Li-ion Battery Replacement for HID Spotlight?

Hi guys, The SLA battery in my HID spotlight just went dead after 4 years of service - which is quite impressive to me considering I never take care of the battery properly and charged it regularly.

While I can easily find a cheap and similar SLA battery for replacement, I am thinking if there is any good choice of lithium battery replacement for this matter? For example are those high-discharge R/C lithium battery packs good for this purpose (like one of those sold in hobbyking)?

By the way this is the SLA battery taken out from the HID spotlight.

Thanks in advance!

This?

Yes, I think that 4s battery would work. A 3s battery also would probably work depending on the specifics of your system. What wattage is your HID?

Keltex, yes it is. How did you make the link work?

EasyB, My system is 55W automotive HID. 3S probably won’t cut it since the input voltage isn’t that high?

Any other recommendation, like the Shorai battery?

I think I have a similar system. I made a 3s2p 18650 pack for it. I tested with my power supply and it works fine down to below the voltage of the discharged pack. (I don’t remember what the lowest working voltage was)

I’m sure a Shorai battery would work, but the hobbyking batteries are inexpensive and would work fine. I have experience with those multistar batteries and they are fine quality. The “multistar high capacity” are actually the higher energy density version of their batteries, and so they have a higher IR than their high discharge batteries. But the one you linked would handle 55W no problem.

Thanks for the valuable input. Guess I am going with the R/C battery pack choice.

Is there any beginner guide for these R/C battery pack? Like how the charger works, how to modify the wiring to connect to the HID system… etc.

There is probably some relevant “sticky” threads on rcgroups.com regarding charging multicell batteries and using balance chargers. It’s probably a good idea to get a basic hobby charger as well. Any of the inexpensive turnigy models would work fine, like the accucell 6.

As far as the wiring, I would recommend using a standard RC battery plug like XT60 so you can easily connect and disconnect the battery from your light and charger. Any question you have has probably been asked on rcgroups.
