Olight S1R Review- Otter Style

Hey guys and gals, here’s a quick and dirty “Otter Style” review of the Olight S1R Baton.

Thanks to Olight for this one. Check out the site- S1R Baton II EDC Pocket Flashlight - Olight Store

First off, let’s start with Otter’s Four Paws of Applause.

Lockout- Unlike my S2, this light has an easy to apply lockout mode that prevents accidental activation. Hold the button down for a few seconds, moonlight will come on for a moment, then turn off. After this, pressing the mode button will result in it glowing red. Awesome feature!

Magnetic Tail Cap and Charging. Love this charging system, it’s fast and easy plus easily accessible. When I’m sitting in front of my laptop doing schoolwork, I can have the light charging next to me. The “no-fumble” quality of charging is top notch. There is no having to take the battery out and then put it in a charger, then back in the light. It’s all done in one magnetic click. If you need the light quickly, all you have to do is remove it from the charger. When the light is fully charged, the LED in the base of the charger goes from red to green. Being able to stick the magnetic tail cap to any ferrous surface also comes in handy a lot.

Bezel- The bezel on the S1R fully protects the head of the light. It has a nice lip that protects the front edge of the light, which I really appreciate. It keeps everything tougher and more resistant to drops.

Turbo and Turbo S mode. The Turbo, (600 and 900 lumens) modes are almost hidden, making it easier to conserve battery. When the light is on, holding down the mode switch cycles through low, med, and high. Double clicking when in this mode gives you Turbo, double clicking again gives Turbo S. I’m more apt to use the higher modes in unnecessary situations when they are part of the main mode selection. This makes battery life last so much longer!

The Olight S1R hasn’t left my pocket since the day I got it, kicking my S2 to bag duty. It’s so small and disappears in my pocket. I don’t clip it to my pocket for this reason. The clip does get used often though, as I live in ballcaps and clip the S1R to the bill when needed. That’s another benefit of the S1R’s small size, it clips to the bill of a ballcap very unobtrusively. You barely notice it, yet it’s very bright. I find myself using moonlight and high the most. Moonlight is perfect for night reading or night ninja prowling.

I’ve discovered a great use for the timer feature. Having 4 younger siblings under the age of 10, (I’m oldest of 6 kids) I’m in charge of bedtime quite often. Turning all the lights off at night and turning the S1R on with the timer features makes bedtime a fun challenge. I tell them that they have to get their Pj’s on, teeth brushed, and bedtime story picked out before the light turns off. If they succeed, they get an extra chapter read to them. Works every time!

I’ve charged the S1R about 3 times in the week I’ve had it. It’s come in handy a lot, if I’m biking home after dark with a backpack full of groceries or checking on sleeping kids during the night. I’ve used the magnetic tailcap to pick up a container of thumb tacks I spilled. My favorite use of all involves the bathroom. I was leading a church retreat last weekend and took a quick bathroom break. Well, some middle schoolers thought it would be a great prank to turn the light off while I was taking a leak. They flip the lights off and start giggling. Mid stream, I reach down, grab my S1R, double click to turbo, and magnetically stick it to the top of the urinal. The looks on their faces were priceless.

I can only find a few small negative points with the light. There is a possibility of tailcap shortage and the collection of debris in the tailcap. Occasionally, I have to clean the tailcap to get rid of small ferrous particles that have collected there. I also have experienced the light shorting out and not working, requiring me to remove the battery to “reset” the light. Also, the lanyard hole is very small and hard to get to, making it very difficult to use any other lanyard other than the stock one that comes with the light. I’d love a larger lanyard hole like the one used on the S2 Baton. Don’t get me wrong, the stock lanyard is great, but I prefer to knot my own custom one.

Overall, the S1R has become my new EDC light. If I’m going to be out late, I’ll add my S2 to my loadout. I added a small #95 paracord lanyard to the light, securing it around the heatsink grooves in the head. It works great for clipping, hanging, or looping the light to different objects in different scenarios. The blue hardware is very attractive, blending in with my other blue bits of gear. The beam has no real hotspot. It’s a very floody beam, thanks to the Olight TIR optic. Anodizing is great and the square threads are spot on. Quality is top notch, giving Olight a leg up over other lights in this price range. The size/output ratio of the S1R is amazing.

I give the Olight S1R 5 out of 5 Oysters!!
