very shallow (long focal length) lens resulting in tons of light loss when zooming in (so a small hotspot). Not all is bad about that though, the flood will be very wide.

The 30mm zooming travel in particular was something I thought to be an advantage for wide flood, thanks for confirming that!

.

What do you mean by shallow lens? Are you referring to the depth it sits down in the bezel?

In the front view showing the emitter it looks like the lens is not there for that photo.
In this photo it looks normal depth (maybe?):

.
Can’t see much else about the lens in the listing, but I was informed it’s a plastic lens.

Front view: (looks like lens is removed):

There is this photo of the die image where appears to be fully zoomed in, (but probably pretty close to the wall):

Also the price went up today about $1, now $22.84

Interesting design on those Archon’s. Looks a twist zoom that can be operated with one hand.

Sorry about that I was wrong. I thought those flaps sticking out on each side under the head was for twist operation with your thumb, but now with closer inspection I see that isn’t the case. It’s just a normal twisty.

Ooh the model number is XR8. Not even listed on Sam’s website. It does list XR7
XR7 does not run on Li-ion battery, and XR8 still only 400Lm Flat Stare

While searching on line for those I did find something that was VERY exciting…for a minute (before I found out it’s discontinued Angry )

The Tasco XR9r

This apparently was a pretty awesome flashlight from about a year ago! With so many great features I have no idea why it was discontinued.

  • 800 Lumen!
  • Zooming focus
  • Lighted tail switch!
  • Magnetic Tail Cap!
  • Runs on 18650 Li-ion!
  • Built in USB charging
  • Hidden USB port under a knurled stainless ring!
  • USB Powerbank feature!
  • Stainless steel bezel ring
  • Round spot beam instead of square!

I guess these were selling for under $30 at Sams Club, but they were also on Amazon a while back (sold out now):
https://www.amazon.com/Tasco-XR9r-Rechargeable-LED-Flashlight/dp/B01JGN38BE/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Amazon reviews were all 5 star, one reviewer commented:

“This light isnt being made anymore. I called Tasco (Bushnell) to ask where I could get another and they said it was a one time deal with that Big Box store. No plans to make them again. I don’t understand that but that’s what they said.”

.

Bummer.

Here’s a youtube video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSusAIf1_1E

After an extensive online search I was only able to find it showing available at one store…..
But when I tried to buy it (just to check) it shows; “Our shopping cart is undergoing maintenance.” LOL
http://www.tacticalsuppliesexpress.com/item/13837047/

Price was a little high anyway: $59.97 Sams Club did show it on their auctions site from a while back, they were probably a great deal in the auction.

Now all the zoomies at Sams are all low output and run on Alka-leaks, nothing nearly as nice as the XR9r was.

Yes…$60 is a little high for this.

For $60 I want a great twist Zoom with 200 to 400 KCD for very long throw and decent flood.

Has BLF done anything like this ?

Or is there something already ,not too large like the Cometa should have been …

That does look nice .

Can BLF (OR has this been done)
or someone know a way we can get factory modded versions of something like it with a Turbo Mode …?

And choice of LED for either brightness or throw ?

I would pay $40 for this if it had a Turbo Mode that pushes the LED a bit .

Not a Tech or Modder but woukd be cool to have a light like this with 300KCD..

And some would prefer high lumens over high Candela ..

So a C Model ( optimised for High Candela – Throw )

And an L Model ( optimized for Lumens, Color ).

robertkoa, I have only seen this particular light from enogear and I’ve not seen them do any customs specials that I’m aware of. I’m still hoping someone has feedback for the Countryman, I’m going to bump it in my next post.

If Enogear did offer a modded version it probably would be more than $40 since that’s only $4 more than stock one costs.

Check out the Jaxman Z1 they offer different LED choices/tints etc. but they usually don’t drive them too hard. Skylumen offers a modded one but it’s VERY expensive: https://skylumen.com/collections/v54-lights/products/zi-seriesvn-need-spec

You could also start a topic or WTB thread and ask on the forum, there’s quite a few members here that offer services/modded lights.

Mtn electronics sells a modded zoomie but when you select it shows “out of stock” so I’m not sure how long for them to build one, you could email them about it. http://www.mtnelectronics.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=80&pr...

Ok so this is a looong thread so I am just going to ask….really good but budget zoomie that uses AAs?

Any suggestions?

Here’s a few:

These two for smaller single AA:

Although these can run on a regular AA, the’re brighter on a 14500 Li-ion

.

This one’s a larger size like the that “super junk military grade” but better quality, also runs on 3xAAA like the military grade one.

It can run on a 18560 Li-ion and would also be brighter (like the military grade one)

My dad bought that super junk “military grade” chinese junk light and loved the zoomie feature, but dropped it just once and its a pile of pieces. So I wanted to get him a better quality one. ANy help is appreciated.

Sounds like you don’t want him to deal with recharging batteries, but honestly regular batteries are more of a PIA, gotta keep buyin them, and they can leak and ruin the light, and in some models have a lower brightness output. You might want to look into one with Li-ion and USB charging. Of course the cost will be higher.

The ones with a magnetic docking base are the easiest to deal with, really convenient, just set it/keep it on the base, no removing batteries or plugging in wires, and never buy batteries again.

Here’s a few lower cost ones with charging dock:

An interesting zoomie with TIR optic I found today:

WARSUN A7

I wonder if it has the “Donut hole” effect in-between flood and throw positions, like the Fitorch/Litesam E11Z (post #171)
These is a beam shot at mid-zoom and it doesn’t look too bad. It’s only $15.35 on sale for 6 more days.

Xiaomi FZ101 looks like a pretty nice zoomie. Hopefully it is moddable.

From the picture, I wonder what is the thing underneath the aspheric lense? Is that a wavien collar? If so that would be awesome.
