Asking on behalf of a friend

Budget 2 x 18650 headlamp.
Around genuine 5-600 lumens (or more).
Robust construction & capable of coping with rain.

Hi!

Recommended this unit to a friend months ago, and he was pleased:

SingFire L-05 1*Cree XM-L2 T6 3-Mode 850LM Cool White LED Headlamp

I haven't seen the lamp myself, though.

Cheers ^:)

Budget?
A headband (man I linked several times to a sweet band capable of holding 3 flashlights 18650 size tube) less then $3
A floody S2+ 4*7138 NW with broad tir (~$16)
A Convoy C8 XPL HI with new firmware (~$21)
Man what a combination that is.

Since I received that hand band I never use a headlamp it is very nice to be able to flood AND throw.

Ah found the headband

I have the third (center) space used by a S2 UV365 Nichia
First has a eagle eye X6 XML2 NW
Second is empty.

Hi Barkuti, that SingFire looks very similar to the myriad of cheap Chinese headlamps claiming to have Cree XM-L leds & outputs anywhere up to 5,000 lumens, although it has a slightly more believable (if probably still exaggerated) claim of 850 lumens.
Pity you hadnā€t seen it to be able to verify if it does in fact have a Cree emitter & not an LB clone & what the general construction is like.

Hi The Miller, I have been approached by a number of people in a fishing club for suggestions for a reasonable ā€œbudgetā€ headlamp, cells & charger.
They want a headlamp as opposed to using a flashlight mounted on a head strap.
They have bought various cheap Chinese headlamps claiming massive outputs from supposed Cree emitters & long run times from supposed 5,000 mah ā€œfireā€ 18650 cells.
I have told them several times that the claims are untrue & the cells/chargers are potentially dangerous.
Finally I tested a ā€œ2,000 lumen Cree XM-L T6ā€ headlamp supplied with a charger & ā€œ2 x 5,000 mah XXXXXfire 18650ā€sā€ that a few of them are using a week ago.
I found the led to be an LB, output was around 360 lumen & the 5,000mah cells tested at under 1,000ma capacity, had high internal resistance of around 100 & discharged voltage very quickly at rest (obviously old re-wrapped laptop pulls).
I have convinced them to get 3,400 mah Panasonic NCR 18650 Bā€s & Liitokala Lii-202 chargers as a much better alternative to the ā€œfireā€ cells & no name chargers & am now trying to find a budget headlamp to complete the package for them.
They are not flash ā€œoā€ holics but just want a reasonably performing (5-600 lumens or there aboutā€s would be great) headlamp that will stand up to some rain & be robust enough to get a reasonable amount of use out of.
They also donā€t want to spend the sort of money that a Fenix, Princeton Tec or Nitecore headlamp would cost.
The Thorfire 2 x 18650 motion sensing headlamp is a possible choice (and a good price) but I am not sure it is either robust or waterproof enough to meet their needs.

The Thorfire is a nice lamp, but it definitely does not have any sort of liquid protection. In not 100% sure it could handle high humidity! I donā€™t know of any budget lights that fit the description. I think they would be much better off with say a skillhunt h02/3 or something like that.

What price range does ā€˜budgetā€™ encompass? Why in particular do they want 2x 18650 cells, is it mainly because thatā€™s the format they are familiar with? How much throw would they want? (zoomie-ewww, flooder, reflector?) I just received a skillhunt H02R and itā€™s awesome. On sale the NW was just under $27. Is that too much?

Still
It is about how useful it is as head light right?

The band I mentioned before with this makes an awesome headlight that survives a lot of abuse

With 4 chips long runtimes and a second with tir gives extra flood
Tint options

Saw the S2+ with rubber booth on gearbest for less then 10
But going for simon gives more choices.
So 3 (band) 15 (S2+) 4 (cell) 4 (charger) $26 for such a solid versatile set compared to headlight not easy to use for other things or costing more without cell and charger seems like a no brainer

Budget wise probably around $20-$25 for the headlamp max as the cells & charger will cost them the best part of $15.
They want 2 x 18650 for run times as they will be fishing maybe 6 hours & that will be a mix of hi & low power.
Also they are used to ā€œheadlampā€ looking lights & ā€œtubeā€ style lights like the Skilhunt will be a hard sell to them (I am not selling them but you know what I mean).
Failing that if there is a ā€œtraditionalā€ headlamp style light that meets the criteria & also has good on board charging so the separate charger could be dropped then I suppose they could be persuaded to go to around $30-$35 for the headlamp.
Maybe there is nothing out there for the budget that meets the requirements.
I know that with the likes of Fenix, Nitecore & Princeton Tec, which are probably the main ā€œnameā€ brand headlamps used for fishing here in the UK they would be looking at a minimum of $50 for the headlamp plus cells & charger (so $65) or the best part of $100 plus cells for a lamp with onboard charging.
Around $40 all in (headlamp, cells & charging) is what they are hoping for
They are paying around $20-$25 for the cheap Chinese headlamp, 2 x 18650 ā€œfireā€ cells & no name charger so $40 is quite a jump for them

I canā€™t comfortably recommend cheap chinese lights that use 2 series lithium ion cells. Here is the crelant CH10 for $21. maybe you can get a discount through M4DM4X (let me know :D)
http://www.gearbest.com/headlights/pp_261516.html

The cells are not in series they are in parallel & by using genuine cells such as protected Panasonic 18650 NCR-Bā€s & a reasonable charger like the Lii-202 should be safe enough.
I take it that that Crelant is a single 18650 ?
Any idea what the run time is like ?

Why donā€™t they continue buying the cheap Chinese headlamps? They probably buy cheap over and over where they already spent over $100.00 when they should have bought a good headlamp the first time.

The one I posted above is sure to work well; just add $4 for an emitter replacement in case you don't like cough white.

Cheers ^:)

110% as a keen fisherman my self i always carry my Nitecore HC30 on my head and also maybe a thrower depending on where i am fishing.

I would tell your mates maybe donā€™t leave the light on while fishing it can scare away fish.

A beacon mode may come in handy like the HC30 has if they need to be seen. One place where i land fish i go waste high in water and boat pass by fairly close so the beacon helps.

They are casting well over 100 yards into very murkey water, there is little chance of headlamps scaring the fish
An HC30 bought in the UK is about $65 ($50 if bought from China) plus 2 cells & a charger so around $65-$80 depending on where they purchase from.
Based on the fact that you can get a reasonably good budget flashlight for $20-$30 I assumed that you would be able to get a reasonable budget headlamp for around the same price or not much more.
I personally have several Fenix headlamps & an Olight H55 wave (along with around 8 cheap Chinese lamps) but these people wonā€t spend the money a ā€œbrandā€ name will cost.
I was hoping to point them in the direction of a reasonable budget set up (& get them away from ā€œfireā€ cells & no name chargers) for around $40, maybe that is not possible with headlamps.

This should run on a 2 X 18650 set-up; though it comes stock with 4 X 18650 batteries.
More than 600 lumens. Check out the test I did for ā€œmoistureā€:

This is actually pretty coolā€¦ I like the idea, and wouldnā€™t mind trying it myself. Of course, this leads to the idea of 3x XP-L HI triples, for about 9k lumens strapped to your headā€¦ For some reason, this is how I see THAT scenario working outā€¦

They canā€™t spare half a minute during this six hours to swap a cell?

I think it should be possible to bore out HC30 to mod it into XP triple.
